Ghafla! Is The 2nd Most Influential Media Company In Kenya, According To Klout.com

Klout defines itself as the ‘Standard For Influence.’

Klout basically takes all your social media profiles and measures the raw number fans you have, plus the level of interaction you have with them. Klout then mixes up all this data in their special algorithm and comes up with a Klout score, which is basically a summation of your influence in social media.

So today we decided to do a quick check of Ghafla’s Klout score. We looked at our score, and it stood at 79.

We’re not accustomed to this Klout thing, so we didn’t think much of it. Nevertheless, we decided to see where we rank against other “real” media companies in Kenya. Surprisingly, what we discovered is that we are the 2nd most influential news company online. After, of course, the 50 year old Nation Newspaper. Here is the entire top five:

1. Daily Nation – Klout Score: 84

2. Ghafla!Kenya – Klout Score: 79

BUSTED: Stalker Claims to be Brenda Wairimu’s Father

When you become famous, it’s only natural that people want to be associated with you or your success. Friends call you their BFFs, your parents say you’re their favourite kid, total strangers claim that you’re their daughter.

Okay, the last one rarely happens. But it did to one of these country’s hottest actresses.

During her Ghafla! visit, Mali/Shuga cast member Brenda Wairimu spoke about a lot of things but one of the most interesting story came when she was asked about stalking incidences.

She claimed that she was alerted by a guard about someone who kept showing up at her place to ask about her. She always missed the guy but one day he left a package. One of the things inside was a letter in which he used to explain that he was in fact her father. The letter also had a passport photo of the fictional dad, just so Brenda could decide for herself.

Today the actress backed up her story with a photo of the letter the guy sent to her. Click on the lead photo above to enlarge. Check it out below.

Hey Breda,

Well this Michael Kinyua W. I know you may find it hard to remember mi cos you were only 5 years old when I saw you last in “Thika.” I’ve been feeling to look 4 you everywhere and I only found about you when you gave an interview through the magazine in Nation newspaper. Thank God cos I am just imprest with what you’re doing. Keep on keeping on. Howz your mum & the rest of the family?

Brenda confirmed that her mother denied having ever met the man.

Then again, who wouldn’t want to be her ‘daddy’?

Pic of the day: Abbas from way back

This is one of the most consistent rapper. Been in the music industry for as long as I can remember and yes, Abbas is among the rappers that hold up the Kenyan music industry.

Here he hangs out, a couple of years back with one of the rappers from the Outsyderz music group, Ace. Check out the pose.

Mombasa-based Cannibal Bereaved

Mombasa-based rapper Ralph Sanda Masai aka Cannibal aka Shattah was recently bereaved. The hip hop rapper now a member of MMG (Makini Music Group) lost his grandfather and is said to have spent the whole of Sunday afternoon at the morgue.

It is however still not yet clear what the cause of the death might have been. Cannibal is touted as one of the finest performers in Kenyan hip-hop scene having worked with some of the big names in the showbiz.

We at Ghafla! wish to convey our sincere condolences to Cannibal and his family.

Uganda’s Navio Can’t Find A Kenyan Artiste To Do a Collabo With?

After performing over the weekend in Nairobi, Uganda’s hip hop giant, Navio is still in the country looking for a good artiste to do a collabo with. Navio is planning to do a Swahili version of his hit song One and Only.

The deep and strong voiced singer doesn’t seem to know who to select between Landlord hit maker, Mejja and Kaka Sungura AKA Rabbit. So far, Navio has settled for AY from Tanzania who will also be featured in the upcoming song.

It really is too close to call considering both the Kenyan artistes are top of their game as far as their music is concerned. On the other hand, Navio is keen on settling on top talent considering that he is a top dog in his home country and has also worked with the likes of Chameleone and Jackie Chandiru.

Who in your opinion should Navio pick? Watch One and Only below;

Sway to Rap Damu & AnitA’s Hot New Track

AnitA follows up her release of Gravity of Love by teaming up with other artistes to try and cement herself in to the music industry. And this time she hooked up with one of her old pals, Rap Damu.

