Who Is Allan Wadi? What Is He Made Of? This Is The Story Of The Moi University Student Sent To Jail For Insulting President Uhuru (A Personal Experience)

When I first met Allan Wadi Okeng’o in 2010 in MOI University, little did I know that five years later I will be seated somewhere along MOI Avenue writing about this Political Science student. Back then we were freshers in campus, trying to acclimatize with the new environment that our hard work and exertion had plunged us into.

My very first meeting with Wadi was on a football pitch, where first year students who resided at the periphery of the Moi University vast compound refreshed their muscles and bodies after strenuous orientation processes.

Wadi is a big football fanatic. He also plays football. Aggressively. I heard he also tried rugby but could not run fast enough. He quit.

Yesterday as I walked downtown Nairobi, I overheard people say that after the University of Nairobi, Moi University is another breeding ground for radicals. Nay, that is a lie. I felt like chipping in and shutting up the chap saying this.

He particularly mentioned the likes of Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and blogger Dikembe Disembe (he, however, does not want us to call him a blogger. He believes blogging is different from posting on facebook and twitter and other social media platforms. So kindly ignore the ‘blogger’ part). Hassan Omar because he was suspended for a record four years by the Moi University administration, only to be re-admitted by President Mwai Kibaki when he took over from the oppressive Moi regime. Dikembe Disembe because he has himself been arraigned in court before for ‘hate speech’. He is also a big critic of the Jubilee government.

Moi-University

Moi University where some think radicals are bred

How that makes the two radicals I don’t know. Those are the sentiments I heard along Tom Mboya Street.

Back to Wadi’s story. On the pitch, I tackled him and took away the ball from him. He turned against me and wanted to blow me up. I survived, thanks to the rest of the freshers who warned him and threatened to eject him from the playground if he did not understand the basic football rules.

This is where I started knowing exactly who Wadi is. After that brief altercation, he walked straight to me and apologized. Those words still stick in my mind: ‘Hey man I am sorry, I was a bit temperamental. Easy man’. And that is how we became good friends until I left campus. I left him behind.

He studied Political Science. I studied Media and Communication. We could meet in what is commonly known as Common Courses in Moi University. Wadi attended class at will. But what stunned us most were his antics during exams.

A normal university exam takes 3 hours. Those are hours set for students to be able to answer all questions as much as they can, and revise their answers if necessary. To Wadi, however, the university was wrong. Such exams required a maximum of 45 minutes. He was the first student to hand in his booklet after only 45 minutes in the exam room.

What could follow was laughter and murmurs in the hall, with everybody surprised whether Wadi had answered all the questions or he just could not understand anything in the paper. Our lecturers, to date, have answers to this question.

Wadi was aggressive and could do anything to get what he wanted. Dikembe Disembe knows this. At some point, Moi University students had issues with HELB. The body had refused to disburse funds into their accounts. They were feeding on dust, literally, and the administration seemed to do little to freshen up the situation. Wadi offered to travel all the way from Eldoret to Anniversary Towers to air their grievances.

He wrote a proposal and presented it to the dean of students, Dr. Mureithi. It is also important to note that Wadi was a close confidant to the Dean of Students. They had developed a very strong rapport that made many students believe that he was collaborating with the dean to suppress efforts made by other students to reach him.

It was rumored that after that proposal, the dean siphoned close to 100k into Wadi’s account to travel to Nairobi. Whether that’s true or not, Wadi and Mureithi know well. Consequently, HELB behaved finally and this gave Wadi ground to brag and feel high. Whether he indeed helped to force HELB to behave or not is also not known to date as other groups, especially the student leaders, among them Dikembe Disembe, also claimed to have tirelessly made trips to Nairobi to champion for the release of the funds.

There was also a time when students, especially athletes from Moi University were baying for Wadi’s blood. This was after he disappeared into thin air with close to 100k meant for a football tournament organized by the Moi University Vice Chancellor. It is famously known as the VC Cup. After the tournament, Wadi disappeared with the cash and the irate participants swore to teach him a bitter lesson when he re-appeared.

