Catch Rabbit live today at the Mr & Miss Kenya Poly

The Mr & Miss Poly event is going down tonight and everybody affiliated with it is all excited and they have good reason for that. Three awesome artistes will be performing at the pageant tonight.

Rabbit aka Kaka Sungura will be the main performing artiste tonight at the Kenya Poly University Grounds from 6PM till dawn (5th October 2012).

Rabbit will also be joined on stage by Jay A and Chess, two of the fastest rising artistes in Kenya right now. That’s not even half of it. Deejays Hassan and JR will be rocking the crowd on the decks through out the night as Mzazi Willy M Tuva will be the MC.

See you there.

More shots taken at Octopizzo

Fans are now getting confused with these ‘shots’ that are randomly being taken between rappers. Are they just a call to fame or is it really based on realistic beefs? This is not the only rapper that has lately been going H.A.M on Octopizzo.

Mwakenya has once again trashed Octopizzo. Through his facebook page, he went all out on Octo, claiming that he has run out of content, thus his new business of selling pencils.
Okay, Mwakenya did not mention Octopizzo’s name, but seriously, who else could this be about?

“Ukiskia rapper ameanza kuuza kalamu jua kazi ya kalamu imeisha
yaani mistari zimeisha…next utaskia wanatafuta stall Muthurua…
kuuza both CDs bt wase watabuy yenye watajibamba nayo,” said Mwakenya.

Chidinma Coming to Nairobi

Chidinma Ekile also known as “the small girl with the big voice” is set to jet into the country for this year’s Naija Nite Kenya chapter. The Kedike hit maker will be one of the international acts that will be gracing the occasion.

Chidinma was first ever female winner of the MTN Project Fame West Africa reality TV show and has been called “the small girl with big voice” thanks to her petite size and powerful voice. According to Word Is, the singer will be joined on stage by Uganda’s Keko and Jackie Chandiru during her Kenyan visit.

Chidinma is also famed for her “Jankoliko” hit track which she featured Sound Sultan. Though the venue for the event has not been confirmed yet, I am upbeat that the event will sure be a memorable one.

Nairobi Half Life Invades Germany

Nairobi Half invaded the Durban International Film Festival and earned Joseph K. Wairimu with a Best Actor award. It then invaded the Kenyan cinemas, filled theatres like no other Kenyan film had before and broke records.

As we wait for it to invade the Oscars, the film is just about to begin a month-long run in Germany and posters of the scene have invaded the capital city. The following photos were taken around Berlin.

Actor Olwenya Maina who plays Oti in the film and director Tosh Gitonga are set to travel to the country to promote the film. Check out photos of the posters below.

TPF2 Winner Given Millions by Museveni to End Beef

Esther Nabaasa the winner of TPF 2 has been handed millions by Ugandan State House in a bid to resolve her differences with another Ugandan musician over her song.

This is how the drama started: On 5th September Esther launched her official Golden Jubilee song, “Yoga Yoga” however less than 72 hours later, another artiste, Richard Kaweesa, claimed that he was the brains behind the song. Esther could not take this lying down, so on September 6th, she threatened to take the issue to another level unless something was done to change the situation.

Esther claimed that she did most of the work as far as the “Yoga Yoga” song is concerned but to her surprise, the Spirit of Africa Ltd owned by Kaweesa was taking all the credit. Kaweesa however took the beef to a whole new level when he posted on Facebook this: “When a thief steals from you and then invites you to come to a public function to witness his ownership claim of what he stole from you; and you actually turn up and say nothing; then I consider you hopeless!”

Sooooo, seeing this entire circus that threatened to destroy an otherwise good relationship between a great musician and her producer, President Museveni has allegedly stepped in to solve this issue amicably. According to the Red Pepper, the State House has “intervened and paid off millions”.

Mmmhhhh!!! Do you think Baba Jimmy would do this?

Shaffie to go to Al-shabaab Land to open clinics

He is one of the craziest and most extravagant radio presenters that Kenya has ever seen. He knows exactly how to have fun and he surely has it. So, you can imagine my reaction when I first heard that Shaffie Weru is heading to Somalia, specifically Kismayu (the war zone) to do some charity work. Yes, I am for real.

Shaffie has shown some compassion for the citizens of the war torn Somalia and has decided to take matters into his own hands. Shaffie, who is now the Ambassador of Mulnary International (a charity organisation), is set to travel to Somalia where he will be opening up seven clinics all over, down to Kismayu.

He has even chipped in some of hismoney to this worthy cause that will see many salvaged.