Sway was her idea to break from her usual style of music to something for the parties, the dancers and the DJs. Rap Damu performs in his usual Ghipuka style on the house track as AnitA raises the bar by pushing her vocals on the chorus to urge the fans to sway to the music.

Rap Damu is a Chaguo La Teeniz-nominated rapper and producer who broke into the scene with his feel-good track, Good Life. The song was produced at Zenith Productions with the video being directed by Chris Sang. Check out AnitA and Rap Damu’s Sway below.

Juliani’s Connections documentary came out a while back. The footage of the release has just only come out, though.

The launch took place at the Dandora Stadium and the program featured a tour of various places in Dandora where Juliani grew up including Ukoo Flani headquarters, the home of hip hop. Studio Ang’s Bob Muchiri, Connections’ director, can be seen giving a speech on the doc.

Pulse Writer Smitta Smitten Tears Into Alai And Itumbi

I didn’t believe it when my colleagues brought the article to my attention until i read it and when i read it, i was left laughing like a mad hatter!

The article in question is “Bothersome Bloggers” and was done by Tony Mochama a.k.a Smitta Smitten on the 21st of September. He tore into Itumbi and Alai with so much venom and vitriol one couldn’t help but be both amused and outraged in equal measure.

Thing is though, after the initial chuckles died down, what i read alarmed me. It wasn’t shock at the fact that Pulse has gone in H.A.M on the blogoshpere in general and the two individuals in particular but rather that it became more and more personal.

adb5c7e925de1b08c7b602713e07074b_XL.jpg

Tony Mochama found the time during his rant to comment about Robert Alai’s aesthetic appeal or lack thereof. He actually begun his rant as follows: “In real life he is a cross-eyed chap with cacti-like tufts of hair, a broad forehead and pudgy cheek jowls that suggest the imbibition of too much porridge.” A paragraph into the article he described Alai thus, “…it is not the techo-babble but the social babbles that have made Alai a household name -in the same way one may get used to a housefly in a nyama choma joint.” Ouch!

But therein is where i find the first bone of contention, why would you turn this discourse into a personal attack at the man? And how could Pulse allow such drivel to go to print? I have immense respect for Tony Mochama but this is not his finest moment. If anything this has just become petty. He raises alot of valid points in the article but reading it to discern the points becomes like trying to mix volatile chemicals in Chem class with the incessant buzzing of a swarm of mosquitoes above your head- a near impossibility.

Mochama toasted to Alai’s humiliation earlier in the year when he was manhandled by security at iHub during the Nokia CEO’s (Stephen Elop) visit which was just crass! To laugh at a man when a man is down is in a word, pitiful. Irrespective of the circumstances that the humiliation occurred and whether or not you feel it justified, a better man empathizes.

Then Pulse sets it’s guns on Itembi. He describes Itumbi as “persistent as a mosquito”. but he doesn’t go in on him as much as he did to Alai.

One thing is clear though, this was a personal vendetta being settled in the most public of arenas where Tony Mochama was able to play judge, jury and executioner. Pulse must be privy to some information that i am not because in my humble opinion, letting this article go to press was a bad idea.

Goldie collaborates with East African rappers

Goldie seems to have so much more planned for East Africa than just Prezzo. She has been on her grind all the while in East Africa, meeting artistes and friends all over Kenyan,Uganda and Tanzania.

So far, Goldie has even managed to collaborate with some of the biggest East African artistes on some new songs. Songs that are guaranteed to be hits. African hits, that is.

Among the superstars that Goldie collaborated with during her short visit here are, Uganda’s Navio, Kenya’s Prezzo and recorded a track titled ‘Party Zone’ with Tanzania’s AY.

I’m surprised she still hasn’t collaborated with fellow housemate Kyle, from Uganda considering all the talk they had about making music together, but I guess there’s still ample time for all that.

Meanwhile, we wait for the new tracks from the East African artistes with Goldie.

Clearly Nonini is multi-talented, no doubts about that. Yaani this guys has decided it’s industry take over time. As he launched his Pole Pole video on Sunday, the godfather of genge also unveiled a new dance routine on the sidelines.