It took time and Wadi appeared when students were sitting for their end of semester exams. He survived on the notion that everybody was busy. Students fear exams more than unexpected pregnancies, forced cuts or Ebola. Nobody had time to question Wadi.

wadi

Allan Wadi when he was arraigned in court for hate speech

Regardless of all these, Allan Wadi was not a bad guy to many. On his social media accounts, this wasn’t the first time he sounded controversial. He has always spoken his mind, whether he intends to please you or not.

He criticized the administration at will and when he felt something was going astray. He did so bitterly and with much venom like a rattled python. This perhaps explains why he carried his wrath to the presidency, which turned out to be a wrong move to a wrong entity.

After four years in college, and as we braced ourselves for graduation, Wadi could be seen with books to the giant Margaret Thatcher Library, trying to accomplish what had landed him in Moi.

It is not that his Political Science degree required more years like Medicine and/or Engineering. Wadi had been left behind and was forced to finish school late. I guess, a year after we graduated, Wadi is still schooling. That is why he is again and again referred to as a student.

His conviction will for sure derail and consequently delay his graduation from Moi University even more. To those who knew him, it is reasonable why pleas to release him make a lot of sense. To those hearing him for the first time, his rants on President Kenyatta are enough to put him behind bars.

Dennis Itumbi Defends The Jailing Of Moi University Student Allan Wadi After Public Outcry

Allan Wadi Okeng’o, a Moi University Political Science student was sentenced to two years in jail late last week after what was said to be insults and disobedience to the presidency.

Calls have been made to President Uhuru Kenyatta to pardon Wadi after he (Wadi) told the court that he was mentally unstable at the time he posted insulting messages on his social media accounts.

However, a section of Kenyans feel that the whole process of putting Wadi on trial was skewed, with the accused denied the right to be represented in court.

This has prompted Dennis Itumbi, who is the director of digital communication in the office of the president, to respond to the claims that Wadi was jailed for insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Itumbi has denied these claims and instead made it clear that Wadi was jailed for insulting the Presidency and spreading hate speech on his social media accounts.

Lieutenant Wadi is still in jail.

wadi

Allan Wadi in court

This is what Itumbi said about Wadi:

“Fact: No one is in Jail for insulting The President…..Media Houses are actually spreading a Lie.

Wadi was charged for:

1. Hate Speech

2. Undermining Authority of a Public officer (Penal Code)

The President is on record saying he does not take personal insults to him.

However, The presidency is a creation of the law and there are laws that govern it.

Can he forgive Wadi? That power was shifted by the 2010 constitution and subsequent Power of Mercy legislation

Hate Speech, proven through the established process of law, should and must be punished. I have always held and I maintain we are responsible for what we say and should be able to defend it.”

Jaguar Accorded Police Escort In Mombasa

Just like Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz, Jaguar becomes the first Kenyan musician to be accorded a full police escort as he touched down in the coastal city of Mombasa.

If there’s any Kenyan outside the confines of politics that has achieved the real celebrity status is Charles Njagua, better known to you as, Jaguar.

Recently during a visit to the Coastal city of Mombasa, the singer was accorded full VIP treatment complete with police escort as soon as he touched down at the Moi International Airport.

When Ghafla! reached out to Jaguar for a comment, his phone went unanswered.

However, a close and reliable source to the philanthropic singer intimated that the singer was indeed accorded the police escort.

Boniface Mwangi Seeks Uhuru’s Help Over Death Threats

Passionate activist who runs Pawa254 and Diaper Mentality Boniface Mwangi claims that his life is in danger and he is seeking protection from Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to a letter addresses to the president, Mwangi wrote that “I am convinced that my life is in real danger. In the past one year, I have received many threats to my life, the most disturbing of which came from men who are considered loyal to you and your administration.

He however declined to reveal what threats he had received and who was threatening him but said that he should not be viewed as a threat to the country or the government claiming that .“I am just an artiste, who is concerned about things like justice and equality. I want the best for my country and the fact that sometimes I hold different views does not make me a threat. If I have broken any law, I should be arrested and charged — not threatened with death”

Boniface said a number of people had advised him to leave the country fearing for his safety but he had turned down their suggestions opting to stay put. He says that his most “persistent nightmare is catching a bullet in the back”

Radio Africa’s Carol Radull Is Bereaved

The sports fanatic is mourning after the sudden demise of her close cousin and friend, Fidel Castro Odinga, who is the eldest son of former premier and opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga.

