Gear up for the 2014 Kenya Social Media Awards

OLX Kenya, the leading online free classified service, is the title sponsors of this year’s Kenya Social Media Awards (SOMA) following the success of the inaugural edition last year.

SOMA Awards, , creates a platform for individuals and organizations to celebrate the contribution of social media in the social, economic and political spheres by recognizing those who have used it positively to impact lives.

This year’s Awards themed “Making Social Media Work for You” will bring together different players in the market including corporate organizations, personalities, SMEs, students, county governments, and national government agencies.

OLX Kenya CEO, Mr Peter Ndiangu’i said the initiative is in line with the company’s strategy to promote the growth of businesses and communication through social media. “The Awards, which are Online driven, offers a better platform to enhance product and consumer engagement through creativity and innovation,” he said.

The Director of OLX Social Media Awards, Mr. Martin Muli, said the Awards will be used to highlight the influence of social media on brand building and encourage companies to intensify online presence. Mr. Muli said new categories will be introduced this year to make the Awards more exciting and inclusive. “After the success of the inaugural Awards, we are reviewing the categories to ensure all those who have immensely contributed to the growth of social media are appreciated,” said Mr. Muli.

Last year, the OLX Social Media Awards had 25 categories including Social Media News Channel of the Year, Social Media Personality of the Year, Social Media Corporate Award of the Year and Social Media Innovation of the Year.

The Best There is in Rap Music from Coast!

Time to turn it up! The mission is quite clear for the Kenyan born and bred rapper and music producer going all the way to turn up the music scene a notch higher.

With his new single release Turn it up! already rocking the clubs, rapper Wilmot, commonly known as W.I is on a straight come back mission to the local and international music scene having released debut singles preceding his debut album scheduled for release later this year.

The fusion of Swahili, Taita, English and French on a single tune worked marvel on this track produced by Atomic Beats of Shadowville records. The bass-line gets you jammin’ right from the word go and is definitely a feel good party anthem to rock to any day.

The approach on the production is particularly different taking a direct swerve from the usual fast paced tempo on most trap tracks. The influence of J.C’s ingenuity can however be felt and a slight touch of taita and swahili from Wilmot gives the listener definitely something extra touching.

Emmy Award Winner And Radio Presenter Talia Oyando Finds Her Twin (Photo)

It is said that out of the 7.2 billion people present on earth, at least one of them is your look-alike; your double.

Talia Oyando, Homeboyz presenter and mother of one does not have to scour through billions of pictures to find her look-alike as her look alike happens to be a good friend of hers. Talia shared this photo of herself and her Pulse magazine pal Sylvia Njoki and the two look strikingly similar.

Attention Artists! J.Blessing has Some Free Lessons for Your Music Career

Ray talk is a forum organized and managed by Ray Media for music artists and is the first of it’s kind within Kenya. Most people focus on managing Artistes rather than also equipping them and informing them on how to tackle common issues amongst themselves.

Ray talk offers a platform of change within the music industry in Kenya to ensure a promising future for the aspiring, established and upcoming Artistes.

We have new Artists from different genres rising up, others crumbling down, while some are already established. With this in mind, it is right to say we need to train and nurture our Artists with the right skills and information to be effective and equipped.

Ray Talk Objectives.

  • Equip Artistes with the necessary information.

Willy Paul is Heading Back to the US

This year, Gospel singer Willy Paul has really outdone himself. From rebranding (Willy Paul to Willy Paul Msafi) after a streak of bad luck – controversy after controversy – to releasing two hot jams in a one month space.

Clearly this young singer hasn’t been sitting pretty. And now with his latest release with Size 8 Reborn, Tam Tam, gone viral on YouTube (over 21,000 views in just 3 days) Willy Paul is set to leave the country yet again.

Speaking to Ghafla! on phone, the Gospel singer reveals that he departs for the US on Monday where he will stay for 3 weeks.

The visit will see him perform at an already organized Church concert as well as attend the renowned US-based Talanta Awards in which he has been nominated for an award in the Best Performing Artist and Best Stage Presence categories.

In March, Willy Paul was in the States for a 12-State tour for close to two months where he also boasts of a broader audience.

Before The Fame: Legendary Kenyan Dancer Boneless (Photo)

Boneless is one of the few artistes around who can say that they have achieved success in both dance and music.

In addition to dancing, he made a stab at music a while back that saw him nominated for a Kisima Award in the Urban Music category.

Apart from music and dancing, Boneless has also tried his hand at modeling. A Ghafla reader

Naijeria Toweett sent us this photo of Boneless during his modeling days on one of those 5 bob success cards.