Christened Genge Shuffle, the new dance style is a composition of the inexhaustible dance group, Dashy Crew. “They rehearsed this Choreography 6months and damn didn’t they nail it!!!” said an elated Nonini. Prior to the video release, the rapper was looking for peeps who could shuffle to the beat of Pole Pole single “with a genge touch to it”.

Genge Shuffle was performed exclusively in the Pole Pole video and is expected to hit a club near you very soon if its current admiration is anything to go by. Check out the dance routine below;

It seems it has now become a new trend for Kenyan artistes to drop their new music projects on their birthday. It started with Madtraxx last month releasing his Na Na Na single and now genge rapper Nonini has followed suit.

Just five days fresh from releasing his Pole Pole video, the “raprenuer” has this morning released his latest single, Kwama Nao, exclusively on One FM during his One Breakfast Show. Wagenge Watrue,” posted Nonini on his Facebook page.

Taking on a sub-genre of the crunk beat, Nonini’s new single is set to hit the airwaves soon. Going by the success of his previous music, Kwama Nao, is projected to go down the same avenue.

The 15 women selected for the interviews will be involved in a two-day shoot on the 22nd and 23rd of October. If you are interested, contact the production on Kenyanwoman2012@gmail.com

Ogopa Deejays Migrating To Nakuru

After hiring a street urchin, Ghetto Radio goes after a house girl

It might be the search of talent to depths unknown, or just mere publicity stunts, either way, Ghetto Radio sure has unique criteria for selecting its radio presenters.

First came Mbusii, who was the Ghetto Radio ‘tea boy’ and somehow, Maji Maji (Ghetto Radio Station Manager) noticed some talent in this small young man and decided to give him a shot. We know about Mbusii’s story, but for Bonoko… well, that just remains to be a funny story (literally… the famous bonoko story about cops planting fake guns). All in all, these Maji Maji initiatives have proven to be working very well. The Mbusii and Bonoko show’s rating are very high and this might have incited Maji Maji to go on with his unique hiring decisions.

Now, in comes Kanana. This is the latest Ghetto Radio presenter who was until recently a house help in Kahawa West. So far, Kanana is doing pretty well in studio for someone who has no experience in radio presenting and already has die hard fans who call on the daily to declare their undying love for her.

So, now is the time to put a face to the name. Check her out above (click photo to enlarge).

The James Ingram Concert Officially Distorts Ticket Pricing In Kenya!

I saw the pictures and i couldn’t believe it!

If you don’t know what i’m talking about then please refer back to the title. Ciku Muiruri managed to get James Ingram to grace Kenya for a performance and V.I.P tickets were sold at a gobsmacking price of 10,000/- Kenya Shillings. That translates to a gurney bag full of Tanzanian and Ugandan shillings!
What shocked me the most is that from my immense experience of gracing V.I.P sections at concerts, i know for a fact that complimentary refreshments are nonexistent! That means that you pay 10,000/- sidi to gyrate and then take a seat, scream yourself hoarse then take a seat.
How do Kenyans agree to pay such jaw dropping prices for tickets yet we have home grown events and concerts that cost a fraction of what these James Ingram tickets cost yet are both well planned and exciting!
I submit to you that Muthoni Ndong’a’s Blankets& Wine is one such event that you should come out for on Sunday. She has managed to get brilliant indeginous acts to perform to crowds that enjoy good music at a fraction of the cost.
But that is just a side note. To be real, James Ingram isn’t a hot item anymore. He last had a hit a couple of years ago and by a couple of years i mean somewhere in the region of twenty years ago.

rick-ross-video-lagos.jpg
What would happen if we brought say Rick Ross to Kenya? Rick Ross is and has been the biggest name in HipHop for the past two years. Or what if we brought Rihanna? My colleague Jeff (whom i suspect attended the show) said that the show targeted a specific niche… they could pay for the concert at the going ticket prices but here is where i submitted Jay Z as a counter. Jay Z would be able to attract people well into their 30s say upto 38yrs of age.