Castro Odinga was found dead in his home in Karen early yesterday morning after what is believed to be a night out with friends the night before.

Speculation has been rife in the air over what exactly led to the demise of Raila’s son, but among those who feel the pinch of losing a loved one is Radio Africa’s Carol Radull.

According to Maina Kageni who works with Carol at the Westlands-based media house, Carol and the late Fidel were not just cousins but also very close friends.

Maina narrates how Fidel dearly loved his cousin Carol and that she (Carol) needs our support at this very trying moment when she is mourning the loss of Fidel Castro Odinga.

Maina posted:

“Fidel Odinga was one of the humblest people I knew. We weren’t very close friends but we checked up on each other from time to time. He loved his mother and father with his whole being, he was very protective over Raila Junior and he loved his cousin Carol Radull immensely. He loved life and lived his to the fullest. To Ida and Raila, sincere condolences. There can hardly be anything more painful than burying your child. To his wife, family and other relations, you are in my thoughts and prayers. To Fidel, go well, my friend and rest in peace. We shall meet again.”

Carol went on to share her photo with Fidel with the caption:

Rest in Peace Fidel

Robert Alai Hits Out At NTV For Allegedly Mocking Raila’s Family Following The Death Of Fidel

Even in grief, one Robert Alai is still making comments that cause more harm than good igniting a heated conversation on social media.

Did Robert Alai’s arrest mean anything to him? I doubt so, one can never really domesticate a wild fox. Even with the country still mourning the death of Raila’s son, Fidel Odinga, Alai still managed to raise a conspiracy out of it.

The whistle blower is poking holes on NTV reporting on Fidel’s death; Alai is alleging NTV was hitting at Raila and his family with its reporting.

Alai had a problem with how NTV was reporting on a section of people demonstrating along Ngong road looting business following the death of Fidel. Alai said NTV singled the demonstrators as a group of people from a certain ethnic origin.

Alai Further alleges NTV’s reporter had said Raila’s supporters didn’t care about Fidel’s death as it was business as usual in Raila’s home town of Bondo and Kisumu.

Here is what Alai wrote on his Facebook page:

NTV has done it can today to hit Raila Odinga and his family. First they started with how Luos were demonstrating on Ngong road to loot business.

Then Ouko Okusa reported from Bondo how the same Luos didn’t give a damn about the death of Raila Odinga’s son as business was kawaida in Bondo and Kisumu.

They finished the day with the tasteless XYZ show which satirised and mocked Raila despite what he is going through now. What is the intention of NTV?

Anyway that is just Alai, no need to raise alarm over his opinion.

Maina Kageni Reveals All He Knew About Fidel Odinga And His Relations With Him

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his family are grappling with a very hard tackle after their eldest son, Fidel Odinga was found dead in his bedroom at his home in Karen yesterday morning.

The country was taken aback by the untimely demise of Fidel, with the government moving in quickly to establish the cause of his death.

As the events unfold, tributes and condolences are tickling in from all corners of the republic and beyond, with those who personally knew Fidel revealing to us what they knew about him.

Among those disturbed by the sudden demise of Fidel Odinga is Classic 105’s Maina Kageni, who has taken to his social media platform to express his utter shock and disbelief of the death of Raila’s eldest son.

Maina says that he personally knew Fidel even though he was not a close confidant to the towering son of the former premier.

He goes on to shower praises on Fidel and regrets that his life was cut short at a young age. Maina also condoles his fellow employee Carol Radull who is Fidel’s cousin.

This is what Maina said:

“Fidel Odinga was one of the humblest people I knew. We weren’t very close friends but we checked up on each other from time to time. He loved his mother and father with his whole being, he was very protective over Raila Junior and he loved his cousin Carol Radull immensely. He loved life and lived his to the fullest. To Ida and Raila, sincere condolences. There can hardly be anything more painful than burying your child. To his wife, family and other relations, you are in my thoughts and prayers. To Fidel, go well, my friend and rest in peace. We shall meet again.”

