Actress Lupita Nyong’o’s name came into play once again when US President Barack Obama visited the country over the weekend, 9 years since he last came as a Senator of Illinois.

Obama’s arrival was received with a very welcome, with many Kenyans fascinated by the fact that the Kenyan-American managed to beat everyone to become leader of the most powerful country in the world.

And so when the most powerful man makes a stop anyone, you expect so much to happen. Among them is tight security that is just out of this world. We saw this over the weekend.

Despite all this, Obama was always in the public, sometimes interacting with people freely as he wowed many with his incredible oratory skills.

His security is the reason why Lupita Nyong’o is the subject of discussion.

Controversial blogger Robert Alai launched a scathing attack on the actress who was in the country a month ago, castigating her on how she hid from Kenyans during her early days of the visit.

Alai was the very first person to criticize Lupita when he told her that the manner in which she was dodging Kenyans like they were suffering from Leprosy was so uncalled for.

This time round, Alai has once again blasted Lupita, saying that she hid from Kenyans yet she was protected by Villa Rosa Kempinski bouncers while Obama who is protected by FBI and the US Secret agents was all over the place.

Alai said:

It was a debate that started when White House and State House announced that POTUS, a Kenyan-American man leading the world’s most revered Superpower, would be visiting Kenya this July.

Larry Madowo and Jeff Koinange started it off and had to bet on who would be privileged to sit down Barack Obama and have an interview with him.

These two gentlemen were so optimistic until yesterday when they saw Air Force One drive through the runway, gather pace and cruise into the Machakos County skies and into Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Obama had ended his three day visit to Kenya as the first ever sitting US President. All the time he was around, Larry Madowo had a tight schedule on air at NTV while Jeff Koinange was nowhere to be seen except on social media.

Even after I drafted an article on Thursday explaining why Larry and Jeff wont interview Obama, they kept their hopes high. I had said that it could be impossible for any journalist to sit Obama down for an exclusive interview. I was wrong too.

Capital FM stunned us all. No one saw this coming. And this is why Chris Kirubi remains the only DJ around.

As media houses kept a distance and panned their cameras from the fences to capture what Obama was doing, Capital FM had a room well prepared, microphones well set and Olive Burrows dressed in a nice black dress ready to share with Obama.

Yes, she did, much to our consternation. I mean, none of us saw this coming. We all know Larry, Jeff, Chamwada, Julie, et al are some of the celebrated media interviewers we have around. But none of them was considered for this.

Thank God the bet the two made will go to some charity organization. But Olive just stole the show.  And so did Capital FM.

Here is how it happened:

Over the weekend, one of Kenya’s fastest selling tabloid newspapers the Nairobian came under fire from Kenyans who felt like they welcomed Obama with a scandalous article.

The article that graced the cover page was called “How Scandals made Obama President” and it rubbed people off the wrong way, judging from the angry reactions of Twitter. Which in my opinion was just the knee-jerk reaction by people who did not read the whole article.

They just read the click-bait headline and rushed to comment, not wanting to be left out of the roasting bandwagon.

Kenyan journalists are on the receiving end of a barrage of attacks from business mogul Chris Kirubi following the Obama visit.

Through one of his social media accounts, DJ CK took issue with the manner in which Kenyan journalists were asking questions when they met Obama in State House on Saturday evening.

Kirubi was literally irritated by what he says are wanting questions they asked POTUS during his short-lived tour to his father’s homeland.

Chris Kirubi, a man who owns a media house himself, joins the bandwagon of Kenyans who have always had issues with journalists whom they term as half-baked and too soft on weighty matters.

He said:

His criticism came a day before his Capital FM landed an exclusive interview with Obama. Olive Burrows, the lady picked to interview, came under heavy scrutiny from a section of Kenyans, including her fellow journalists for what they said was a shoddy interview.

Citizen TV’s Jackie Maribe was criticized for posing ‘ an unnecessary and poor-researched question” to Obama at State House. Jackie asked Obama when he is lifting the travel advisory issued to US citizen who plan to visit Kenya.

Some Kenyans argued that Jackie did not understand who issued travel advisories and was posing the question to the wrong person. One of them said:

The most invincible-or so it appears-student leader in Kenya has found himself in not-so-rosy waters after a scathing attack by his fellow comrade and the abrasive leader of the MKU students association. And the words used were not any sweet either.

After Babu’s notorious stint as SONU leader,issuing haphazard threats,making far-fetched declarations and taking ill-advised moves, ala Mike Sonko,concocting his own vocabularies along the way,a student leader in one of Nairobi’s most notable Universities is not impressed.

