Colonel Moustapha And Huddah Monroe Finally Open Up About Their Relationship

Colonel Moustapha and Huddah Monroe were invited to the KTN studios to have a conversation about their relationship. It seems when Ghafla pick up on a story it soon becomes a matter of national import -but I toot my own horn and this isn’t about patting myself on my back. So back to the matter at hand.

Colonel Moustapha and Huddah were invited by Mwanaisha Chidzuga on her segment that airs right before the 7pm news on Saturdays and it was quite the show. I first caught wind of this when a Ghafla reader emailed me a link to an SDE story about the show. Actually, the link made out to denigrate the pair after the weekly entertainment rag SDE calls a sister publication ran a damaging story.

But I digress once more going on a tangent talking about weekly rag pieces that give old news (I think it should be scrapped in favour of SDE though). Anyway, the pair answered questions about themselves then proceeded to post pictures of them after the interview. Watch the interview below and then check the photo out:

Teacher Wanjiku, Listen Up To What Jalang’o Has To Say About Your Show (VIDEO)

On Sunday, I happened to meet one of the most popular comedians in the country, Jalang’o, behind the scenes of Tusker and I invited him over to our offices. I am actually humbled that he came through but sadly, I had left. He was instead hosted by Baba Ghafla. And what transpired was nothing short of inspirational especially for Teacher Wanjiku.

The man who has some experience in hosting shows and a world of experience at carrying shows on his own doesn’t have harsh words for teacher Wanjiku. If anything, he has words of encouragement for her. And this must be an oasis for the lass who has been at the heart of the hurricane kicked up by the lack-luster leap of faith that her show turned out to be.

And I think that it’s pretty swell that the lad Jalas took the time of day to give teacher Wanjiku some words of encouragement. Perhaps we just might see him get invited to the show for a skit. For now, watch as Jalas takes shots at all the couch coaches calling out the errors they saw on the show from the safety of twitter:

Rabbit Teams With South African Rapper HHP And Wangechi For An Awesome Track (VIDEO)

First off, let me say that the lad that produces for Rabbit and Wangechi -Kevin Provoke- is one of the finest producers around. The lad whom I have called on several occasions for what I perceive to be managerial mistakes is however infallible when it comes to production. He is one of the people who creates instrumentals that make you believe with every fibre of your being that their is talent -not raw but mature talent in the Kenyan entertainment scene.

Now right from that introduction, you can tell that the instrumentals are too many levels of awesome. And with the right instrumentals, almost anyone can rap. But this isn’t just about anyone on the track. The best from South Africa meets the best from Kenya and his protoge.

HHP starts us off rapping in his Motswako style. And given that he is rated as one of the best rappers in Africa, need I say more? Then from HHP, we move on to Rabbit rapping in Swahili so whoever tells you that Swahili will never be accepted in Africa is lying to you. It isn’t about the language, it’s all about whether or not the music is quality.

Wangechi then takes us on her part of the journey and she does so in English and a little bit of Swahili. And she holds her own even when surrounded with veterans. That is no small feat for the 19 year old. And now I can say that had this track come out earlier, both Kaka Sungura and Wangechi would have featured on my top 5 rapper list. But we all now how that goes. Check out the awesome track below:

Leading Nairobi Hotel Ordered to Pay to Play Music

From now henceforth, Nairobi Pacific Hotel, a 3-star hotel, will have to part with cash for public sound recordings and audio-visual works.

In a landmark ruling by Hon. Gichobi at the Milimani Law Courts, Kenya Association of Music Producers and Performers Rights Society of Kenya (KAMP-PRISK) got an important victory over Nairobi Pacific Hotel Ltd.

The hotel had filed an injunction to restrain KAMP-PRISK from collecting fees for the Communication to the Public License, a joint license issued by the two organisations to entities that communicate to the public sound recordings and audio-visual works.

Could We Say He is First Kenyan Artiste To Go To Space?