Mwalimu King’ang’i A.K.A Churchill Allegedly Slaps A Waiter In An Eldoret Pub And Restaurant

Churchill Ndambuki has done what most men can only dreamed of. He has built an empire out of jokes and comedy and this has seen him laugh all the way to the bank (complete with seizures) while the rest of us doing “serious” business can only giggle to the bank. But that said and done, this is all about a story I have read on Standard Digital alleging that Churchill slapped a waiter over an argument over a bill dispute.

This is what Standard Digital reported:

Blah blah blah! Nonsense nonsense, nonsense (I am only quoting verbatim here) During a recent tour of Eldoret, it is rumoured that comedy pioneer and mentor Churchill may have been involved in an altercation with a waiter. Sources narrated to the Pulse desk how a sloshed Churchill disagreed with and slapped a waiter at the Club 411 in Eldoret, before quietly doing some ‘damage-control’ by paying the waiter Sh10, 000.

But they reached out to Churchill’s publicist and co-director Ken Waudo who had this to say on the matter,

If Churchill slapped anyone, it was only with words,” Waudo explained away the 3am incident.

Corazon Kwamboka’s New Weave.Ratchet Or Not? (Photos)

Weaves. Love them or hate them, they are here to stay.

There are goo weaves such as Vera Sidika’s weave which she paid a pretty penny for ,then there are those weaves that make you wonder if the person carrying an ugly  nest on their head fell and bumped their head before getting the weave.

Anyhow I came across a photo of Corazon Kwamboka’s new weave.

In April this year, a few months after the culmination of Tusker Project Fame, season 6, we revealed to you that one of the most vocally talented female contestants, Nyambura, became a proud mum to a bouncing baby boy.

The talented singer shared the exciting news, sparking a handful of Internet fans to throw a few congratulatory comments her way while others didn’t believe she’s a mum.

And now, 3 months after her baby’s birth, mother and baby are doing excellently well. We managed to get an exclusive photo of Nyambura’s baby boy, Haniel. Check him out;

Here’s a Very Rare Photo of Citizen TV’s Power Couple Willis Raburu & Sally Mbilu

We see them on TV, we love them but they found a greater love in each other. Despite their busy schedule to bring you the latest news from around the country and beyond, they still find time for each other.

For Willis Raburu and Sally Mbilu, theirs is another love story made on TV just like for James Smart and Remmy Majala. One thing about this cute and lovey-dovey celebrity couple, their moments caught on camera are usually private.

Enough of that. It’s time to take a look at (and give mad props) to Willis and Sally who’ve successfully found love and held on to it.

Here’s a very rare photo of the TV couple;

Here’s the Guy Who Gave “The Midas Effect” to Juliani’s Music

One thing that has always stood out about Juliani is his forthright punch-lines in each and every song that he churns out. His signature rap style is one that has become synonymous with Kenyans, age not-withstanding.

And now with his new album, Exponential Potential, out and retailing affordably, it has been flying off the shelf like hot bread countrywide.

One of the guys credited for one of Juliani’s hot jams is singer and producer, Majic Mike.

Majic Mike is fast becoming one of the most sought after music producers. His track record, so far, is very impressive and is getting better with every release. His latest hits are Zongelela by SOC and Nishike by Kaz.

Hilarious Comedy “Trapped” Extended due to Public Demand

Trapped is a hilarious audience-pleasing fast-paced comedy. Its physical over-the-top makes our last show Dangerous Affairs seem like a prayer meeting by comparison.

The comedy is starring Kenya’s superstars directed by Derrick Amunga and Mbeki Mwalimu. The setting of Trapped is a medical hospital. A doctor (Nick Ndeda) is practicing the lecture he will deliver to an assembly of fellow gynecologists

in less than an hour. The speech’s success is vital to his career.

Interruptions abound. First it’s various other medical staff rehearsing for a performance (i.e. the cheeky Nigerian doctor played by Maina Olwenya; tough talking matron played by Veronica Waceke; a pregnant intern doctor played by Lulu Wilson and the new doctor played by Henry Gitau Ngogoyo). Then a long-ago ex (Wangari Gioche), who was once a nurse at the hospital, brings the news that she gave birth 16 years earlier to the doctor’s daughter (Janet Kirina) and the daughter is in the hospital in search of Dad! Yes, there is his harsh wife (Rosemary Waweru), and she knows nothing of the past liaison!

And in the spiraling chaos of deceit, false identity and manic cover-up that ensues, the mission is to avoid the daughter, pacify the ex, keep the chief specialist and hospital deputy director (Derrick Amunga) at bay and fend off various distractions, among them a patient from deep in the village excited by the goings-on (Johnson Chege) and an inquisitive police officer.