The Star Newspaper Mis-reports Fidel Odinga’s Death.

Yesterday there was a clamor as every journalist, real or imagined ran  back and forth trying to be the first to break the story that Raila Odinga’s eldest son was no more.

In the clamor of likes, clicks and ad sense monies the star newspaper found itself in a little filthy corner when a writer by the name of Joseph Kariuki misreported and distorted the airs around the death of the former Prime Minister’s Son. According to him (or his sources) Fidel had passed on at the Nairobi hospital where he had been rushed by his wife! He would go on to say that the cause of his death was still unknown- But not quite, before ending his article would point out that Fidel had been with his father earlier that afternoon for lunch, According to him, Fidel later went out and returned home in the wee hours of Sunday Morning complaining of breathing problems, He was  rushed to Nairobi hospital where he passed on while being attended to by medics.

Here is a snip of what the star had reported ,immediately the death of Fidel hit the headlines.

B6fQYAGCUAANm57.jpg

shortly after realising that he had made a ghastly error, Joseph Kariuki amended his article…

10891762_982293998466768_5217835744443467939_n.jpg

The mainstream media bore the news that Fidel had passed on in his sleep after a night out with his friends. The cause of his  death was still under speculation (by conspiracy theorists and experts). The police had gone to the venue in a bid to unravel the mystery behind the sudden death of Fidel Odinga.

Seems like the star Knew things we didn’t or maybe they were reporting of a different Fidel- Their Fidel. A Fidel who passed on in Nairobi Hospital after complaining of breathing problems.

Comedian Wagithomo Hits Out At Churchill: Explains Why He Is No Longer On the Show

Yesterday, one of Churchill show Comedians took to social media to lash out at his employer Churchill calling him a wolf in sheepskin, adding that he was one mean guy.

This is what he posted:

“To all of you calling me and in-boxing me asking why I’m no longer on Churchill Raw/Show, let me state it here that you shouldn’t expect me anytime soon.
Some things are not always what they seem to be. That is one “f-ed up” company. Churchill is one guy that hides in sheepskin to create this facade of goodwill. The fact is, an artiste would rather do his act in a bar and for free than assume that his/her efforts will pay off under the “Churchill” umbrella. That is one mean guy. Too bad comedy in Kenya is still under a monopoly. But a day will come when..(let me not say more)..
#‎NoAssKissing

titus.jpg

I reached out to Churchill’s manager to find out what was going on in the Churchill forte that made Wagithomo rail at his employer on such a public platform.

“The biggest challenge we have in the comedy industry is that Churchill show happens once a week and has 70 comedians and it is difficult to give them a stage every week so only 15 are picked per week.” He started. Adding that “For one to be picked, all Churchill Show/ Raw comedians are expected to attend a meeting on Tuesday at the carnivore so that their acts are reviewed and they get to practice on Wednesday before they perform on Thursday.”

waguthomo.jpg

No one is exempted from the Tuesday even comedians who have made it such as Eric Omondi, Chipukeezy and David the student. Churchill is also expected to sending in his jokes for vetting incase he is not available . The jokes have to be vetted to make sure that they are up to par. If you do not attend the Tuesday meetings you do not perform at Thursday show. But Wagithomo allegedly failed to comply and did not attend the preliminary Tuesday meeting so he could not perform on Thursday with his partner. Making him dead weight since the other half of the Wagithomo duo showed up, but still could not perform as his partner was not present at the Tuesday meeting.

Churchill’s management reckons that Wagithomo’s failure to comply with the rules at Churchill is because Wagithomo felt frustrated that his career was not taking off as expected. There were no big cars, no fat checks, and the high life was a distant dream.

So was Wagithomo just acting out of frustration? Or did he have legit grievances? Make your opinion heard below.

Muslim Woman Almost Stripped At Popular Mall

Just last year, women from all walks of life religion and race took to the streets of Nairobi to protest the stripping of women most notably the stripping of a woman in red by Embassava Touts.