WTT.jpg
Does that mean that a Jay Z concert would offer V.I.P tickets at 30,000/- or a more modest 20,000/-? Well, during the Watch The Throne concert which was headlined by not one but two megastars, nay two galaxies; Kanye and Jay Z, tickets didn’t translate to this obscene ticket pricing at the James Ingram concert in Nairobi. And even if they had, the tickets were to see more than just one performer.
It’s high time Kenyans insist on atleast being given complimentary drinks when they pay premium for V.I.P tickets.

Film Review: Why You Should Check Out Bourne Legacy

The Bourne series of films were no doubt a huge hit. It was a smart caper that made money in an emerging era where dumbing down meant you got a bigger audience.

A talky thriller with sparse but intense action sequences, it still somehow managed to become one of the biggest franchises of all time, the three films earning almost a billion at the box office.

When the studio ran out of the Robert Ludlum books that the films were adapted from, the studio still wanted more. The director dropped out. The star said he wasn’t going to be in the film if the director wasn’t involved.

But Paul Grengrass and Matt Damon’s departure didn’t deter the studio from making another one. The writer of all the three films was hired to take over and a bright new action star was added to the project, which featured an all new cast including Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz.

Bourne fans might like the opening scene. And you need to have watched the other films to get the context of some stories, or at least the moment in time the film is at.

For those who thought the previous Bournes needed more action, might be a little disappointed by this one. But if your taste allowed you to like–let alone understand–the other Bournes, you won’t have much of a problem here.

One thing that might be missing from this film is the sense of urgency that was clear in Greengrass’ instalments, which might have been created by the cinematographer. The camera is steadier, totally eliminating Greengrass’ signature.

The film’s tagline is “there was never just one.” It introduces us to another Treadstone/Blackbriar operative just as the CIA agencies are trying to clean up the mess caused by the actions of Jason Bourne. Behavioural design is about to be exposed just as one of the operatives’ has run out of the meds that keep the operatives in tune.

Something that might be disputable is Gilroy’s comparison to Greengrass. It’s hard talking about Legacy without mentioning the previous director. His style which we have seen in films beyond Bourne has created the illusion that that is how all Bourne films should look like.

Despite the change, Bourne is still an enjoyable film to watch if you eliminate the shadow of its predecessors and manages to be enjoyable. It still has a lot of those “WHAT?!” scenes in all the hand-to-hand combat and action scenes.

I expected a little bit more from the parkour scenes, but that doesn’t mean it was disappointing. Besides, a one-shot scene where he rounds the house, climbing two floors effortlessly is as almost as cool as the follow-through camera scene in Supremacy.

What I loved about the action is how natural they were. They didn’t seem like they were saved up for the last scenes. This is probably because of how the film comes together anyway.

People who like slow-burn thrillers will enjoy and the action lovers will not be disappointed. Catch the film at Starflix Theatres daily at 12:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m., 6:15 p.m., 9:15 p.m.

Vag*na Monologues’ Founder Boosts Kaz to Continue Her Documentary Work

Kaz’s documentary series got a boost when Eve Ensler of the Vagina Monologues gave her $2,000 to continue her work.

“Now it so happened that a dear friend of mine Mumbi Kaigwa was hosting Eve Ensler, known by many as the author of the popular ‘Vagina Monologues’. Mumbi organized a meet for Eve, myself and a few other lovelies. What a meeting it was,” says Kaz.

“I showed Eve my work and she loved it. So much so that she gave me $2,000
To shoot the next batch of interviews. My word, I shed tears at that restaurant like a small child. I am so grateful that people around the world can appreciate the work I am doing,” she added.

Kaz is now looking for more women to interview. She has previously interviewed former TV host, Lorna Irungu, Tusker Project Fame winner, Valerie Kimani, humanitarian, Wamaitha Mwangi and Mumbi Kaigwa, a celebrated actress.

Kaz started working in the entertainment industry a teenager, hosting karaoke shows, performing with bands and acting on stage. She later participated in the African edition of Project Fame and hosted Citizen TV’s Tafrija show. She was also honored with a Most Promising Artiste award at the Kora Music Awards in 2005.