Allan Chacha,the MKU Nairobi campus student leader and also the leader of the Kenya Private Universities Student Caucus,went on a tempestuous tirade yesterday blasting his comrade Babu Owino and even sensationally claiming that Babu direly needed urgent rehabilitation for his waywardness,lack of tact,hooliganism and disastrous stint as SONU president characterized by inflammatory statements, incitement and wanting leadership.

Chacha first made the damning comments on an exclusive interview with the Varcity.co.ke, a Kenyan University website that sought to interview him on a range of issues. But what really stuck out from the whole interview was his dismissal of Babu Owino as a lost soul whose putting the whole University body to shame.

And on an exclusive phone call to Ghafla,Chacha reiterated that Babu deserved to be in a mental facility. And also called Babu ‘insane’ especially after the now-infamous letter that Babu penned outlining his reasons as to why visiting US President Barack Obama should visit UoN. And spelling out, in a very colorful way,the consequences of Obama snubbing the education hub.

The letter,though probably made in jest and in typical Babu showmanship, is part of the biggest reason why Chacha, the 22-year old student leader who is also gunning for a Parliamentary seat come 2017,went all out in his scathing attack on his nemesis.

Chacha,in the phone call, also added that he had ALL reasons to believe that Babu was insane and that nothing could save him… Except, of course,an immediate rehab stint.

And after Ghafla contacted Babu to share the story with him and seek his opinion,Babu was on his best behavior. No really.

In his characteristic fashion,Babu dismissed Chacha by this gem of a quote;

” Let him rehabilitate the mother first for having given birth to a zombie”

Oh sh*t! It doesn’t get better. Or does it!?

Chacha said that as a leader, you don’t encourage your followers to go ahead and commit crimes or atrocities especially after the students famously claimed that they would commit suicide if Obama never visited their school.

Chacha even suggested that President Uhuru Kenyatta should intervene and haul Babu’s ass to the nearest rehab center himself.

Well well… Where is this going!? And are we about to see the end of it?

Whatever the outcome… We shall be sitting here and waiting up on it.

POTUS came, gave us hope with his out-of-this-world oratory skills, promised us goodies from the world  superpower and promised to return as soon as possible.

I believe TV was watched in Kenya like never before. We were all excited and this morning, the Obama blues are still taking toll of us. The Obama fever is still eating into our beings despite the disruption the most powerful man on earth brought about.

And as we all wanted to identify with the leader of the free world in one way or the other, there are three women (if I am allowed to call them so) who stole the show during the Obama visit, and are likely to go down the books of history as having directly interacted with the US leader.

Joan Wamaitha

The 8-year old little angel may not know what was happening over the weekend but some day she will reap from this (if Kenya does not become hostile to her). Joan Wamaitha, who has been rumoured to be orphaned and hails from Mariakani, was at hand to welcome POTUS at the airport when he disembarked from Air Force One on Friday night. She was arguably the very first person to share a word with the most powerful man on earth. She handed him a bouquet of flowers as Obama requested for a photo with her.

What does it feel like when you are the very first Kenyan to welcome a sitting US President into Kenya for the first time in history? Great/out of the world/exciting/gut-wrenching (delete as appropriate).

Yes, Joan Wamaitha did just that. She may not understand what she did but some years to come, when she is grown enough and sees these photos and the videos, she will be a hot property.

Julie Gichuru

The TV queen was trending on Saturday after she embraced her African character as she took to the podium at the UN headquarters to welcome the US President and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta.

Julie was so privileged to be the woman picked to welcome Obama and Uhuru to the stage to officially open the Global Entrepreneurship Summit at Gigiri.

She stole the show further when she ululated, embracing the character of a real African woman, much to the consternation of the gathering at Gigiri. She has since been lauded for the manner in which she did her thing although critics argue that she overdid the whole thing and looked like an excited school girl.

All in all, Julie had her moment and she is likely to have her name etched in the books of history.

Dr. Auma Obama

This is the woman who acquired celebrity status in just a minute, or so. That warm hug, the embrace, the peck from the most powerful man on earth, all cast Auma into the limelight. For those who did not know her before they were surprised who was this lady hugging Obama as he disembarked from Air Force One.

And then… she was seen settling in the back seat of the Beast, the safest car on earth that carries Obama around town. It has never happened before. That another unauthorized person gets into the Beast with Obama? Never before.