But the stripping situation is yet to fade away and it has not been reserved for skimpily dresses women but also women in full Islamic regalia.A lady by the name Muna Aden is livid after an incidence at Diamond Mall where she almost got stripped on suspicion of being a  terrorist. She gives us an account of the nasty incident that left her frustrated. She wrote this:

“I am a disappointed Kenyan today. I am a livid Muslim lady Today. And I shall tell you Why.

I walked into the dark blue windowed Diamond mall on Tom Mboya Street at half past noon today, upon which I was immediately accosted by a security guard who opened and searched my handbag thoroughly. At that point, It did not elude me that the 2 ladies behind me just walked past the guard to climb the stairs to the stalls on first floor. They both carried bags the same size as mine. It was also not lost on me that throughout the ten minutes that I later stood in front of a particular shop the guard did not go through any other ladies bags. I lie not.

I’m used to this. It is normal in Kenya today for a Muslim woman in full Hijab to be singled out like this and so I let it pass. I called the owner of the shop. She is one of the new generation business ladies with a popular Facebook page advertising maxi skirts .My favourite .She was running late and requested me to wait outside her shop which was directly below the stairs for a few minutes. And thus I stood in front of her shop, less than 50 cm from the guard who had just gone through my bag.

And that’s when She came , “Madam , why are you standing here? “ Turning to the guard “Why are you allowing her to stand here? Mbona unacompromise security yetu? Have you searched her? I was taken aback at how blunt she was. No sugar coating , nothing. I mean she could have spoken in her mother tongue to him ,which I now know he understood.

She was an elderly woman , and so I chose to indulge her . “”Ma’am, why me of all this people waiting around?, I am waiting for someone just like them ,What’s special about me?” .Her Reply, I still wonder why it surprised me. “Because of your clothes! We can never be sure with people like you and we have a right to question you!“. I was getting angry. “And I have a right not to reply “. “No you don’t!, you must answer when we ask you “.

The guard was meanwhile trying to explain that I was clear and waiting for someone ,upon which she walked away ,but not before several other ladies appeared from the stalls near the entrance . They Surrounded me, shouting. The guard stepped infront of me. One in Particular, who had emerged from the stall to the right hand side of the stairs , clad in a spaghetti top and a mini skirt was the loudest . “We shall ask you and you shall answer humbly, how do we know you are not carrying grenades in that bag? and we shall leave you alone only when you start dressing like a person “. “ My throat stung tasting the stupidity in her words . ”I agree, you are definitely more of a person in your mini. Please go back to your stall.” “Look at this al-Shabab , I swear if it was not for the soldier standing in front of you ,tungekustrip hiyo hijab ,tukutoe nje .” I don’t know how it happened but I found myself in front of her ,the guard now behind me ,daring her to touch any part of my attire. The nerve of the woman! She actually moved towards me but stopped just before the guard came in between us again. She had perhaps expected me to step back which I didn’t or expected the rest to join her, which they didn’t. She stepped back.

Just then the owner of the shop arrived and she was ever apologetic .”Dont mind them, they will not harm you ,It is because of your clothing that they are behaving like this “.I gave up. Sometimes, even I fail at replies .We were now inside her shop ,with the other ladies still yelling that she should not protect me just because I was her customer. We closed the door. I walked out a few minutes later and they escorted me with expletives.

Where do I even start? I could go on about the cliché that not all Muslims are terrorists ,that every person has their dress of choice ,(never mind the deliberate indecendency of some, it is all good as long as it is in the name of freedom),that terrorists are just deranged psychos who kill in the name of whatever religion and so on and so forth, but I shall not. If you do not know all this by now ,It is your affair ,Go educate yourself. Aaaah, the hypocrisy of it all! So it is ok for you to wear a miniskirt, run in the streets shouting my dress my choice, to turn around weeks later and shout at a Hijab wearer to dress like a person next time she enters a mall if she does not wish to have her Hijab stripped?

