Mercury Lounge Offers Shots to Bring Zack Back Home (Updated)

The ‘Bring Zack Back Home’ initiative has received another boost as Social Media guru Jackie Marura came up with a brilliant concept to support efforts for the construction of Kenya’s very first Spinal Injury Cord Rehabilitation center.

Jackie got the chance to talk to Zack last week and eventually got to meet him. The campaign struck a cord with her primarily because her father was involved in an accident about 10 years ago which resulted in a spinal injury and broken neck. Fortunately he was flown out for treatment though and he is fine today.

“Unfortunately, a majority of Kenyans don’t have the luxury of medical insurance to cover that kind of (expensive) treatment,” Jackie told Ghafla! yesterday.

The ‘Bring Zack Back Home’ Campaign, an initiative of the Kenya Paraplegic Association, aims at constructing a Kshs. 250 million spinal cord injury rehabilitation center right here in Nairobi and is calling on all Kenyans to contribute what they can to realizing this vision.

Jackie approached Mercury and they agreed to host the event ‘Bring Zack Back Night’. The group also got Smironoff to contribute Vodka so that all proceeds from the shots will go to the campaign. Mercury will also do virtual shots worth Kshs. 200 each, like they did for the Kenyans for Kenya Campaign which was a huge success.

Great DJs like DJ D-lite, Jack Rooster and DJ Protege have also agreed to spin for free on the night.

Safaricom is supporting the event in that the invite is out to all its staff with the PR department also helping out and CEO Bob Collymore will also be at the event as well.

In the meantime Zack is travelling on his way to South Africa because that’s where the nearest spinal cord injury rehabilitation centre is located.

‘Bring Zack Back Night’ will be this Friday night and the lounge will be offering virtual shots at only Kshs.200, of which all proceeds will go towards the ‘Bring Zack Back Home’ initiative. Be a part of the change, go to either Mercury ABC or the Junction.

Kenyan Actor Kevin Ndege Wins Best Actor Award in Zanzibar

Actor Kevin Ndege won the Zuku Best Actor award at the just concluded Zanzibar International Film Festival for his leading role in the rivetting drama ‘Inside Story’.

Kevin, who is currently based in Los Angeles, California rose to fame with his role in the KTN television drama ‘Changing Times’ alongside other young Kenyan stars.

The film ‘Inside Story’ was part of efforts by the Discovery Channel’s Global Educative Fund in conjunction with PEPFAR, SEACOM, UNAIDS and a cross section of regional and international agencies.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the film, compiled by 2Die4:

The Inside Story is about a young man from Kenya who dreams of a professional soccer career. He moves to South Africa, begins a promising relationship with the coach’s daughter, and is on the verge of soccer stardom when he learns he is HIV positive.

INSIDE STORY takes us on a remarkable journey – from rural Kenya to inner-city Jo’burg and then inside our hero’s body (Kevin Ndege)

Fusing the best of fiction and nonfiction storytelling, INSIDE STORY unravels the mystery of how HIV works through a compelling African film. Instead of telling people what to do, INSIDE STORY provides information about HIV in a way that is personal, practical, and memorable.

At the awards ceremony, the regional pay TV channel Zuku TV pledged to sponsor the Zanzibar International Film Festival over a period of 10 years for a total of $1million.

Here’s the trailer to the film…

Rapper tells why he doesn’t think Frasha should judge the ‘Don’t break the beat’ competition

The ‘Don’t Break The Beat‘ rapping competition kicked off a few weeks back and has seen numerous rappers from all over Kenya try their hand in this Nokia competition which is offering Sh. 250, 000 to the winner.

Among the judges of this epic rapping competition which requires rapper to perform freestyle sessions with a battle approach with other rappers, are Nazizi, Point Blank and P Unit’s Frasha among others.

One of Kenya’s fastest rising rappers and a favorite to a huge number of fans, Khaligraph Jones has however called out Frasha as not being worthy of the ‘Judge’ title/position in this competition which is part of the reason why he is not Participating in it.

