Classic 105, KISS 100 and co. Make Over 800 Million A Year

A while back, Aly-Khan Satchu, a leading financial analyst in Kenya, interviewed Patrick Quarcoo and William Pike, the founders of Radio Africa(the company that owns KISS 100, Classic FM, East FM, X FM, and others) during the renowned Mindspeak conference.

During that interview, they revealed a lot of details that were unknown to most people, including their anticipated revenues for the 2009-2010 financial year. Patrick Quarcoo said:

“So how do we do? This is not something I’m supposed to show you, but that’s how we’ve been doing. We’ve been growing very nicely. We’re looking to do about 600-800 million this year. Why did we get into the radio business in this country?… We are in the business for the money, OK? Let no one fool you.”

That interview being done a while back, means that we can now safely assume that they have crossed the 800million shilling revenue threshold. PQ attributed much of their success to having A-list presenters on their team, like Shaffie Weru, Caroline Mutoko and Maina Kageni.

Another Funny Eye Witness Emerges (video)

After witnessing the emergence of Bonoko and most recently Jose (of the “Ni kama ndrama Ni kama Vindeo” fame) yet another eye witness may well just be on his way into Truth Meter and Bulls Eye, thanks to his utterances.

Last week, a 48 year old bridge in Nyeri county caved in after it could not stand the weight of a lorry due to its age cutting links between two towns. As usual, there are always the first guys at the scene of the accident and one of them was Joseph Mwangi. Approached by the NTV journalist, Mwangi recounted the whole incident and even going into detail of how the bridge collapsed and making the sounds it produced.

“… io daraja ilianza kukatika nikaanza kuskia mlio kama kwe kwo kwa ka kaa! Kwanza apo nikaona uyo dereva akiwa pekee yake ameanza kutiririka uko chini kwa mto na io lorry imeanza kuanguka ikaanguka kwanza”, related Mwangi.

Politicians Make It Rain But Still Get Booed At Miss University Beauty Pageant!

There is a time and a place for everything. And when you are at a beauty pageant with sloshed university students that is definitely not the time to start political bragging and flossing.

And the students and revellers at Carnivore put these shameless politicians by booing them off-stage! I can actually relate with the animosity they must have felt towards the politicians who interrupted their drinking and revelry to start politicking.

According to Stevens Muendo who preferred to concentrate on the fact that the politicians led by Kamlesh Pattni made it rain on the winner, the whole sad affair begun after Kamlesh announced that he had a little surprise for the winner then he gave her a stack of cash. not to be outdone, Jacob Dundos who is vying for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat started on a discourse about how he had paid for the venue only for the revellers to boo them both. Good stuff!

speaking of politics, have you seen the set for tonights presidential debate? Well, check out the photos here!

Talking To The Drums will be hosted by Electrafrique’s DJ Cortega and Electrique DJs & The Beat Parade Band.

Black Motion is a South African group ranked as the No. 1 live performance artistes in South Africa. They are a duo formed by two childhood friends, Robert a.k.a DJ Murder and Thabo a.k.a Smol.

Their breakthrough came when they joined Spirit Motion where they produced the hit single, Banane Mavoko. The song was so big that Legendary South African Producer DJ Oskido licensed the song for his compilation CD, Oskido’s 10th Commandment.

The success of the single saw the group establish a relationship with UK-based label, Tribe Records who came along and signed the song for international digital release. Black Motion have other singles featured on Mmthi’s Essential Mix 6 – Bhana Shilolo featuring Zulu and Quantized Mix 6 – Set Me Free featuring Xoli.

NULU Records followed suit by signing Mumi Wango featuring Soulflow, which saw the song being remixed by the likes of Manoo and Antonello Coghe & Rancido. Ocha Records Mzansi thought they won’t be left behind and they signed one of the biggest songs of 2011 Set Me Free featuring Xoli. This package contained the heavyweights, Master Kev & Tony Loreto, Bang the Drum (Jihad Mahumed), Ezel, DJ Qness and Black People.

The group signed a licensing deal with Kalawa Jazzme Records in 2011, which saw them releasing their first double CD album titled Talking to the Drums. This comprises of hit songs like Father to be featuring Dr. Malinga; Kakaramba featuring Celimpilo, Dimensions featuring Lando and many more.