He was nicknamed “The King of Probation” and yes many thought he wouldn’t probably go a long way, as far as music is concerned. But Festus Kamau Popularly known as Fess is  here to stay!, and to substantiate that, the singer who’s known for his high vocals (Falsetto) didn’t just “gallilounge” (Lazy) around after eviction from the Tusker Project Fame season 6.

After being signed by one of the best recording and production studio in Africa; Ennovatormusic, Fess went ahead and came up with a hot upbeat track featuring Xtatic who’s also one of the top Femcee in the country.

Guaranteed this song is going to be a major hit, and Yes! Fess is “On Top of The World”

#TOPOFTHEWORLD is an edgy pop single that is set to catapult Fess to the top! You can download it from Download the track for Free on Waabeh or check it out here:

Curvaceous Grace Msalame on a Day out with Her Twin Daughters (PHOTO)

With an action-packed weekend, most celebs were out and about making appearances at the which-is-which event going down in the capital. If they were not at BBQ Live, they were at Safaricom International Jazz Festival or Tusker Twende Kazi official launch.

To put an end to a stressful week, gracious Kiss TV host, Grace Msalame, was spotted with her twin daughters at the fabulous family-friendly and fun-packed Safaricom International Jazz Festival: A Journey of a Thousand Miles which saw  local and international artistes come together in the Kenya’s largest Jazz extravaganza.

Grace’s little angels had the fun of their lives as they ran about in excitement as their mum relaxed to enjoy the soothing sounds of Jazz music.

Vera Sidika Admits To Bleaching (EVIDENCE)

Bleaching is a very testy topic. We all know someone who participates in the practice but we do not mention them in public because of the stigma associated with the practice. Studies have proven just how toxic the skin bleaching agents can be to our bodies but sadly, some women still persist on bleaching. Personally, I think that “to each his own” and aslong as it tickles someone’s fancy, let them get their rocks off.

However, there is still the small aspect about respecting one’s body. And what price is too steep a price to pay for beauty? I guess we’ll leave that to the moralists and philosophers.
Vera bleaches and has admitted as much. personally, I am glad she had the brass to admit to bleaching. but I wonder if she was influenced by the people in Nigeria given how rampant the practice is in West Africa. Check out her admission below:

Tussle Over ‘Hivo Ndio Kunaendanga’ Hit Regenerated. Artists Now Fighting Over the Song’s Rights

There’s always something about collabos that go on to become a hit. Either the artists involved scrimmage over the royalties of the song or a power struggle over who has rights over the song. Well, that’s the drama surrounding the club-banger, ‘Ivo Ndio Kunanendanga’.

Last week, rapper Majirani declared that the hit-song was his idea and that he even wrote the lyrics for Kenrazy and V-Sita. However, Visita has vowed not to take this lying down and responded to Majirani’s utterances two days later.

V-Sita

A miffed V-Sita wrote;

“IF IT’S TRUE THAT MAJIRANI WROTE ME EVEN ONE WORD FOR MY VERSE IN ‘HIVO NDIO KUNAENDAGA’, MAN..PSSS….LETS WAIT FOR HIS NEXT SINGLE…..”

When reached for a comment, Majirani said, “In one of Shakespeare’s work, he writes hanging and wiving goes by destiny. We all go through a predetermined path of fate and so far so good for me. To put pacify this matter, I want to state that;
When I went to Grandpa Records, I had the song hivyo ndio kunaendaga in mind. I had MY 3 VERSES. I paid for the song to be recordes as I met with V-Sita the producer and we went through what i had in mind. As an experienced producer he helped with the necessary changes and we had Kenrazy in the song. Everyone DID their part individually. I have respect for both artists and whoever came up with that vybe ati niliandikia kina Razy na V-Sita, let please Majirani be. #TeamMajirani «« as Majirani’s response. And not as I’d stated that he’ll consult his manager first.”

