In Kenya, wood is the most popular material in home, workstation and entertainment décor, but one entrepreneur profiled on CNN International’s ‘African Start-Up’ this week has cut an edge with a highly differentiated and ingenious product- bicycle furniture.  

Nairobi-based Ojey’s Designs Limited takes functionality of bicycles a step further, making furniture out of the parts. After quitting his three year accountant job in 2012, Martin Ojwang, the proprietor of Ojey’s Designs Limited, discovered a source of income from bicycles that does not involve transportation. Ojey’s Designs Limited uses bicycle parts from rims and tires, to spokes and pedals. These are welded together to form the base of his furniture.

Although Ojey’s Designs Limited makes the furniture on an order basis and markets the products online, Martin Ojwang’s startup is grappling with challenges such as penetrating the market, pricing and getting the raw materials.

Well it has been an intense two days of cat fight between Socialites Vera Sidika and Huddah Monroe and as the saying goes whatever has a beginning has definitely an ending so has this fight too come to an end.

Though Vera has not been beaten with a knockout, she has finally raised the white flag. Through her Instagram post she reveals that to get her blessing she must forgive her wrong doers and she also urges Huddah to seek her forgiveness but till now Huddah does not seem to have none of it. Typical of any war, the sides that gets the most blows and suffers the most in terms of casualties is usually the first to seek a ceasefire or surrender and Vera has just did exactly this.

Its has been a long two days

Looking at her, she wears the warmest smile and is always jovial. But for KTN’s Betty Kyallo, she decided to change her scars into floral gardens.

9 years ago, Betty almost lost her life when she was run over by a matatu and left for dead but God let her live to tell the tale.

Here’s her account of that nightmare;

“On the 6th of August 2005, ( a day like today) I nearly lost my life after being hit by a matatu in the CBD. I sustained serious injuries having broken my jaw, collar bone, 4 ribs, punctured my lungs, broke my left leg and worst of all scarred my face and neck.

That matatu was clearly meant to kill me. I stayed in hospital for 2 months and underwent 8 corrective surgeries. I learnt how to walk again like a child and had to deal with the scars which was the hardest thing as a teenage girl.

My dreams were crushed, lost my self esteem, pitied myself and cried every night. However because of God’s grace, love and mercy I pulled through. I am still here and I’m grateful for life. For my mom who went through it all with me, felt my pain, even offered to give me part of her skin to correct my face through grafting.

Spending hours by my side holding my hand and encouraging me to soldier on. Being strong when i clearly saw the pain and distress she was going through. Mum I love you tonnes for getting me through it. My great friend and brother Brian, my sweet sister Mercy who were there for me charming me with jokes although my jaw wouldn’t let me smile or laugh. My friends who visited me everyday of my hospitalization.

Doctors who literally worked on me. Kenyatta National hospital Private wing nurses, who were caring and never got tired of my calls for assistance. I say a big warm thank you to you all, I’m still on my journey because of something you did.

I now continue pursuing and living my dream after it was once crushed. I couldn’t have imagined I would live to see my daughter. I am more than happy, more than blessed. I’m still here. Life is precious.”

 

Ciku Muiruri has without a doubt one of the most famous faces and voices in Kenya’s media.

She is known for her Busted segment which was used to catch unfaithful lovers pants down. She also has a Friday column on The Nation newspaper called Ciku’s Beefs.

Her Daughter Erica looks like she has inherited not only her mother’s looks but also her mother’s diligence. She is about sixteen year old but is already   the official face and ambassador of the Lengai Foundation that seeks to improve the lives of Kenyans. She raised money to buy mobile blood units that cost about 50,000 dollars. The mobile blood units aim at making blood donations easier as they will be placed at strategic places in the CBD where willing donors can just donate hustle free.

The international community aren’t doing enough to help Kenya in her fight against terrorism.

Those are the sentiments shared by President Uhuru Kenyatta when he was interviewed by Richard Quest on CNN’s top billed program “Quest Means Business”.

Whenever  I watch TV, I do not waste my time watching news. Following the sudden demise of the lead character on Citizen TV’s Jastorina Show, the entire cast has also been unexpectedly terminated.

The talented comedian Nancy Nyambura alias Jatorina succumbed to meningitis, a bacterial infection of the brain and it seems the producers could not find the perfect replacement for her lead role on the show. She played as a hilarious house help who was being mistreated by her employer but still had the guts to flaunt about her charisma to her boss.

The show received a big following with the Kenyan audience a fact that made many advertisers slot in numerous advertisements during its time on air. Despite this fact, the show has been ended and the last episode of it was aired on 2nd Saturday last week. We will all miss the show.

 

 

We all have one of those relatives, those who cause unnecessary drama during burials. And as sure as the sun rises, these people will attend EVERY funeral and cause drama that will cause a lot of side-eyes and angry muttering.