2011 and 2012 was so big for the duo as they headlined concerts all over the world in places like Miami, Canada, United Kingdom etc. Their sound brought upon the new revolution where almost every single song that got released from there on was titled Black Motion. Despite being one of Africa’s most sought after performers worldwide, the Black Motion duo remains humble and grounded, choosing to live simple lives and give back to the community around them.

Citizen vs NTV vs KTN vs K24. What is your favourite station? (POLL)

Now I know that there is research out there that categorically states which station is the best, but this research keeps changing because the studies are commissioned by the media houses themselves!

So let’s do an open and impartial poll. Which station is the favourite of the Ghafla! readers?

CITIZEN TV

Known for catering to the ‘mashinani’ audience mostly, this station revolutionized the local content scene with series like Inspekta Mwala, Tahidi High and Papa Shirandula. But do Ghafla! peeps feel such?

KTN

With a fully 3D newsroom, they are ahead in terms of technology. Their investigative reporters, led by John Allan Namu and Mohammed Ali risk their lives for their stories, driving large viewership for their documentaries.

NTV

This is by far the largest media house in Kenya in terms of revenue. With more than 9 billion shillings in annual revenues, Nation Media Group has all the money to play with in terms of research and development.

K24

This station once had the leading talk show in Kenya: Capital Talk, hosted by Jeff Koinange. He recently left the station, leading some to question how K24 would hold up, but they have been on a hiring spree recently, poaching talent like Tom Mboya, Belinda Obura, Lulu Hassan and others from their rival stations.

So who do you think is on top?

How Size 8 Made 7 Million In 6 months

For those who didn’t read the Buzz yesterday, Size 8 gave them a candid interview where she talked about how far she has come in the three years she’s been in showbiz. She said that she is now a millionaire, and even she doesn’t yet believe how it has happened. “It’s God’s work and hard work put together,” she said.

Size 8 last year had a Safaricom Live contract, hosted the Sakata dance show, had several TV commercials, acted in ‘Mheshimiwa’ TV series and her music was blazing the airwaves. On all that, she replied:

“That was all planned by the way. I wanted to be the first Kenyan musician to be on TV the same time the most. You switch on your TV and find a ‘Bonyeza Ushinde’ advert I have done, then my music plays in a music show, then see me acting and host a show on different occasions, and it was lovely seeing that work very well.”

Then John Muchiri asked her, “how much money did you make last year?”

Size 8 told him: “If I’m to calculate for six months only up to December, I made about Sh7 million.”

What have you done with that kind of money?

Size 8: “Investments here and there, 10 percent as tithe, and I’m about to start a children’s home with a friend Eddy Gicheru Oketch, in Nyanza.”

Remember Size 8 also bought a sleek sportscar with some of the money late last year.

On how exactly she started making that sort of money, Size 8 said the secret was:

“When I made a decision to raise my performance fee. I used to charge very little cash to perform but when I realised how powerful I was as a musician, I decided to take advantage of that.”

However, despite all this, Size 8 is not the richest female celebrity in Kenya. Find out who that is by clicking here.

Coast Celebs Rush To Endorse Politicians

Maybe it’s just me but it seems like there is a rush by artists to endorse their preferred candidates and i made a list of Kenya’s top artists and whom they have sought to endorse and Coastal celebs it seems are not to be left behind.

A couple of them stepped on last week to support their candidate of choice in the Mombasa gubernatorial race… That’s just a fancy way of saying that they are taking sides in the governor race in Mombasa. according to Stevens Muendo of the Monday Blues, 30 artistes came out to support Suleiman Shahbal who is running on a Wiper ticket.

The Coastal celebrities included Beyonce who recently escaped death when her house burnt down. Read about that here.

And one of the promises Suleiman Shahbal has made is to support showbiz in Mombasa and that was what Hassan Faisal sighted as his reason to endorse Shahbal when he refuted claims that they had been compromised.

Tanzania’s Diamond was also in attendance at the event that saw Shabal get the various artists’ endorsement.