You know that we had to get the whole story behind this juicy complain and therefore we got in touch with Khaligraph Jones in our recent interview with the artist.

On this matter, this is what he had to say.

And now, a song to fight corruption

Most artistes (in the entire field of art) have lately been going deep in the political arena. Each contributing their piece in a matter that the feel affects society seriously.

This is precisely the case with this band that has taken the fight of corruption to the music scene. The Kijani Kibichi Band have gone hard with their latest track ‘Mi na Wewe’ which is entirely dedicated to campaigning against corruption and those that take part in it.

The five piece band in this song simply encourages people to start fighting corruption from within themselves, before attacking others.

Check it out.

Jackie Chandiru, of the ‘Gold Digger’ Fame, Signs Onto Kenyan Label

Ugandan musician Jackie Chandiru of the ‘Gold Digger’ musical fame has become the latest artiste to sign onto Kenya-based label M-Tech in a deal which the artiste said she is extremely excited about, according to a statement released last week by VibeWeekly.

Jackie was in Kenya barely three weeks ago for a live performance at the ongoing Tusker Project Fame season 5 competition. She sang her single ‘Gold Digger’ which has not only been ruling regional airwaves and music charts but was also extensively performed by contestants on East Africa’s largest reality TV talent show.

Chandiru joins the likes of Habida and Nazizi who are other artistes who are signed onto the M-Tech management label. She was formerly a member of the hugely successful Ugandan group Blu 3 and had just this past month released her brand new single called ‘Don’t Call His Phone’ which Ugandan media have taken with fairly mixed reactions assuming the song is a swipe at her fiance’s ex-wife.

Have a listen to the track below.

Are The Wakimbizi Making a Comeback?!

Wakimibizi are going to perform at an upcoming event. The group will be guest artistes at the upcoming DAF Open Mic 2 on the 29th of July. The duo will perform alongside Montana and Mashujaa at the event which will take place at the Dagoretti Educational Centre between 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. Entry is free.

The group was formed in the mid ’90s by brothers Morris and Henry Masheti using the stage names Mariko and Mr. Filter respectively. They started recording with DJ Stone at Bedrock Studios. In 2003 they added a new members, Mr. Andre who left two years later.

They released their biggest hits in the mid 2000s with Hallo Hallo and John. After the success of those two songs–which received numerous airplay, won many awards and even an endorsement deal–the group has kept a low profile. It remains to be seen if the group will make a comeback after the Sunday show.

BBA Update: “They all hate Prezzo!” -Jannette admits

Uganda’s Jannette recently opened up about how the rest of the downvillers feel about Kenya’s own King of Bling.

And this really has me feeling vindicated given that most chaps think i’m looking for conspiracies. In a recent Diary Session, i was happy to see a Downviller spill the beans about the truth and now every Kenyan knows for a fact that my parroting about #TeamKenya has gained credence!

It’s actually self-scientific really cos Kenyans like Nigerians are a force to be reckoned with. And who is left that can conceivably compete with South Africa’s darling Keagan? Think about it. That’s why i keep talking about Kenyans coming together as a nation and letting their inner lion get channelled.

And why do i feel Keagan is behind this? Well, Keagan is the de facto leader of the hive: the Queen Bee so to speak and he has the other Downvillers milling around him like drones. He has clearly instigated the Downville Take Over garbage that had saw Alex throw all sensibilities out the window!

Again though this is my opinion, i wait to be vindicated as the days go by. For now check out Jannette’s confession:

Khaligraph Jones on the so called ‘beef with Camp Mulla’

Being one of the best rappers in Kenya right now, people will actually listen and enquire about some of the lyrics that come out of a song. This is precisely why we had to find out exactly what’s up with the lyrics from one of the Kenyan cyphers.

The People’s Choice Cypher is one of the best cyphers to come from Kenyan rappers but the lyrics in it, as it may seem, could be attacking one of the best and fastest rising hip hop groups in Africa, Camp Mulla.