“Muziki Ni Dawa” Ringtone’s New Video (Watch It Here)

Ringtone’s new video “Muziki Ni Dawa” is back up in YouTube after it was pulled down for alleged ‘pornographic’ content. There is hardly any porn content in this video so it makes one wonder why it was pulled down in the first place.

ringtone-apoko.jpg

Ringtone claims sabotage by his enemies. In his defense when it emerged that the video had been taken down, Ringtone accused the people of using the report button to have the video taken down on grounds of explicit content.

YouTube issued an apology to Ringtone then put the video back up.

Is someone out to derail Ringtone’s career?

You can watch the video below

Photos: Did You Know These Celebs ALL Come from One Family?

There’s no denying that talent runs deep in some of Kenya’s showbiz most famous family dynasties. From the Kaggia’s and the Longombas’, to the Rabar’s (Homeboyz owners) and the Mwatia’s (Daddy Owen, Rufftone, Fidel), it seems some of the most beloved singers and actors often produce stars of their own.

By and large, when one kid in a family gets into showbiz, the others are often soon to follow. I think there are many reasons for this, but that which I strongly believe is that once one is famous, it can naturally open doors for their siblings that would have otherwise remained shut. I also think that it makes directors’ work easier; instead of having to go through rigorous auditions they can just ask an actor/TV personality to call their bro or sis.

Rosy with her 3 lovely daughters, from the oldest, Hope, Joy and Imani

That could be the case for this family who I bet you didn’t even know were related. Don’t feel bad…

TV is clearly is the blood of the Ohon family. In fact 4 out of the 5 members of the cute family are on TV;

Father: Donald Ohon is a professional actor in various TV commercials. But I’m sure most of you would remember him from the ‘Faulu Kenya’ TVC as Musa Faulu.

Mother: Rosy Ohon is Gospel Music performing and recording artist who has won the hearts of many with her music

Daughter: Joy Maranatha plays “Joy” in award-winning Citizen TV show, Machachari.

Daughter: Imani Hadassah, the last born is the charming baby girl in the Oreo cookie TVC.

What a talented family!

By creating a set of “7D” effects that are synchronized to the film production, the 7D Theater adds another layer of immersive fun for the audience.

The 7D cinema combines 3D, physical and environmental effects for an ultimate theatre experience. The seats at the theatre are 6 Degree of Freedom or DOF, which allows up and down, front and back, left and right movement in sync with the onscreen activity.

The experience also includes a wide variety of environmental effects including, smoke, fog, thunder, storm, wind, rain, snow, fragrance and more, depending upon the film’s storyline.

With all the quick movements involved, safety is a big issue. The theatre provides state of the art safety features. They include; built in safety control for emergency stop due to low pressure or heated hydraulic oil.

There are also emergency stop buttons in three locations, a hydraulically operated safety bar, mechanical safety stoppers for all four axes and an automatic sink at controlled rate to stable position in the event of power failure.

Watch Out Inspekta Mwala, Here Comes ‘Afande’

From the producers of ‘Hekaya Za Likobe’ comes a sizzling police TV Drama series, called ‘Afande’.

This is a real police show where cast members dress, behave and talk like the typical Kenyan police.

The Writer/Director/Producer of the show Jirongo Luyali was quick to dispel any assumptions that the show was An Inspekta Mwala knock-off “I know many people will say that I have photocopied Citizen TV’s ‘Inspekta Mwala’, but I assure the audience that ‘Afande’ is totally different from ‘Mwala’.

He then goes on to add “We have fresh and talented cast members and every episode of our show will be bringing out something new. We will not be predictable and will give the viewer a reason to follow our series. We are also going to showcase the real Kenyan police. Talk of arrogance, ignorance, humor and laughter; it is all in ‘Afande’.

“The reason to why I came up with this show is because I felt that the later show does not bring out the real Kenyan police intrigues, fun and life. We will also focus on the police lives out of work. Here, we will highlight what goes on in their homes and how they relate with their families. This is exactly what the audience is waiting for.” He promises

Watch this space.’ Afande’ is soon coming to a TV near you. Meanwhile check out this preview:

Did Sauti Sol Actually Break Up? Find Out Here

Towards the end of last week, rumors started flying around left, right and center that one of Kenya’s most trendy bands were heading to Splits-Ville.