Caroline Mutoko’s Rules Of Engagement To Fight Hate Speech On Facebook

Hate is not welcome on Caroline’s page. These are the rules of engagement on her page going forward into the elections. She said:

“Since it’s not the job of Ndemo, Kibunja and CCK to police hate, it’s yours and mine, here’s what you need to know starting now:

1. You want to campaign for your chosen candidate or party – go to THEIR FB page. Don’t come here. You’re not welcome.

2. You want to abuse someone or start spreading your small minded sentiments on tribe and other rubbish – go to the FB pages that support that crap – there are many.
Don’t come here – you’re not welcome.

3. If you feel the need to use your time to spread small-minded hate & spew tribal slurs and get abusive (bad grammer and spellings not withstanding) go elsewhere. You are not welcome here.

I don’t have another country to call home. If you can’t talk, write and act in a manner that safeguards this nation – you are not welcome here.

Hate is not welcome here.”

Well and good. Remember the RIP Caroline Mutoko Facebook page that was created the other day? Wonder what those guys think about all this.

Top Gospel Singer Explains Why Ladies Get Dumped in Large Numbers

It now turns out that Gospel singer Papa Muyelele of the hit single ‘Omwami” is not only a good singer but also “Mr. Fix It” in relationship issues. Check out;

This goes to all the ladies out there. Have you ever taken time to think of the reasons why that guy dumped you? Why he doesn’t like you? Why that guy dimmed his love for you? Why your guy changed all over a sudden? Why guys don’t fall for you? Why you are remaining single year to year?

The 12 REASONS are:

1. YOU LIE TOO MUCH – Guys aren’t stupid. They can tell when they’re being lied too. Don’t try to hide who you are because you think a guy won’t like the real you. You can’t fool somebody forever and once the truth comes out he’ll never trust you again. So be yourself to some guys who date you.

2. YOU DON’T APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS HE DOES FOR YOU – Some guys are horrible with expressing their feelings, but they try to in their own little ways.

Sometimes it’s something small like picking up a cupcake because they know you’ll like it. Lots of times an act like this goes unnoticed, If a guy is trying to show you he cares and you don’t see it he’ll think you don’t care or you don’t love him. Appreciate his efforts please.

3. YOU TEXT & MAKE CALLS TOO MUCH – Guys like to feel important. If you’re on your phone the whole time during dinner they’ll feel like you don’t care about them. The solution is to turn your phone off so you can give all your attention to him.

Seriously, nothing is so important to having to always be texting. Think about it and stop it.

NOTE: Some of these reasons are vice-versa. Some of the guys out there also do this. They should also borrow a leaf from these tips.

4. YOU’RE A PARTY ANIMAL – Guys like to have fun, but they also like to chill out. If you’re going out to bars and clubbing like thrice a week, soon your guy will get tired of it. First of all it’s not developmental at all and it’s wastage of time if overdone. So a guy will hate and dump you for that. If you want to be in a committed relationship you have to give up the crazy nights out. I am not saying your never party, but do it once in a while.

5. SHOWING THAT YOU KNOW EVERYTHING – Women are smart; we all know this, but some women think they know everything.

Nobody likes a know-it-all. When you’re constantly trying to prove to a guy that he’s wrong it’ll eat away at him.

Even if you know you’re right about something let it slide. It’s okay to let someone else have the glory.

6. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO EAT – Here’s a fact about this world: guys like to eat food. If you don’t eat while he is, you’ll make them feel awkward.

You don’t need to eat a cheeseburger and fries every day, but do more than have a side salad for dinner.

7. YOU ARE NOT INDEPENDENT ENOUGH – If whenever life gets rough you run to your parents for help, it’ll turn a guy off.

It’s good to have a support system, but if you’re calling your mom because you broke a nail, because your guy never paid all the necessary bills, if he left insufficient money for launch at home, if he came back late, If he never ate the food you cooked… it shows you won’t be able to handle the bigger problems when they come.

8. YOU DON’T WORK BUT YOU WANT TO SPEND LIKE A BILLIONIARE – If you want to shop all day long, you better have your own money to do it. Guys don’t like having to sweat all day.

Many ladies sometimes like competing, they like buying things that they won’t use simply because they don’t suit their standards. They like to poses it and full up their wardrobe simply because she saw her closest female friend with it.

Guys dislike this; they will dump you because of being a big spender.