Rwandese Hip-Hop Artiste Insults Journalists after Leaving Kenya

Journalists are the last people you would want to mess with because as they say media makes and breaks an individual. However one Jay Polly is oblivious of that. The Rwandese hip-hop artiste recently lashed out at journalists during his business trip to Kenya and Tanzania.

The “Ndacyariho” star was not amused after a journalist from his home country wrote alleging that he was briefly thrown behind Kenyan bars after being nabbed trying to use forged travel documents to find his way to England. Scorned Jay Polly ended up using words like “…empty cylinders” to describe such journalists, something that did not augur well with a section of journalists as some radio presenters vowed to delete the artiste’s songs from their music cache.

Realizing his mistake, the troubled hip-hop musician has now come out publicly to apologize to the media for insulting some of the local showbiz journalists who broke news. He also insists that he made the controversial statements out of anger but meant no harm.

Talk of epic slip of the tongue.

Hilarious Local Comedy to Open the Kenya International Film Festival

The Captain of Nakara, a Kenyan comedy directed by renown film director Bob Nyanja has been selected to open the 2012 Kenya International Film Festivals.

The screening will also serve as its local premiere as it has not yet been publicly screened in Kenya. The opening will be held at the Kenya National Museum at the opening ceremony of the 7th edition of the Kenya International Film Festival on the 24th October.

The Captain of Nakara is directed by Bob Nyanja and stars Bernard Safari as Muntu, Charles Bukeko as General Lumumba and Shirleen Wanjari as Muna among others. Muntu is a criminal who has just been released from prison with his pal, Sunday, following a celebration of the president’s birthday. He is afraid of losing the woman of his dreams and pretends to own a profitable market stall.

Bob Nyanja said, “We are delighted that Captain of Nakara will be the opening film at this year’s Kenya International Film Festivals. It was an exciting project to work on and is a key milestone as it is the first full feature comedy film made by Kenyans and starred by Kenyan talent.”

Keeping in line with the Kenya International Film Festivals style, Captain of Nakara will screen for the first time in the Kenyan public. Last year, KIFF showcased The First Grader first public screening in Kenya. The First grader was also named as the Best Feature whereas Oliver Litondo who was the starred as Mzee Maruge was crowned Best Actor last year.

Check out the trailer for The Captain of Nakara below.

Uganda’s Navio to record with his former classmate, Madtraxx

So, Navio has been in the country for a while now, and his time spent here has proved to be fruitful. He managed to get closer to his Kenyan fans through an interview with Nonini on 1FM, and even gave the ladies some relationship advice.

It would now seem as though the relationship between Ugandan and Kenyan artiste is getting stronger by the day. Just recently, Chameleon flew into the country to record what is already being called a hit with Jaguar. Now, Navio is already collaborating with Kenya’s hit maker, Madtraxx on a song titled ‘A Lot’. Taking to account the fact that the two were in the same school, there should be some good chemistry between them that will be evident in the track.

They are currently working on the track and it is only a matter of time before it is released, together with the video. Is this hot or what?

Storymoja Hay Festival Writer Wins $500,000

Kenya is finally getting international recognition in the showbiz arena now that more and more accolades are heading code 254. Well, a guest writer during the Storymoja Hay Festival 2012 has become a recipient of the 2012 $500,000 MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant.

Ethiopian born, US based Dinaw Mengestu won the coveted prize thanks to his “The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears” and “How to Read the Air” books. The author is the latest entrant in a group of other people in diverse fields to get this grant where the winner walks away with a whooping US$100,000 for five years.

The only African who has ever won the award is Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie back in 2008 for her books; “Half of a yellow sun” and “Purple Hibiscus”.

Congrats lad.

Rabbit’s new video ‘Haiwess make’ is finally out

Rabbit has been all over the music industry making his presence felt by the number of tracks he dishes out constantly. After the ‘Orutu ya Masudi’ album which was launched just a few months ago, Rabbit hasn’t held back at all at the production of music.

Even after starting his own clothing line, he is still going H.A.M on the tracks, and he has just launched the video of his latest one, ‘Haiwess Make’ featuring beautiful singer Chess.

In this song, Rabbit raps about one of those days that all your nookie plans fail and every attempt to get laid hits the wall. What a sad reality it is. Could even turn a wonderful day into a nightmare. I feel Rabbit on this one. He uses an up to the time video to illustrate this story. I’m talking technological illusions and what not. You really wanna see this video.

Check it out below.

By the end of the month, The Academy will have vetted the films and weeded out the ones that do not meet the strict requirements. Between now and the end of the year, dozens of films will be eliminated from the line-up.

