It is the Nairobi Restaurant Week, famously abbreviated as NRW. The NRW is a week specifically dedicated to showcase the different menus that Nairobi’s flashy and finest restaurants have, in a bid to attract eaters from across the city and beyond. And not just eaters, I mean eaters who are willing to eat well.
To know what the NRW entails, I took the initiative to have a firsthand experience. My friend and colleague Dennis Onderi, who writes stuff dealing with tour, travel, hospitality and related things for our sister blog Tambaa Kenya, was also interested in this stuff.
So we researched on the finest restaurant where we could satisfy our desire to know what Kenya offers its people. We landed on one of the finest restaurants located in the outskirts of the CBD.
The cab was at hand and we drove off to ABC Place in Westlands.
After undergoing the necessary procedures at the gate, we were showed the entrance to 360 Degrees. A nice place with glassed walls and serene environment it was. At the entrance, an inviting face smiled from the counter.
“Oh my God, this is the place…the serenity at this place is awesome…the counter, the tables, the seats…with women like this, I will be tempted to sell my ancestral piece of land back in the village, become a prodigal son and spend it here, just to see these women”, I stupidly thought.
“Hello, welcome to 360 Degrees, I am… (I can’t remember her name coz to be honest I was more interested in her looks than the name)”, the beautiful lady introduced herself amid handshakes. We exchanged the pleasantries and she led us to a table, well dressed, waiting for ‘eaters’.
What shocked me most is the fact that almost everybody who saw us smiled warmly, indicating that everything was ok in this place. I felt at home for once and thought to myself, “life would have been so sweet if everybody smiled every day, including my landlady at the end of the month.”

Inside 360 Degrees where guests are enjoying the serene and cool environment
Steve Mburu, as I came to learn his name, walked up to us, introduced himself and presented us with the day’s menu. I am not talking about it now but straight to the oven, where Kenya’s best Pizza is cooked by Kenya’s best chef, a chef who flew all the way to Naples in Italy to learn just how to cook the best pizza.
Almost everything here is Italian: the Chef, the oven, the flour, the ingredients and almost everything. All under one roof. (Italians are the best cooks the world has ever produced. They study PHD in cooking I understad)
Gilbert Ngigi (the pizzaiollo) warmly welcomes us to his section. He is a swift guy, so swift. I guess it is the keenness that pizza preparation requires that has made him that swift. We take our seats on the counter, near the oven, I mean the Italian oven.
Then Ngigi welcomes us, again, as he smiles towards the oven. “This is the place, and this is the person”, Ngigi tells us. Immediately a flurry of questions ensue as we get entertained with the revelations about pizza preparation.
Under close to 360 degrees celcius (perhaps this is where they got their name from) of heat, Pizza burns in less than 90 seconds and gets into your mouth. That is one and half minutes. With this heat, anything, including stones and metal, can burn beyond recognition.

The Italian Oven that makes pizza
At 360 Degrees restaurant, you will find the most unique and quality pizza. Glibert is the man behind this sweetness. He flew to Italy purposely to gel his skills in Pizza cooking. He was there for a record two months, in Naples and then flew back to Kenya, to entertain Kenyans with what many crave.
The whole process of preparing pizza is tedious but for Gilbert, it runs deep down his blood. He does it with the ease of jumping to bed.
Within a minute or so, you have your pizza, sweet as ever, served with whatever you want. As I told you early, everything here is served swiftly. I mean the attention a customer gets will prompt you to make another trip here.
As we watch with our mouths agape, a smartly groomed man walks into the restaurant. Gilbert tells us that is the general manager. We would love to have a word with him. So we signal Steve who hurriedly comes over. We request that he allows us to speak to the general manager. It is agreed.
The guy walks straight to us, introduces himself as Victon Lugaga and warmly welcomes us to 360 Degrees. He takes his seat and his time and talks to us.
He is a cool guy with a real English accent. Amid talks, a beautiful lady comes over, greets us warmly, introduces herself and places some juice on our table. “Welcome please”, she says with a smile and walks away. I feel good. So is my colleague Dennis amid seeps of the juicy juice.
Gilbert then prepares us pizza laced with beef. What a meal! We devour the pizza as the GM walks away to attend other visitors. I turn to Gilbert and confess, “I have eaten pizza before but this one…sweet!”
“That is direct from the pizza iollo himself”, Gilbert says amid laughter. I ask what that means and he explains that it is Italian meaning someone who is good at something. I immediately assume the title entertainment iollo. That is my title.

Gilbert Ngigi, the pizzaiollo
Then we are served with chocolate cake with creamy mocha frosting…Believe it this is a meal and half.
We started with Starter…here, we were served with Fried squash blossoms. This is stuffed with Ricotta and Herbs. Then came what they call the main course. Here, we are served with Steak Diablo. This is made up of thinly sliced prime beef, red bullet chilies, mozzarella, red onions and garlic. And now with what they again call a dessert. Here we ate, Aly’s Mocha Cake. This is chocolate cake with creamy mocha frosting.
We are through with gathering news and eating. They say experience is the best teacher. Ours is. We’ve learnt. We move to the counter where Steve is seated welcoming guests. Besides him is another beautiful lady. He introduces her to us. She is the accountant. She smiles beautifully and tells us to visit again.
I tell Dennis I will probably try and go there again: to eat, to see Victon, Steve and Gilbert, and most importantly, to have a chat with some people I could not meet due to the busy schedule.
360 Degrees is the place. There is Java there. There is also Caramel. However, at the end of the day I never regretted why I chose 360 Degrees. It is the place for many. The number of customers flocking there is a testimony.
Capital Club has its Italian Chef, Luigi Frascella. But 360 Degrees has its own Italy-trained Kenyan Chef, Gilbert Ngigi. The man behind the best Pizza in Kenya.