It was said that the band was following the likes of Kleptomaniax, Spice girls and Blu3 and were breaking up. As expected this information broke one too many hearts and fans were soon mourning the demise of this brilliant band.

Thankfully this information was wildly flawed and Sauti Sol fans can now breathe a sigh of relief. The band posted this on their page:

The same way it is constitutionally illegal to imagine the death of the president. It is also illegal to imagine the breakup of @SAUTISOL – via Bien Aime

*Major sigh*At least we will get to hear once again, their blend of warm resonant pop and traditional Kenyan influences

Meet The Budding Fashion Designer Whose Designs Will Soon Be On Every Celebrity Body

A while back, I wrote an article that urged Kenyan celebrities to take a chance on fashion, experiment with the red carpet and get a unique look. Part of achieving this lies on a great designer and stylist.

The fashion industry has not yet reached the lies of Prada, Gucci or Vera Wang. But that does not mean that the fashion industry is not growing, its growing and thriving at a fast rate, Givenchy had better watch their back. We are all aware of Wambui Mukenyi who has styled the likes of Sarah Hassan and Torome Sission, but today we look at yet another budding designer Waithira Kibuchi.

The FAFA awards winner 2013 studied Fashion and Textile Design at the University of Nairobi, School of the Arts and Design. Her talent has grown under the tutelage of Ogake Mosomi, 2012’s FAFA Insight People’s Choice Award winner and she has also had the opportunity to work under and learn from renowned designer Patricia Mbela at her label Poisa, particularly on fitting and working with the African figure, as well as conceptualization.

About her muse when it comes to designing, Waithira says that:

“I find myself drawn to soft, fluid, feminine and ultra-sensual silhouettes, as well as bold colors. I like to describe my style as a cocktail of simplicity with a dash of daring and a distinctive flair for detail. Good clothes are a combination of the right fabric and color with the right cut as well as the right fit. Getting these factors right is an art as well as a science, and I’m glad that I have been trained to do so successfully. My design process is highly organized and systematic. As such, I build my collections around a central theme based on intricate research and experimentation. “

She then continues to add “I believe that the African fashion aesthetic should not be limited to the use of fabrics such as kitenge. Designers must employ any medium they feel would best tell their story. I anticipate to be amongst the emerging crop of contemporary African fashion designers who are global players; particularly, the person who will tell the story of our Kenyan heritage through fashion and textile design. I also aspire to be part of the process of reviving the Kenyan textile industry; we have plenty of local resources that we could tap into to build an ethical and sustainable fashion culture. I believe that designers have to take responsibility for their actions – we can no longer be satisfied by the mere act of producing new products. The world is trending towards sustainability in design, and I aspire to be part of that movement; constantly looking for new ways to counteract fast fashion.”

So how has her life changed after bagging the FAFA Insight Emerging designer award?

Being awarded last year’s FAFA Insight Emerging designer award has been a rewarding experience, part of my journey as a fashion designer who is going to take Kenya places. My dream is to make by brand, Qibuchi, accessible to the retail market – a feat that is by no means easy due to lack of structure in the Kenyan fashion industry. In the meantime, I am currently working on a capsule collection for the upcoming FAFA showcase, happening on the 29th of March.

Award Winning UK Gospel Artist Apologizes For Making Disparaging Comment about Citizen TV

Last Friday, award winning UK Gospel singer, Lurine Cato, made some denigrating remarks about Citizen TV in response to a video posted by Lupita Nyong’o on Facebook.

However, following an outcry by Kenyans on Twitter reacting to the article we did, the 2013 MOBO award winner, was forced to recant her statement and say ‘sorry’ for being dumb. In a tweet posted on Friday evening, Lurine said;

“…yeah I messed up looked and it and thought ‘what’? Dumb, really Lurine! What I was thinking translated wrongly sorry.”