A list of nine will be announced on January 3rd and the final five nominees named on the 10th of January together with the rest of the films in other categories.

There are only two other submissions from Africa: Algeria’s Zabana by Saïd Ould Khelifa and South Africa’s Little One by Darrell Roodt. Mzungu, the Next Big Film in Kenya, Needs Your Help

“Mzungu is a feature film that explores an American traveler’s unexpected nightmare while vacationing in Africa. Inspired by actual events, the story chronicles Jesse Bloom, a charming, young man who wakes up after a night of hard partying and is arrested for a grisly murder. Suddenly thrust into the underbelly of Kenyan society, he is forced to contend with the kinds of people that would normally go unseen by an outsider (a tourist). The film honestly examines our perceptions of good and evil while delivering an enthralling and taut thriller.”

That is the synopsis of a Kenyan film that is expected to be the next big thing in Kenyan cinema. The film will be directed by Olumide Odebunmi who co-wrote Smokin’ Aces 2. The executive producer is Olatunde Osunsanmi who wrote The Fourth Kind starring Milla Jovovich.

Another producer will be Bernard Neto who has worked for American cable channels Showtime and the Discovery Channel. Benjamin Ochieng will star in the film. He has also starred in Tears of the Sun with Bruce Willis.

The film needs your help so that it can get to the production stage. The target is $40,000, it has only managed to get a quarter of that so far with 119 contributors. There’s only 15 days left to the Kickstarter deadline.

If you cannot contribute money, you can help by spreading the word through your social networks. Add Mzungu on Facebook and invite your friends to do so as well, make an announcements at your school, community group or church, or forward the email flyer to all your friends and family with your own personal message.

Check out more details about Mzungu and contribute to their Kickstarter project here.

Gospel rapper Juliani is a man who is hell-bent on getting his fans entertained through and through. As such, the influential rapper yesterday leaked photos from a video shoot for his Kitanda Yangu Four by Six single.

Kitanda Yangu Four by Six is the third single from his sophomore album “Pulpit Kwa Street” and going by these photo, the video is gonna be dope. The song itself gets you dancing thanks to its fusion of something closer to techno with hip hop. With lines like “shukuru Mungu kwa sauti inatoa nyoka pangoni otherwise utasikia nduru sauti ina toa C.I.D pangani” the song has continued to take an early lead in being a favorite for most guys who have listen to it.

Kenyan Rockstars Featured on Mashariki Mix

Kenyan rock music has grown over the years. In the two-year period when their was an influx of rock events, from the annual Battle of the Bands to the monthly Choices events, a lot of bands cropped up.

But way before that Murfy’s Flaw was already ruling airwaves. The band had already released their debut album, Makosa, in 2008. They followed it up with Hello Light three years later.

The alternative rock band is made up of lead singer Reema (who you might remember from Pop Idols), No. 9 (lead guitar and vocals), Punky Monkey (rhythm guitar), Jojo (keyboard and background vocals), Jozie (bass), Vicky (drums and background vocals), Kanvar (occassional drummer).

The band is currently preparing for Rock Therapy, a bi-monthly rock music event which has previously featured Parking Lot Grass. The event will take place on the 5th of October at Alliance Francaise from 6:00 p.m.

The group was recently featured on MNet’s Mashariki Mix. Check them out below.

The best of reggae heads to Machakos

Machakos biggest and hottest joint will this Sunday (7th October 2012) be hosting some of the greatest reggae deejays in what is to be Machakos hottest reggae event.

The event dubbed ‘Virtuous Sundays’ will be taking place at the Hornbill Club (HB), Machakos starting this Sunday, and every other Sunday after that. I have never understood why the biggest reggae shows always happen on Sunday nights. Most clubs in Nairobi have their reggae nights on Sundays, F2 being the most attended (and I’m not talking about Jam Sessions).

Virtuous Sundays will be bringing the best of Roots, Ragga and Dancehall, mixed for you by non other than Muzikal Sheriff, DJ Shiqx, DJ Patiz, Rankin’ Izzoh and the MC of the night, MC JNR C’Moh.

Entry is free and the show starts from 2PM till dawn.

Five types of bouncers you will find in Kenyan clubs

Have you ever been to a club and was totally disgusted and displeased by the way the bouncers treated or handled you? At the same time, don’t you just love how some bouncers treat the customers/revellers?

Well, here are some of the types of bouncers that you are likely to run into in the clubs.