9. YOU NEED TO CHANGE HIM – Guys like who they are. They are how they are for a reason, basically for a living. If he’s a horrible dresser you can buy him a new shirt, but don’t force anything on him. If he likes wearing pair of Jeans, T-shirts and sneaks, that is his style… Don’t try to change him to start putting on suits that he is not used to. Just love him the way he is. If you aren’t happy with who he is, find somebody else that makes you happy. But remember some on can be so stylish but when he has no true love for you at heart.

10. YOU NEVER DECIDE WHERE TO EAT DINNER FROM – If you’re going out to dinner just make a choice and stick with it. Guys don’t like making a decision and then changing it and then changing it again. If you want to go to more than one place, there’s always next weekend.

11. YOU ACT LIKE THE WORLD IS ENDING – There’s nothing worse for a guy than when a girl acts like the world is ending because her favorite salad dressing was out of stock when she went grocery shopping. Even if it means a lot to you try to let it go. Guys just blow things off and hope you will to.

12. BEING SO FRIENDLY TO HIS FRIENDS – Guys don’t make new friends often.

The friends they have are for life. When you try to step in between a guy and his buddies all you’re doing is creating a barrier between the two of you. A guy may dump you because of your being so close to his friends. He will feel insecure; he will get jealous and starts losing the trust hence leading to dumping you and even hating his friends for life.

Don’t be into his friends so much; don’t communicate with them behind his back unless he is okay with it. Talk to them mostly when he is around with you.

Another Hot Track From Underdawg Productions

Producer Babz OnThe Track is back with a sizzling hot track. This time creating a masterpiece for Pace AKA Pace Ian Gituku, the song is dubbed “Party Pale”.

Inspired by the DJs’ chants of “put your hands up in the air” in the clubs, Pace thought he could write a danceable song repeating those words, and that’s how “Party Pale” was born. The track revolves around the concept of going to a party where a man goes about calling his friends including hot girls to go for the party. He tells he’s friends not to worry about what they are wearing because it’s going down that night.

From this song, you’ll notice that Pace has a unique rapping style which is melodious and has recorded a number of tracks too. Having started music at a very early stage in life by playing the grand piano at primary school and developed his musical career while in high school where he started recording music, Pace is also the C.E.O. of Pace Music Entertainment (P.M.E.).

K24 Plotting Another Raid On Citizen And KTN

Last week, K24 raided the Citizen newsroom of bigwigs such as Belinda Obura and Tom Mboya, then also took away Lulu Hassan and others from KTN. Many theories were floated as to why they have managed to get such massive fire power in such a short time. What we have learnt now is that they are planning another sensational raid, aiming for more top talent from these two media houses. Whether they will accept is another matter.

Will these media wars ever end? Leave your interesting or creative responses in the comment section below:

Maina Kageni gets real with ‘mpango wa Kando’ fanatics

Come on, don’t even think about denying it! If you insist, you might just end up like the lady we reported about two days ago (read about her here).

I know what you’re thinking, “why is this guy condemning me? What if I love Mpango wa Kando?” Well, hold on. No one is after your nuts. Atleast not yet. All we want to know is, are you using protection?

Maina Kageni shares the same sentiments. Here is a small message he shared some few minutes ago.

“Ladies and gentlemen, let us be honest – there are people out there who have more than one sexual partner and are not even considering using condoms.

These things are happening in society today folks – hiding behind veils and being shy about this doesn’t help. Yes, and you probably know some of them …are they aware of the risks? Be wise – wrap it up before you smack it up!”

Step Aside Vitz, Here’s The World’s Smallest Car (Photos)

Vitz owners can now have a break with the emergence of Peel P50. Yes, small cars are nice in a crowded city for easy manoeuvering and where parking spaces are tight, but just how small is too small?

The Peel P50 is a three-wheeled micro-car and currently holds the record for the smallest automobile to go into production. It has no reverse gear, but a handle at the rear allows the very lightweight car to be physically manoeuvred when required.

Check out the video below Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear driving the Peel P50., the world’s smallest production car to work and even takes it into the lift in this hilarious clip from BBC’s Top Gear.

Size 8 Turns Down Kshs. 2 Million From Politician

This election season, some artistes will make serious amounts of cash fronting political candidates.