Avril And Alai Exchange Strong Words Over Jalang’o

You probably missed it well… Almost. We’re on it so you won’t so just sit back, relax and have a good read.

Remember the story about Jalang’o and Avril being an item that was first aired by Pulse? Well, on Sunday, Alai sought to make light of the whole affair but that rubbed avril the wrong way.

alai-pic.jpg
At first, it seemed asthough a tweef was iminent but all was not to be as Avril diplomatically turned down the pleas of her followers to fire missives at alai who interestingly enough (and rather uncharacteristically) went silent.
This is how the tweets were exchanged:
Robert Alai (@RobertAlai): Ka Jalang’o onyamo @AvrilKenya , ji wacho ni gi date. We uru Jalang’o onyem yawa.
Avril (@AvrilKenya): @RobertAlai I hope haujanitusi..didn’t understand a thing..
Robert Alai: Which normally functioning man does not get turned-on by @AvrilKenya ? Wacheni Jalang’o alone.
Avril: @RobertAlai I got the translation..u of all people insulting me..SMH..have a blessed Sunday..
Avril:  @RobertAlai think before you write stuff..hata kama ni ngumu, its important..
Avril: My whole being wants to respond to @RobertAlai insultin me in his native language..but that’s #NotTheKenyaIWant so I’ll just smile at u

IMAX Brings Back the Biggest Movie of All Time

The ultimate 3-D movie is coming to IMAX soon. Almost three years after the release of Avatar, IMAX is bringing it to its screens.

When Avatar was released in Kenya, there wasn’t a single IMAX screen and there was only one theatre capable of showing films in 3-D. And even that one was all the way in Mombasa at Nyali Cinemax.

Now Kenyans have the chance to enjoy Avatar the way it was intended to: on a huge screen, in three dimensions. The schedule for the showing of the special edition of the film has not been announced yet.

The James Cameron-directed film holds the number one spot of the highest grossing films of all time to this day. It dethroned another James Cameron film, Titanic, to take the top spot in 2010.

If you have doubts about the film’s visual magnificence, the Academy did not. All of Avatar’s three Oscars were from the visual categories: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Ghafla! Breaks Into The Top 10 Local Websites

According to Alexa.com, a website traffic monitoring tool, these are the top 10 locally created websites in Kenya:

 1. nation.co.ke: they’ve held this crown for the longest time. Understandable, as they are the oldest media house in Kenya.

2. standardmedia.co.ke: the leading Kenyan tabloid.

3. mocality.co.ke: looks like their hundred million shilling ad campain worked out in the end.

4. orange.co.ke: probably as a result of their internet subscribers being directed onto this page as they log in.

5. olx.co.ke: formerly dealfish.co.ke

6. safaricom.co.ke: see orange above.

7. capitalfm.co.ke: they consistently mention their website on their radio station.

8. rupu.co.ke: seems Kenyans have taken to this daily deals thing.

9. kenyan-post.com: fiction writers extraordinaire.

10. ghafla.co.ke: Kenya’s leading entertainment news website.

1FM’s Adelle Unveils a Rebranded Artiste

The Music Industry Will Witness
A Takeover On the
1st of October 2012
Which Will Be Led
by
ONE MAN

The day is here and the unveiling is complete.

Last week, clues to a mysterious figure who was billed to take over surfaced online (read here). It has now been revealed that this One Man is Ndegz.

Ndegz made his musical debut on Madtraxx’s Skamaress. His rebranding is being overseen by his manager, Adelle, 1FM radio presenter on the 1Drive show. Besides Madtraxx, Ndegz has previously worked with Eric Wainaina and Chizi.

Ndegz style was kind of hip hop-ish as can be seen on Skamaress, he has now switched to an RnB-like sound. Check out the Ndegz-produced track featuring Davic Kanaiya, Lift Me Up below.

Here is Why Kenya Beats Tanzania And Uganda at Entertainment!