Mine is just to state, that for any individual who thinks it is Ok to harass me because of my dress ,they had best believe It is on. It is on until we get to the police station, and at the Station it will still be on and even after we leave the station ,it might still be on. I will not be boxed into the current guilt box all Muslims are expected to fit in when it comes to terrorism. I will not apologise for terrorists and I will not publicly condemn them any more than the average Kenyan because i am not one of them .Period. Therefore next time someone asks me why I am sitted or standing somewhere , they had better inquire with those doing the same next to me before they expect a sensible answer .Before any guard demands to go through my belongings ,he had better have gone through the belongings of the person before me. Why? Because I am not a second class citizen. Simple.

Silence on this and other such incidents would mean accepting and propagating baseless acts of discrimination and Islamophobia .I Refuse to do that .So for anyone who thinks the above should not have happened ,share this and let it be known that malls such as Diamond Mall and the like who disrespect and humiliate customers on the basis of their choice of dress shall be boycotted and entirely avoided.

Family of Former Lawyer Paul Magu Who Killed His Wife and His 3 Children Responds To Claims That He Rose Back From the Dead

Rumors on social media that Paul Magu had risen from the dead and was sighted severally by shocked people in Thika left a lot of us dazed and confused.

The claims got stranger when people alleged that Magu had even spoken to him mum saying that he would be home for Christmas.

Thankfully, his brother Andrew Muhiu has come out to clear the air. Speaking to Nairobi News, Andrew refuted the claims calling them an “unwelcome distraction to the family’s healing process.”

Adding that “After we lost the five members of my brother’s family, we have been trying to heal and now with all these stories on social media platforms things are getting tough”.

He also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading lies.

“My mother is a teacher and with schools reopening soon she needs to be at peace and secure. So when people say she is communicating with a dead person it is even a threat to her security” he said.

Magu and his family lost their lives in a slew of bizarre incidences a few months ago.

After Doing A Collabo With Sean Kingston,Bongo Superstar Visits Kenya

Many of us first came across Tanzanian Bongo artiste when he was a lanky lad trying to woo a girl in “Yule” and I fell in love with his music.

It’s been approximately a decade since we were introduced to him and unlike some of his counterparts such as Mr. Nice and Ray-C; A.Y has become a heavyweight in every sense of that word. The bongo star even produced a track with “Face Drop” singer Sean Kingston, a man who has collabod with Nicky Minaj and Justin Beiber.

The singer was recently in the country where he performed in Mombasa at a concert packed with avid loyal fans and even made a tribute to fallen Comrade E-Sir with a rendition of his hit song “Boomba Train”.

A show that was so impressive that it got the thumbs up from Radio God, Mzazi Willy Tuva

This Is Why Sauti Sol’s Polycarp Is Excited About H_art The Band

They brought us Uliza Kiatu,a timeless classic that credits shoes as the best witness to a person’s day to day struggle for love, bread and life .The song was met with rave reviews from critics and fans and it was clear that this band was going places.

And the group did not disappoint either in the new video for their latest release  “Nikikutazama”.
The video has this 60’s vibe, the afro, the groovy 60s fashion that takes at back to a simpler time when love was real. A time when relationships were not about bang-la-dashing but had the rosy blushing, the stolen glances, the kind of PDA that makes people around you uncomfortable. You know that kind where lovebirds are so lost in their love and are completely oblivious of their surroundings.

All in all I love this song and the video actually tells a story, it’s like a breath of fresh air, a great break from the booty claps and hand throwing. It’s above your average Kenyan song and it’s clear that 2015 is theirs for the taking. Even Polycarp from Sauti Sol thinks so:

This Was Caroline Mutoko’s Stirring Message to Former IG Kimaiyo Following His Resignation

Radio queen, Caroline Mutoko, reveals why Kamaiyo’s resignation from his post was more of a blessing to his career than a curse.

The resignation of former Inspector General of Police, David Kimayo, was a big reprieve to many Kenyans following deterioration of security in the country. One would easily think Kamaiyo’s resignation spelt doom to his career but not according to one Caroline Mutoko.

According to Caroline, if she was given a choice to resign or being fired by the president, she would have opted to resign. “Resignation and especially when you are able to craft your own part of the story, is a lifeline, it allows you to go on to do other things but almost to do it with your head up” disclosed Caroline.

Check out Caroline’s message to Kimaiyo on the video below:
