It’s uncommon to come across funny girls. They’re a rarity,a gem,a scarce commodity.
Even in the official comedy circles,that is,television and Radio and even stage, funny girls are a little too scattered allover the place… Unlike the funny boys who are all the rage.
In fact,worldwide,female comedians are pretty countable. And it always seems like only the fat girls,especially in Hollywood,that get to end up as the most bankable – and genuinely hilarious – stars.
Monique (Lord,I love me some Monique),Melissa McCarthy,Amy Schumer,Rebel Wilson.
Locally,we have our own funny girls too – although they are too few.
It gets so hard to find a genuinely gifted female comic,with all the ingredients required,that we had to settle for a man (Kevin Mwangi) acting as a woman named Shaniqwa on the KTN show Jameni.
But with the likes of Chemutai,Mamito,Teacher Wanjiku,Awinja and a couple others,we are not doing so bad. But we terribly need to raise up that number. Much higher.
Away from the small screen and off to social media… Where most of the action seems to be going on lately.
Like a silent revolution,that wasn’t televised and didn’t need a leader,Facebook seems to have been taken over by a gang of some terribly fierce girls armed with some great sense of humor,brilliant writing skills,some mad comedic chops and a very cheery outlook on life .
And,also,they’re slowly taking over… gathering hundreds – sometimes even thousands – of LIKES and sweeping away the Internet with their witty jokes,knockout punchlines,hilarious analogies and kickass one-liners.
This Kingdom of the Female Facebook Comics seem to be led by the notoriously private and enigmatic Wanja Kavengi – a Facebook legend who first appeared and then mysteriously disappeared with quite the bang and under a huge cloud of identity controversy and then reappeared,emboldened,rejuvenated,reborn,restructured.
Wanja is so dangerously popular it leaves your head buzzing and twirling.
An astute writer with topnotch dexterity with words,Wanja is a force so powerful,a tool so lethal,you need some sort of insurance cover before you can follow her – and keep up with her brilliantly worded escapades and life stories beautifully crafted into little written masterpieces.
But when I say little,I kid. Nothing in Wanja’s life is little. Her posts can be tediously long but you won’t even know it by the time you’re reading the very last sentence,after putting up with some eight or so heavy paragraphs of wonderment and hilarity and discourse.
Wanja’s Facebook posts all mostly all about her little life that she quietly lives with her little son and somewhat irksome neighbors who, time and again,won’t stop getting on her delicate nerves.
She’s like a one-man Television series… Taking her fans (and they are soooo many) through weekly episodes of what’s new and what’s crazy and what’s wild and what’s downright unacceptable in her life.
Most of her episodes attract thousands and thousands of LIKES… sometimes,they run into ten thousand plus.
And she’s not even a Celebrity. Or a major public figure. Just a quiet mother of one little boy who has found her niche and acted on it. One joke after another.
Bold and Beautiful,Wandia Wadear
And then we have Wandia Wadear… a funny mix of the new and the old,the urban and the village,the digital and then analogue,the funny and the grumpy.
Wandia is some girl that lives deep in the cold valleys of the potato capital, Kinangop. A life she,if you follow her keenly,clearly relishes and would kill for.
Her daily escapades in her little dusty town,overrun by nduthis, are her lifeline – her inspiration and her source of juice. Her village is her muse and her rundown life is her spark.
She’s the master of the village tales…on top of her other broader topics.
If you’ve followed her religiously,you realize just how tough it must be to be her – and to have to keep up with the hectic village life she leads,surrounded by not-so-inspiring folks.
It could all be an act. Or reality. We really can’t tell. But she’s pulling off the facade incredibly well.
Her musings are a gem. Her writing skills are off the wall and she won’t waste no time telling you off and whining her day away,hilariously of course in a way that’s so relatable,so poignant, you will be smiling throughout the entire read.
Throw in Bunny M Wamboi, a young lass with a pretty face and even prettier eyes who has some of the wickedest punchlines in town.
Her topics are many – Bae,breakups,bad relationships,food,bedsitters,being broke,hipness,more Baes,more relationships,everything crazy and wild.
She’s also a little naughty too. And prefers to call herself Ex wa Trey Songz. If only….
Eye-candy Bunny M Wamboi
Crazy head,Beatrice Nzisa Wambua
With very few words,Bunny can send you flying off the chair laughing yourself lame. As will Beatrice Nzisa Wambua,the Coast-based selfie-loving wild spirit who says what she wants,when she wants,how she wants and seems to have very little chills,so to speak.
Like Bunny,Beatrice is a lady of few words. In fact,very few.
Her audience likes their jokes delivered smoking hot and in short,straight to the point one-liners laced with deep humor and very relatable situations.
Miss Nzisa does exactly that – and more.
Delivering her punches mostly in Sheng,Beatrice can go off on pretty much anything,leaving you in stitches for days on end.
She has a loyal army that views her as their Ghetto Princess… And she keeps them fed,one sick punchline after another.
Also,she won’t bother much on being your everyday petty girl…Makeups and weaves and Brazilian wigs,stilettos,fancy handbags and shiny Jewelery isn’t her thing. She’s as natural as they come…And she prefers to notoriously keep it that way. Take it or leave it.
Girls are starting to come out and show themselves… Talk more,express themselves more,laugh at themselves and open up their little world to their followers,offering a window into their lives and doing so in the most hilarious way ever.
The list seems to be growing everyday… With veterans like Beryl Itindi still holding it down,complete with the bald head,badass posts and very revealing masterfully-worded pieces. Don’t forget that attitude. That sassy,bag girl attitude that she just cant shake off. Won’t shake off.
She’s moved on to bigger things (newspapers and all) and while the other girls still haven’t,it’s only a matter of time.
This goes on to show that a new force is awakening. A female force that,even without having to strip down to their undies,even without having the cosmetic beauty that social media judges women by,even without having to flash around their wealth and splash photos of their luxurious life across the Internet,is now winning the Internet and amassing thousands of followers.
Not for their cheapness and vanity,not for their notoriety and steamy pics,but for their brilliant brains,comedic skills and simple,humble existences.
May these girls live on. And make us laugh one more day.
