Mzee Ojwang’s cringe-worthy story blew up a couple weeks ago. We didn’t know just how impoverished a life Mzee was living until it was brought to light by the Sonko Rescue Team. We were shocked. And outraged. All at the same time.
Why were we shocked? Well, because Mzee Ojwang,or Benson Wanjau,is not just any other Kenyan. He’s a legendary television actor and his face has been imprinted at the back of the minds of millions and millions of Kenyans.
He had spent ALL his life making us laugh. But now,the same iconic TV star was now holed up in the shaky ramshackle he called a house. Unable to eat or move or see.
Why were we outraged? Well,Because someone of Mzee’s stature did NOT deserve to live such a penurious life….And most certainly did not deserve to be hauled to the limelight so ignominiously. For lack of simple funds to go the hospice.
And now,we decided to track down Mzee Ojwang’s fellow actor and castmate in the long-running TV series VITIMBI.
He’s none other than Ngomongo. The elderly chap who,in the TV show, used to run a hotel just around Mzee Ojwang’s house. He’s been in EVERY episode of Vitimbi. Since 1985.
Ngomongo, real name Armstrong Sobayeni, lives in Dandora Phase 1. He lives in a one bedroomed house. With his 2 high-schools going sons.
After I called him last Thursday to organize a meeting, he said he was in BuruBuru for a funeral mass. And said that we would meet in Dandora by around 1pm.
“Where exactly?” I asked.
“Kuja Dandora Phase 1. Ukifika Seniors Driving School, teremka kidogo halafu Uingie na left…then teremka kidogo pia utakuta supermarket inaitwa KARIA SUPERMARKET. Utanikuta hapo….”
I organized a cab. And,with Tonny Ndung’u,off we went.
We arrived and met him idling right outside the small supermarket…Her was dressed in an oversize gray coat that hung over his limp body and some khaki trousers. He looked frail and tired, his eyes betraying the tribulations he’s had to put up with. His voice, though faint with age,was still somewhat powerful and his body just slightly sprightly…
“Habari mzee…?” I said walking out of the car. He airily walked over to us. And after brief introductions, we sat down for business.
He had chosen a nearby nyama choma joint to be the venue for the interview. It was rickety and rather unkempt.
“Si twende kwako tu Mara moja? Tuongelee huko?” I asked him.
“Hmmm kwangu ni mbali kidogo na hapa…” He said.
“Tuko na gari…” I countered.
“Lakini unajua…hata tukienda,saa hii hakuna mtu….”
Well,I gave up pushing. I’d make do with the shoddy supu nyama joint he’d proposed.
We sat…(Whole interview was conducted in fluent Swahili.I translated what I felt needed a translation)
Cabu Gah: So,what are Your real names?
Ngomongo: Real name is Armstrong Sobayeni…
CG: How old are You?? Approximately…
NGMGO: Hmmm,wacha tuseme…eehh…andika 60. Hmmm,above 60…
CG: Mzee when did You join Vitimbi? Or,basically,KBC??
NGMGO: Mimi niliingia KBC kitambo Sanaa…miaka ya sabini. I was still at KBC when Mzee Kenyatta died…I remember telling the then-KBC staff that Mzee amkekufa…That was around 1978..
CG : So You’ve been at KBC for close to half a century now…50 years, right?
NGMGO: Exactly…Miaka mingi sana…
CG: What were You doing at KBC in the 1970s??
NG: I used to be in a comedy show called “Come What May”. It was conceptualized, scripted and directed by my friend Field Rue who was also the main character in the show…
CG: And then…
NG: Show went on…to the mid 80s when I then joined the Vioja Mahakamani crew. As a Court Clerk… I used to act alongside Othorong’ong’o,Amka Twende,Mzee Tamaa and Wariah they were mostly court prosecutors….
CG: And then….
NG: Show went on…Oh,and the Magistrate in the show was one Anne Wanjugu…
CG: Go on…
NG: Then I started appearing on Vitimbi as a guest…as an extra….
CG: Still in the 80s??
NG: Yes,still in the 80s…that was after the death of Amka Twende…He used to run a canteen in the Vitimbi show. And after his death,I took up his role and character….to date…

Selfie with Mzee Ngomongo…..

CG: Oh,interesting…
NG: Yes…it was a good ride…only that it was not remunerative at all…
CG: What do You mean? How much did you use to earn at the show??
NG: Back then?? 40 Bob per episode
CG: Forty shillings!?!?
NG: Yes…40 shillings per episode. .
CG: Wow…
NG: We didn’t even have a contract…they would provide us with blank vouchers to sign. They wouldn’t even indicate how much money they intended to pay You on the voucher. It was blank. The money part was blank..you would be asked to sign it and then, because you’ve already signed, they’d indicate whatever salary they wished….AFTER You’ve already signed…
CG: Sounds fishy…
NG: It was very fishy. Your salary was kept away from You…You’d be asked to sign blank papers….to agree to a salary you knew nothing about…then they’d pay you anything they wished…because you’ve already signed…
(Click Next Page For Last part Of Interview)
CG: That’s unprofessional.
NG: Absolutely!
CG: And even with such a crappy system of payment, still they’d block You from ever doing other shows on other TV stations…
NG: Yes. We were bound to KBC. For life…Even with such a laughable salary. And unprofessional payment methods…we were never allowed to hunt elsewhere… Do other hassles…
CG: When did You start living in Dandora??
NG: In 1980…
CG: Wait….What!!??
NG: Yes,nilianza kuishi huku 1980…
CG: so You’ve been living in that SAME house for 30 years now??
NG: Yes…nimeishi hapo hapo kwa hio nyumba…for the last 35 years…
CG: In the same house!!?
NG: Same house…
CG: Why didn’t you ever move??
NG: You need money to move houses….
CG: After working at KBC for 50 years now…what can You show as your achievements? Land?? Property? Businesses?? What did Your 50-year employment at KBC earn You??
NG: Mali yangu yote ni zile vitu ziko kwa nyumba yangu …sina shamba wala biashara wala gari wala chochote…Mali yangu iko kwa nyumba…