And that is what Jastorina’s family experienced when her step-sister attended the funeral and demanded the money that Jaguar had given to Jastorina’s kids. I found this behavior rather appalling not forgetting seriously disrespectful to not only the ones getting buried but also the family. Njoki Chege rose from oblivion to super stardom with a very controversial article on why Kenyan women cheat that had very many women hot under their collars, baying for her blood and reaching for her wig.

A sombre mood engulfed Kagongo Village, Njumbi Location in Murang’a County Tuesday afternoon when TV actress Nancy Nyambura Kanyanya, popularly known by the stage name Jastorina and her mother, were laid to rest.

Thespians in their numbers accompanied Jastorina’s body and that of her mum from Kenyatta University Funeral Home in the morning to their final resting place in Murang’a.

Young Rich the K24 TV Show about young, rich and successful Kenyans who are making an impact in their respective fields featured Joe last night, he talked about how he made his million with his businesses. Kariuki owns a whopping 150 million real estate in UK, 50 million water packaging company in Naivasha and the successful Candy n Candy Records.

He once lost 40 million in a business deal but he rose to be successful again. His record Candy n Candy has signed up artistes in Both Kenya and Tanzania some including Hussein Machozi and Mr. Nice. The record is also involved in films and movie production. Apart from the label, Kariuki also own numerous night clubs across the country. His advice to Kenyans is to always go for it.

Well Tuesday the 5^th of August saw one of the fiercest catfights between socialites Huddah Moroe and Vera Sidika, it seems like there was a cease fire for a while but the war is still progressing on.

After Vera said she would be flying to Nigeria, Huddah expressed her dwindling love to Vera by warning her of the deadly Ebola virus that is racking havoc in the West African states. Maybe Huddah does not want Vera to go down without a proper fight. It is like there is no backing down in this catfight, both Vera and Huddah are not ready to stand down, buckle up guys guess we will be witnessing another long war, it is going to be a bumpy ride.

A short week ago, the Kenyan entertainment scene was rocked b y some tragic news.Nancy Nyambura, a top actress who played the role of a domestic servant called Jastorina in the hit Citizen TV’s ‘Super Sato’ program “Jastorina” show had passed onto glory. The acting fraternity was devastated as the lass had just won and award at the just concluded Kalasha Awards.

 

As if the news wasn’t bad enough, Jastorina’s mother passed on to glory in rapid succession. Can a family bear anymore of the tragedy? This was a truly saddening turn of events in what would have been a promising career. But heaven only knows.
The star was to be laid to rest yesterday at Murang’a County, Njumbi Division Kagongo Village, the final resting place of Jastorina and her mum.

Sadly what was expected to be a heartfelt, somber ceremony was disrupted by none other than Jastorina’s step sister who caused chaos.
Sources at the funeral revealed to Uncle Chim Tuna that Jastorina’s step sister caused chaos demanding the money Jaguar and Nairobi Senator Gideon “Sonko” Mbuvi had pledged to donate towards Jastorina’s son’s education.

Aye, the money was meant to help Jastorina’s son move on with life but Jastorina’s sister demanded “her share”. Keep it Ghafla for more as the situation unfolds.

The news of the death of veteran actor Derrick Amunga came as a blow to many of his Family, friends and fans after he had been reported missing for slightly over a week.

In a meeting held at Kenya National Theatre on 3^rd August 2014, the day the news broke out that Derrick has finally been found lifeless at Kenyatta National Hospital; more insight was given into the mystery of his passing.

Shem Odhiambo Agunga, a close friend narrated the story of how Derrick left home on Friday of 25^th July afternoon to go run some errands. He returned home in the evening and left again to go out as what many of us do on a weekend. Little did they know that was the last time they would be setting eyes on Amunga. Concern was raised 4 days later when Derrick did not return home and none of his friends or close colleagues and confidants had seen or heard of him from that Friday.

A police report claims that a Good Samaritan called the police on 26th July in the am after he was found bleeding and injured in a ditch a few meters from home.  He did not have any identification on him or his phone. He was rushed to Kenyatta National hospital Intensive Care Unit where he later passed away on the 28^th of July due to severe injuries.  It is not concluded how he succumbed the injuries and a postmortem is yet to be carried out.

His father described him as a man of the people while fellow actor Veronica Waceke remembers having a brother, mentor and friend who was ready to provide a helping hand to anyone in need.

An artist’s committee lead by Festival of Creative Arts (FCA Kenya) director Eliud Abuto has been formed to organize and plan for a befitting burial which will take place on the 16^th of August 2014 at his rural home in Kakamega.

There will be a fundraising on Wednesday 6^th of August 2014 at Kenya National Theatre at 6pm and another one on Sunday the 10^th of August from 2pm and you are hereby all invited and welcome to come assist a son, a brother, a friend get a comfortable resting place.

From playing the role of master Sugu in the TV drama Tausi to many other numerous characters on stage with the FCA family, Derrick Amunga will surely be remembered as one of the greatest thespians modern day theatre has witnessed.