Kenyan Writer Bags Prestigious Caine Prize

As I was trawling the internets for information, I came across an article in the guardian that I want to share with you. It’s about a Kenyan who has made Kenya proud after bagging for herself the prestigious Caine Prize:

Kenyan author Okwiri Oduor has won the 2014 Caine Prize for African Writing for her short story My Father’s Head.

Described as “an uplifting story about mourning,” Nairobi-born Oduor’s 2013 work begins with the narrator’s attempts to remember what her father’s face looked like as she struggles to cope with his loss, and follows her as she finds the courage to remember.

“Okwiri Oduor is a writer we are all really excited to have discovered,” said Scottish author and chief judge Jackie Kay, as the prize was presented at the Bodleian Library in Oxford tonight. “My Father’s Head’ is an uplifting story about mourning – Joycean in its reach. She exercises an extraordinary amount of control and yet the story is subtle, tender and moving. It is a story you want to return to the minute you finish it.”

Now in its fifteenth year, the annual £10,000 award celebrates short stories written by African authors published in English.

Oduor, who is now working on her first novel, had been shortlisted with South Africa’s Diane Awerbuck for her short story Phosphorescence, Efemia Chela from both Ghana and Zambia for Chicken, Zimbabwe’s Tendai Huchu for The Intervention, and Kenya’s Billy Kahora for The Gorilla’s Apprentice. Each will take home £500 prize money.

Oduor will be able to take up a month’s residence at Georgetown University in Washington DC, and will be invited to appear at the Open Book Festival in Cape Town in September, the Storymoja Hay Festival in Nairobi and the Ake Festival in Nigeria.

The Caine Prize is named after the late Sir Michael Caine, former chairman of the Booker Prize management committee.

Real Or Fakes? DJ Sadic’s Red October Yeezys! (PHOTO)

DJ Sadic is one of the hottest gospel DJs in the game and he has done it for a while now to the extent that his name is synonymous with the hottest gospel mixes and shows. He was the one time partner of DJ Mo, who happens to be married to Size 8. But away from that, he now has Tendereza on KTN which he partners with DJ Krowbar on.

But this is not about his bio profile. It’s about his shoes. And whether or not they are real. I swear the rate at which Kenyan celebrities are becoming sneaker heads is too damn high! And some of them are guilty of posting knock-offs. Anyway, allow me to give you my submission for your scrutiny:

Larry Madowo Forcefully Washed In Public (PHOTO)

And this coming hot on the heels of a story I saw on news the other day that had me wondering whether it was a slow day for news at NTV!

Anyway, for the background story, Larry Madowo was celebrating his 60th [citation needed] birthday at Pawa Hub yesterday and as he and his friends were cutting the cake, some members of the crowd/mob/party decided to show him how much he means to them by sharing in the healthy time honoured tradition of bathing.

And while most people tend to bathe alone and in private, Larry Madowo’s friends opted to take part in this very important sanitation ritual in public… Even if they would get caught up as collateral damage.

Of all the things I’m grateful for, none ranks higher than the blessing of great family, friends and colleagues. Even though they’ve drenched me in water (and juice, and tea) twice http://youtu.be/gi_1UzpWsWY, they’ve made this celebration all the more memorable. Anyway, away from matters childhood, allow me to delve into the ten hottest stories making headway in Kenya’s entertainment scene on this, the Ides of July:

Kenya Kona’s Thunderous Comeback!

#KenyaKona has rolled out a stand up knock-out comedy show at The Choices Lounge in Baricho Road. Featuring The Bad’d Boys of Kenya Kona, the weekly show happens every Monday Night from 7pm to 10pm, charges are only 500 Bob and inclusive of a drink voucher valued at 200 Bob.

“It is a platform to unwind from the Monday Blues”, read a statement from the Kenya Kona Executive Chair  Cedric Kuloba, “Kenyans deserve more light moments to push them through the week, and laughter does this stupendously”.

The show has already unveiled two ‘comedians of the week’ in the shape Mc Bones and Moch Mpienga who wowed the crowd in the past two events held at Choices. The show structure is a two round battle of stand up comics that are judged by the audience.

Cedric reveals that this Monday shall have 6 competitors:

  • Mathayo Theophilus (self proclaimed president of ‘The Short People United’)
  • Oyoo (Former winner of Top comic)
  • Little known but funny Johnnie Boy
  • Judiff
  • Julius Massai
  • Mannasseh.

“This show is a no-holds-barred competition, it is geared to give a chance to budding comedians on a real platform, a baptism of fire!

The selected hosts of the show are John Kibet, Okal, Othuol Othuol , Kasuku & Okal who have great experience of pumping up dynamic audiences.”