1. The friendly bouncer
This is the type of bouncer that will say hi as he frisks you gently and not everywhere. When he is done, he will usher you in and even suggest for you a vacant sit when he sees that you are having a hard time finding one. These bouncers are almost extinct. If you are unruly and have to be kicked out, he is kind enough to do it gently. This guy deserves a tip… SERIOUSLY!

2. The touchy bouncer
These are the kinds of bouncers that leave you feeling like you have just been raped after they are done frisking you. There is no part of your body they won’t pass through. Sometimes, I even think some of them are gay and this job is just a legit excuse to enjoy themselves. Gives me the shivers.

3. Bossy Bouncers
They enjoy commanding revellers all over the club. ‘Usisimame hapa… songa huko… unakanyaga nani?…”. They go on and on all night long, acting like they own the club. You want to keep your distance from these ones. They will not be a second late to tell you how much a glass costs as soon as you break it.

4. Hopeless begging Bouncer
You do not want to be friendly to this guy. No, really. Just let him frisk you and walk away. No chit chat. If you are dumb enough to engage this guy in a conversation, it will end with you buying him a drink or even tipping him (for frisking you), something they like to call “ya macho!” Douche bag.

5. The Spartan bouncer
He gets his daily fix by pounding on weak guys. He really enjoys this because it is the only thing that makes him feel like a man. He worships his buffed up body and wants you to do too. This bouncer will cause a scene if you so much as touch him. Word of advice, slowly walk away. Totally not worth it, unless you and your pals have finally decided to teach this guy a lesson or two. I don’t support violence, but I’ll turn a blind eye on this one.

Man Wazimu Announces Another Album

Local reggae artiste Man Wazimu has announced another album. The release date has not been set but the reggae star has settled on the title, The Way. Makes you wonder if it is a rhyme thing. His debut album is called My Say.

Man Wazimu also exclusively told Ghafla! that the album will not have a single riddim, all of the tracks will be one drop. The Way will also have only two Bashment songs.

It was more more than a decade before Man Wazimu could release his debut album, but looks like he is set to release another one within a year of My Say, which came out earlier this year. We hope the album will give us another hit like Emergency Pills.

Rabbit Offered Recording Deal in Tanzania

Rabbit  AKA  Kaka Sungura music career seems to be getting successful day by day. Fresh from featuring in Octopizzo’s Bila Mic Remix, the Swahili Shakespeare artiste has been offered a recording deal by a Tanzanian recording label.

If Rabbit signs this deal it will be a major shot in the arm for his music career as he will get to work with most big wigs in Bongo like Professor Jay. Rabbit confirmed that officials from the Tanzanian-based stable will be in the country next to talk him into the deal. He however wasn’t ready to reveal which production house it was.

Rabbit also revealed to us via phone that he would be moving to Tanzania for a 6-months period if he gets to accept the deal. Asked whether he will sign, the tranquil artiste said that that will depend on what the officials will put on the table.

Be sure to keep it Ghafla! to find out whether Kaka Sungura will accept the deal.

Tattu’s Shinde Dropping a Solo Album

You surely remember the beautiful trio that made up an all-girl-group Tattu. They have been missing in action for the longest time now and so one of them, the lead singer, Shinde has decided to make a music comeback.

On the 26th of October the singer will be dropping her six-track album. Shinde boasted that the album is full of love and one can clearly feel the emotions from her jams. Speaking to HBR’s Amina Abdi, Shinde admitted that she did not write all the songs herself.

The yet-to-be-released album features artistes like Collo (who released his album last week). Fellow Tattu member Angie and Monique Kabuye will feature as song writers of the album.  She assured her fans that the album is an amazing blend of beautiful music that will give them a chance to see a completely different side of her.

The album artwork and title have not yet been finalized but she revealed she’s thinking of naming the album “Untold stories”.

DJ Kamjo and DJ Wesley clash

This Saturday (6th October 2012), two great deejays will be battling it out on the same venue, same night, same party and on different floors. This will be huge. It will also be kinda confusing considering that they will be playing different music at the same time, in this event dubbed ‘The Clash’.

One FM’s DJ Wesley will be holding it down on the lower floor at The Secrets Lounge, Playing nothing but African hits, all night long. I’m talking Azonto, Windeck, kapuka, Genge, Kwaito and the likes.

On the upper floor, DJ kamjo will be going H.A.M on International music hits, bringing international voices to Africa. I’m talking RnB, hip hop and dancehall.

I don’t know about you but I will definitely have a good time on both floors. This will be hot.

Advance tickets go for Sh. 200 and Sh. 300 at the gate.