It’s no the first time for an internationaly-acclaimed individual to make deriding remarks about Kenyans as Bishop TD Jakes, Korea Airlines and Jimmy Kimmel have all, in the past, looked down on Kenyans.

However, their comments have always been met with forbearance.

Why Teacher Wanjiku’s Show Flopped

Teacher Wanjiku premiered her show to the disappointment of everyone. I attempted to reach her for a comment on Friday but my calls went unanswered. I don’t blame her. Her’s is beginning to read like the tale of Eric Omondi and “Hawayu”, the abortive show he heralded. But why can’t Teacher Wanjiku seem to get her show off the ground? Well, I don’t think there is any one main reason. I think this is about the culmination of alot of bad things and sadly for her, Murphy’s Law.

to illustrate my point, I will draw on stand up comics from abroad -both continental and international.
For starters, Teacher Wanjiku is a role. She is one character. A character can hardly carry a show. You need versatility otherwise your show ends up being one-dimensional. And a one dimensional show gets boring pretty fast. It will be Teacher Wanjiku telling and retelling different versions of the same joke over and over again. Sad.
Look at Dave Chappelle. He embodied multiple personalities for his show. He was a crack head when necessary and Dave Chappelle for other skits.

He could call on different individuals -although he played all the roles- to keep things fresh and funny. Teacher Wanjiku is simply Teacher Wanjiku. Try getting LOLs 3 weeks into your show Teacher. Trust that they’ll dry up faster than Chege Miati’s elbows in this heat.

Another reason why Teacher Wanjiku is struggling is because her content is paper thin aswell. Any good comedian should be able to poke fun at what is facing society at the moment. She needs to be able to draw from a wide range of subject matter but I do not see her -or any Kenyan comedian for that matter- taking that risk. Look at Basketmouth for the illustration. You need to be versatile when it comes to subject matter. Basketmouth goes at everything and everyone and though sometimes he takes the joke too far -as with the rape joke incident, I would rather a comedian willing to take risks than one scared of them.

And finally, Teacher Wanjiku has displayed cowardice. She wants to hide from Ghafla and act like everything is alright instead of poking fun at her failure. The show is only an episode old so she should pick herself up, learn her lessons and move on. Instead, what with dodging all my calls and her husband cum manager feigning lack of internet, she is burying her head in the sand.

The moral of this story is:

1. diversify

2. take risks with the subject matter

3. stop running away from your failure, learn from them

Celebrity Look Alikes: Daniel Peters And Roscoe Dash (PHOTOS)

It is said that everyone has a doppleganger -someone who looks remarkably like you in some part or the other of this world. If so, then I have never seen mine nor heard anyone claim they have seen someone who looks like me. But Daniel Peters, the lad that starred alongside Brenda Wairimu in the hit NTV show “Mali” has one whom I came across.

So what I want from you as Ghafla readers is for your feedback: doi I need my lenses checked or do the pair actually look alike as I claim?

Check them out below and let me know:

Hmm? What do you think because I honestly feel that the pair actually do look alike and so does Daniel Peters it would seem. But this has nothing to do with us, it’s about what you think as a Ghafla reader.

Ghafla Exclusive: Churchill Finally Tells Us What He Thinks Of Teacher Wanjiku’s New Show

Hot on the heels of Anne Kansiime’s show Don’t Mess with Kansiime was Teacher Wanjiku’s new show.

The show did not perform as expected and was dull; it flopped harder than Colonel Mustapha and Huddah Monroe’s attempt at a relationship,it flopped harder than shaving off your eyebrows then drawing them on.(That’s just my opinion,I hope Teacher Wanjiku’s success at her show proves me wrong.)

We were all quick  to write it off, but not Churchill.

The comedian who has nurtured talents such as Tr. Wanjiku,Eric Omondi and Owago Onyiro was very gracious when we called him up on Teacher Wanjiku’s show.

The optimistic comedian said that,”Everything has a beginning, sometimes shaky. Let us not write off Teacher Wanjiku’s show yet. Let’s give it time to grow. It is a good concept and it has good structure, let us give it time.