Khaligraph Jones, one of the rappers from the People’s Choice Cypher, as most fans see, appears to be taking hard shots at Camp Mulla in this raw cypher. That is however not the case as we came to find out from the rapper.

Apparently, we all misinterpreted the lyrics and they are not shots at all, but simple rhymes. Take a look at this exclusive Ghafla interview with Khaligraph Jones, talking about the lyrics and much more.

BBA Update: Alex plan backfires and sees him eliminated without a single vote!

Alex thought he had a plan. he believed he was the man with a plan.

And his plan was to sell out Kenya. But if you’ve read the Gospels or watched The Godfather, Goodfellaz or The Sopranos, you know how it goes for Judas and his ilk.
Kenyans are an unforgiving lot! You cross them and you’re better off sodding off! That is a point i have learnt from Alex’ debacle! Even Nigerians weren’t as vindictive to Goldie!
Alex would have been better off crossing La Costra Nostra than the proud people of the beautiful land called Kenya! We Kenyans are a race of people who know what it means to struggle, survive then flourish so when you cross one of our own, you’re better off harvesting your own organs!
The beautiful Tina Kaggia had a discussion earlier today about Alex tact going into the competition but i assert that he had none! If his masterplan was to turn on his countryman, he is better off claiming to have had no plan.
It’s said that history repeats itself ergo studying it is of paramount importance but no-one gave this yob the memo! Kaz turned on didge and Kenya turned their back on her. She struggled for a while to find footing and though she did, her’s was a bitter lesson.
It is said by the ancient Romans (i believe Lucretius) that a wise man learns from the mistakes of others, a fool from his own. That is a harsh lesson Alex will have to learn. He should never have turned his back on the beautiful people of this great nation!
So now it’s back to #TeamPrezzo! Sad that Alex went out without a single vote!

Kenyan rappers actually freestyle on Cyphers?… Really?

Lately, Kenyan rappers have been going extremely hard on cyphers. Audio recordings and videos have been unleashed to showcase what Kenyan rappers can actually do when they step up to the mic.

So far, most of the cyphers that have been shot have moslty been uploaded to YouTube for everyone to view. As I watch and enjoy the endless, back to back, rapping sessions that the rappers participate in, as a deejay provides the instrumentals at the back, I can’t help but wonder, are these rappers freestyling on these cyphers, or are all these just written lyrics to yet another track?

By definition, a cypher is a rap session where a group of rappers freestyle on a beat, back to back. Not written lyrics, no. FREESTYLE. It is with this in mind that we approached one of the best rappers in Kenya, Khaligraph Jones, on this matter seeing as he was part of one of the hottest cyphers from Kenya, ‘People’s Choice Cypher‘. This is what he had to say.

Prezzo: I want to have a nookie so bad

Prezzo has finally come out and admitted how much he misses sex. I feel the lonely President. He has been quite strong though. 77 days, wow!

Lately, Prezzo has been experiencing some very weird visions. It is getting harder every other day to go on without ‘getting some’ and this is really getting to him and his fellow housemate in distress, Wati.

Last night, they couldn’t help but confide in each other about how much they miss ‘hitting it’. Prezzo has even started seeing things.

“Last night, it’s all I could think of. Every time I tried to close my eyes last night, I would just see a shorty,” Prezzo told Wati in an emotional conversation. I just hope he can hold it long enough to the end of the game but Lady May is not helping at all, walking around the house half naked.

New Music Alert: You Can Finally Listen to Bamboo’s Africa’s Calling Online

Bamboo’s Africa Calling was released last week on radio and this week you can finally listen to it online. The track features vocalist Lavosti and was produced by K Tha Great and mastered by G Soul. The track was released by Phoenix Records.

Bamboo made a name as a rapper during his days as a member of the K-South hip hop group together with Abbas. He later went solo and did a couple of tracks including the very popular Compe. This will be Bamboo’s first performance since his arrival in the country.