I have always said that Kenya has a long way to go to catch up with Nigeria which is celebrating her Independence Day today! On that note i’m off work after this!

But when compared to her competitors in East Africa, Kenya is so far ahead of the pack that it is shameful to even mention a leading Ugandan or Tanzanian song or movie in the same breathe as a Kenyan one.
And i know alot of people will disagree with me on this but my dislike for Ugandan music aside, humour me for a short while and i shall prove to you that Kenya spanks nay, child abuses Uganda and Tanzania in almost every aspect.

the-hostel-tv-series-uganda.jpg

#1. TV series
Kenya trounces anything either Tanzania and Uganda have to offer. Uganda has tried to push the quality bar with Hostel but they are still a long way away from achieving the quality achieved by Kenyan shows such as Mali, Comedy Club, Changing times, Briefcase Inc and Changes.
Tanzania are virtual non-entities in this category. They have nothing to bring to the table.

Nairobi_Half_Life.jpg
#2. Movies
Kenyans can make stellar movies when push comes to shove and they have all the resources. Think not? Watch Tosh Gitonga’s “Nairobi Half Life” and you will be blown away… If that doesn’t do the job then my dear critic all i have to say to you is “The Oscars!”
Well, that and you have poor taste. Nairobi Half life could very soon be in contention for an Oscar. I hate to admit it but it is better than anything i have seen from Nigeria.
Uganda’s and Tanzania’s movie industry are still trying to pick their mouths of the floor. Kenyans have this particular one on lock!

#3. Music
Now we are onto the controversial one. Again, i must admit my apathy towards Ugandan music and i find Tanzanians however, on average are better at putting pen to paper and coming up with lyrics. And they all have honeyed voices.
With that said, we must first agree that album sales does not translate from good music; simply good marketing engines to push your product. In this regard, Uganda and Tanzania trounce Kenya. Kenyan artistes do not understand their audience and the economics behind marketing to them.
However, Kenyans are far more creative and far more entertaining than their counterparts and when it comes to musical refinement, Kenyans are unchallenged. Think not? B.E.T thinks so and so does M.O.B.O and BEFFTA so who are you again? Thought not! Hush up and let me finish. Camp Mulla, Sauti Sol, Just A Band, Eric Wainaina, Joseph Hellon (no trolling here) are some of Kenya’s musical luminaries who cannot be touched by their East African contemporaries.
And our deejays? What can we say about DJ Joe Mfalme or Creme De La Creme that Channel O’s Bassment hasn’t? How about Kaytrixx? What about DJ Protege, DJ Hypnotic and DJ Hassan? Nuff sed!

945a0a7a8f2da41b3a456e91531d5e81_XL.jpg

And the creativity on the underground? Dora, Crew Teflon, Annette Kawira, Ojiji are just illustrations of the fact that the guys bubbling under are talented.
Over to you +255 and +256, let’s see a reply to everything the +254 has to offer. Oh yeah, the fact that EVERY major artist is snubbing Kenya for Uganda and Tanzania is a good start. Funny how the most creative country in East Africa is only attracting has-beens and artists who are only recognizable to old foggies.
Your Uncle Chim Tuna has spoken.

Here is Why Eric Omondi is The Best Comedian in Kenya

After staging a very successful show in Nairobi back in May, organizers of Africa’s biggest comedy show, A Nite of a Thousand Laughs, will be taking the show to Naira-land. Among the comedians to perform during the event will be Kenya’s rib-tickling Eric Omondi.

The petite stand-up comedian will be the only Kenyan during the event and he didn’t hide his displeasure. “I am so disappointed that out of all the artistes who will be performing in Nigeria, I will be the only Kenyan,” Erick told the Standard.

Eric Omondi argued that Kenya tops in Africa when it comes to new talent comedians and urged other Kenyan actors to strive to represent the country at continental platforms not just within the borders.
Slated for tonight at the Muson Center, the show will feature some of Africa’s best humorists like Uganda’s Patrick ‘Salvador’ Idringi. Top Nigerian musicians like Iyanya, Brymo and Omawumi are also expected to grace the show.