One of them could have been Size 8 had she not turned down an offer from an unnamed top politician. The singer told the Standard’s tabloid pullout, Pulse, “The plan was for me to attend ten political shows across the country during which I would be paid Sh200,000 each. The total amount would come to Kshs. 2 million, an awesome amount.”

And then she explained why she refused the offer, “I had been watching clips from the 2007 post-election violence with chilling pictures of bloodshed. I recalled how Kenya burned down, stirred by political instigations. I hated imagining I would support a politician at the backdrop of all these. I said ‘no’ to the offer and decided to rally the youth towards a peace call.”

Size 8 is one of the artistes from Wananchi Wasanii who have chosen not align themselves with any politicians and instead go around the country interacting with fans. Some artistes have already done tracks for politicians including Abbas and Bamboo’s for TNA (check it out here), while others have performed during their rallies like Jaguar, Mejja and Kidis among others.

HILARIOUS! Drunkards go crazy at the Karura Forest. Shappaman and Zain Armstrong are among them (video)

At first, when I read the headline of the video on YouTube, I thought I was about to see a group of helplessly drunk men doing despicable things in the karura Forest.

Turns out that it’s just a group of young guys who decided to go camping through the night in the forest but yes, they were drunk out of their minds.

What makes this video even more interesting is the fact that Zain Armstrong and Camp Mulla’s Shappaman is among them. Infact, he is the cameraman, recording every single foolish act his friends pull.

Some of the scenes in the video are really hilarious, especially the part a dude kicks open a door, turned into a gif while M.I.A’s ‘Paper Planes’ plays in the background.

Top gospel artist to launch his book

As the quest to conquer the music industry with the gospel becomes a huge success, so does the urge to go further and conquer additional fields.

Gospel singer Paul Mwai is very much celebrated across the country and even in the Diaspora. Actually, he receives more love in the UK than he does in his own country. He is that huge, probably because he has a story to tell, and he tells it well through his songs which boast of really humble lyrics by the way.

Paul Mwai is now ready to spread his gospel word through out the world by the launch of his book.

The book, ‘WORSHIP, MY LIFESTYLE’ is set to be launched immediately he returns to the country as he is now back in the UK for another tour. This is actually the second time he is touring the UK, due to public demand.

As we wait for the launch of the book, here is an excerpt from the synopsis of the book.

“…Sadly, worship has been taken to mean the Sunday morning ritual that we all engage in yet true worship is a fulltime call of obedience. It is the response from the created to the creator that flows out of a very close relationship. God is looking for a church that will seek true intimacy with Him. All the other ministries will come to an end once Christ comes for His bride, but worship will never end; it is a taste of eternity…”

Funny: OJ Meets OJ (video)

The ever sidesplitting Comedy Club is back again. This time, the crew decided to enact an episode of Tahidi High and who else to mimic other than the infamous OJ (Oscar Ojiambo)?

With Marvin of Comedy Club playing OJ and Dennis Mugo (the real OJ) playing as himself, the two bump into each other and the shock is evident on their faces and that’s when a heated argument ensues. With each one claiming he’s the real OJ, the two go ahead to outdo each other by comparing OJ’s signature features; floppy ears and extra light complexion.

Failing to determine who the real OJ is, the teacher emerges and declares that the two should call their parents and have a DNA test carried out. And that’s when all hell breaks loose…

After watching the clip below you’ll co-sign that these Comedy Club guys are getting awesome by the day.

Top Female Gospel Artist Affiliated With Jimmy Gait Assaulted In Studio!

Pulse were upto their old tricks again, giving us tidbits then leaving us hanging. They are guilty of giving their readers mental blue-soccerballs!

They gave us a tidbit about a drunk gospel artist attacking a female gospel artist and leaving her bruised. Uncle Chim Tuna must get to the bottom of this though! I must find out and post who that lad is and slap him the next time i meet him.

Anyway, the story is that Chuchu was savagely manhandled by her fellow artist in a recording studio. She was fortunately saved by the studio technicians and her friends. And for those of you who don’t remember Chuchu, she sang the chorus on Jimmy Gait’s song “Ole”:

{youtube}TAGJQq93Pw4{/youtube}

What a shame that such a diminutive beauty can be so brutally assaulted in a Christian environment where she must have felt safe! According to Pulse however, the drunk lad pinned her down violently and kept hurling insults and unprintables at her till he was pulled off.