CG: Wow! And are You married??
NG: Yes. I was. She passed away in 2007 though…Married with three kids….
CG: Oh,sorry. What going on with the kids? Where are they??
NG: The first born got married…she passed her KCSE but wouldn’t make it to University…
CG: Why??
NG: Uwezo….sina uwezo baba…
CG: And want of the others…
NG: There is James Sikutali who is a form three student at Spring Of Joy Secondary School and then there is Alphonce Swai who is a form 1 student at Joyvilla Academy…
CG: Where are these schools??
NG: They’re both here in Dandora. Ziko hapa tu. Ni day schools….
CG: So these boys come home daily?
NG: Yes,they do…nakaa tu nao. I’ve been singlehandedly watching over them, feeding them and raising them since their mother passed away close to 10 years ago…
CG: What kind of a house do You live in??
NG: Ni zile nyumba za ploti tuu….One bedroom….
CG: How much house rent do You pay per month….
NG: Elfu sita…
CG: Excuse Me….
NG: Yes,six thousand… Na huwa nalipa kidogo kidogo..nikipata mia moja..mia tano…napatia Landlord…mpaka inafika..lakini sasa inaongezwa…it will be eight thousand now…
CG: How did You lose your job at KBC?
NG: Walituita mkutano…wakatuambia eti tumezeeka. Halafu tukaambiwa tuende nyumbani…kazi imeisha…wanataka waigizaji vijana…
CG: Wow…just like that??
NG: Just like that. No warning,no notice ,nothing. Tuliitwa tu…tukaambiwa tumezeeka an hatuhitajiki tena…
CG: Halafu??
NG: Halafu nini?? Ukiambiwa uende si unaenda…Hakuna la kusema…ukifukuzwa unaenda…tulisimama tu tukatoka nje na maisha ikabadilika…
CG: Did they give you any money? Any amount of lump sum cash to say goodbye??
NG: Nothing. We were sent away empty handed.
CG: Not even a small appreciation cheque? For being such loyal KBC legends for decades??
NG: Nothing. Hata shilingi kumi ya chai. Tulifukuzwa kama mbwa….
CG: Damn…And what do You do everyday when you wake up?
NG: LOITERING.
CG: Whaaat!??!
NG: Hakunaa cha kufanya . All I do is loitering. All day. Natembea kila mahali…ukikaa chini mahali pamoja…ufikirie shida zako, utakufa…I try not to think. Or be alone…nazunguka zunguka tu…all day…Halafu unajua huwezi tu kaa hapo kwa ploti na wanawake wa wenyewe….Wazee wengine wakienda kazini wewe unabaki tu hapo na wanawake wa wenyewe…wakichota maji uko hapo, wakiongea, uko hapo…huwezi fanya hivo…lazima pia wewe utokee…ukatembee…kama mwanaume…huwezi kaa tu hapo…

CG: And how do people treat you around here??
NG: Wakiniona huwa wanasena fungeni milango bwana sumbua yuwaja….
CG: Oh,that hurts …
NG: It hurts…certainly… Unaona hizi viatu zangu?? So unaona vumbi? Nilikwambia nilikuwa BuRuburu mazishi? I walked from here to Buruburu and back…
CG: On foot?
NG: On foot….Can I tell You something? Na najua hutaamini….I used to walk from Dandora to KBC to act. Almost everyday.
CG: No way!
NG: Believe Me. Uliza mtu yeyote. I have walked to KBC for all those years…ili niwachekeshe Wakenya…
CG: What a thankless job…
NG: Inauma sana…
CG: Has KBC contacted you ever since thy sent you off? Any word from them? Especially after Mzee Ojwang’s woes were publicized??
NG: Nothing…No word,no call…nothing…
Cabu Gah: What’s Your message to KBC?
NG: My message is simple; I appreciate the years we shared together but I HATE the way You kicked me out…
CG: Your message to young Kenyan actors…
NG: Focus in your art. But REFUSE to be exploited. Refuse refuse refuse to be exploited! Know your worth. And learn how to bargain your value! Sisi hatukuwa na bargaining power. As a veteran artist,I know what it means to be exploited….
CG: Mzee thank you for your time….
NG: Nimeshukuru sana….Mbarikiwe vijana…