The best part about the Africa’s Calling is the grand feel rounded off with an epic chorus by the very talented Lavosti, which I must say almost sounds like a Coca-Cola ad. As we wait for the video which has already been shot, check out the awesome track below.

It used to be so easy. A flashy tiara Red Bottom Shoes, a dress the size of a van, a tub of white lead powder and a casually slung ermine were enough to denote power and inspire loyalty. But in this godforsaken age of topless sunbathing and Las Vegas pool parties, crinolines and crowns are no longer the default setting for princesses..

Prezzo not going through with the voluntary exit after all

I think it’s now safe to assume that the only Kenyan representative left in the Big Brother House is not thinking of surprising us with a voluntary exit. To even think that Prezzo would think about something like this again, is just criminal.

Turns out that he is not a wuss after all. Hopefully, this was part of his strategy, throwing the rest of the housemates off their game, maybe. Or maybe, just maybe, he was actually thinking of coming home because some of the boys decided he is not popular anymore. That would have been a real disappointment. I mean, really?

Anyway, all that’s past now. He has actually made it this far and we are about to go harder on the voting than we have ever done. This time, the money is coming home with us, considering Prezzo got the most votes this weekend (along with Lady May… not too much competition here).

So let’s get to it.

Zimbabwean Artiste WeUtonga Asks Fans on Facebook to Get Her to Kenya

Being invited to perform at the September Edition of what is arguably East Africa’s premier Afro-fusion event, Blankets and Wine, was a ‘dream come true’ for Zimbabwean artiste Edith WeUtonga.

Unfortunately those dreams come with an US$8,000 (approximately Kshs. 680,000) price tag, one which Edith and her eight-piece band cannot afford.

Edith has been to countless potential corporate sponsors around Harare, Zimbabwe as well as other wealthy prospects but so far she has been turned down countlessly. Faced with limited options but committed to making it to Nairobi for the September 2nd date, the artiste has resorted to drumming up support from her fans on social media avenues and more so on Facebook.

“We require at least US$900 per person for the air fare and the yellow fever vaccination for each person costs about US$40 and that will bring the total to US$8 000,” she told Zimbabwe’s Sunday Mail. “The reason why I had to take that risk of asking help from my fans is because I feel I have worked hard enough to be where I am right now and cannot risk blowing the chance of performing in East Africa away.”

Zimbabwean media are baffled as to how an artiste of her calibre would resort to asking her fans for financial assistance but Edith flatly said:

“What I have done may disappoint many people who thought I was in a better position to help myself and most probably give back to the community, but the truth is I don’t have the money.”

Her latest post on Facebook was on Saturday where she wrote:

Goodmorning good people!!to all my fb family in Zimbabwe, please be advised that there is an account you can use for your contribution to my trip to Kenya.all you have to do is inbox me,and i wil send it to to you.thank you so much for the support.i kno with you by my side its gonna happen.

On successful arrival in Nairobi however, Blankets and Wine would offer Edith and her band accomodation, food and per diems. Edith is requesting for contributions of not less than US$10. You can see her Facebook page: Edith WeUtonga.

Kenyan model lands a role in American rapper T.I’s show

He might just be on the same path that super model Ajuma was a few years back. Though he had no plans or desire of becoming a model, Jared Okeyo has found himself on this fabulous road and he loves it.

Funny enough, he started modeling by chance. Apparently, a photographer approached him in a night club two years ago, and that is when it all started. The fashion model who is currently based in Atlanta, Georgia, was recently featured in American rapper T.I‘s reality TV show, T.I & Tiny Show which can be viewed on MTV.

That’s not all. Jared has also made appearances in other hard hitting programmes like The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

“On the shows I was playing the lead role as a model. I did an AKOO clothing line fashion show owned by rapper T.I. Besides this, I just did a Marcy’s and Sean John fashion show recently and I’m also working with supermodel Cynthia Bailey closely. I had fun with the Real Housewives of Atlanta ladies, they love me and I love them back,” Jared told sources.