But Lord… Auma was here. Receiving the favour in return of what she did 29 years ago. Tenda wema nenda zako mpaji atakujali.

And then Auma was all over the place. She stepped where Obama did. Ate what Obama ate. Breathed the same air Obama breathed. All the good things.

And to climax everything, she introduced her half-brother at Kasarani, something that should have been done by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

What a lucky woman

The Citizen siren has managed to keep her private affairs, especially her pregnancy, a hush hush but the angel of the Lord presumably descended on her and instructed her to open up about her baby-bump.

Even while anchoring news, Janet has always managed to hide her belly from the curious eyes of the viewers who have been dying to take a good look at it.

Her co-anchor, Hussein Mohamed, has been on her neck trying to coerce her into talking about her pregnancy whenever they jointly appeared on screen to anchor prime time news.

Janet’s pregnancy first showed on the day she walked down the aisle to officially become the wife of her sweetheart, Eddie Ndichu.

All this while, she had managed to dodge all queries raised in regard to her protruding belly. But she finally quenched the thirst of many when she ultimately decided to talk about her baby-bump.

Janet disclosed her pregnancy is 25-week-old. That means she has about 11 weeks left till she welcomes a bundle of joy!

Machakos Governor, Dr. Alfred Mutua was on the spotlight over the weekend when US’ President Obama touched down at the JKIA for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

The day that many Kenyans had religiously waited finally came and Obama alighted Air Force One at around 8:10 pm, to begin his three-day stay in the country.

But people don’t forget. And not just people but Kenyans.

Governor Alfred Mutua ate a humble pie when Obama jetted in as US President, his statement on Obama which he made 9 years ago coming back to harshly haunt him.

No one really minded about it until when the man who has been voted as the best governor was seen lining at the airport to bid Obama bye as he departed for Addis Ababa.

Kenyans quickly took to social media to remind Mutua how he despised Obama when he visited Kenya in 2006 as Senator of Illinois.

Mutua said then of Obama:

“He’s an inexperienced young man who cannot teach Kenya how to run her affairs…..he’s just a junior senator from Illinois state and cannot therefore speak on behalf of the United States”.

This was when Obama lectured the government on corruption when addressing a gathering at the University of Nairobi.

This will certainly go down history as one of the most talked about visits by Sitting head of states in Kenyan History. Last Evening, Us President stole the show during dinner when he danced along Sauti Sol’s Lipala dance with flawless grace. Which begs the question, when exactly was he tutored to dance so? 

 President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret also joined in the dance, at State House, so did Obama’s extended family: half-sister Auma and half-brother Malik Abong’o who accompanied the president for dinner at statehouse. 

Sauti sol praised obama on their Instagram, saying that:

I’ve been following this rather awkward trending topic ‪#‎KenyanMediaFailure‬ on Twitter with much amusement and still rage and disbelief. Once again, that school of Twitter airheads has come out,guns blazing, to pile blame on an entity they know so damn little about.

All through my existence as a human being on earth, I have always been true to myself. I’ve never found the need to be pretentious in order to fit in or please people. I never mind losing friends and alienating associates if their absence will create a jovial culture in my heart.

I never fear expressing my views as a writer Ever since I was a child I’ve also never hidden from the fact that i love hip hop music and all local music. I always fought with my mum because she felt that listening to Nonini and Ludacris would ruin my morals, I could have quit listening to Bobby Mapesa and Jua cali in order to make my mother happy but I didn’t. I wanted to make myself happy. I wanted to be true to myself. Maybe my morals have been punctured through the years but I can’t blame music for any mind corruption I might have. My mother still considers me a great man so maybe I’ve kept everything in check while still being true to myself. Music is food for the soul, especially local music. I always find the need to defend music that I adore. I never shy away from criticizing music that I detest too, even if it has global acclaim. That’s because I know what I love. At times, I sit down and marvel at how the Kenyan music industry has boomed over the past decade. One of the key things to not though, is that the boom cannot be attributed to solitary growth alone. Various brand s have helped propel Kenyan music to near top levels. This week on twitter there were various debates on local music and quality sparked by Victoria Kimani is it that we as Kenyans do not support local music or is it that we only support what we consider good quality regardless of the artist’s country of origin? I came across this Trust Condom ad as the debate was going on online and what hit me more than just the TV commercial was the song. Production, Quality and catchy tune. Done by Kenyans. Isn’t Trust a Kenyan brand and supporting these artists by involving them? The purpose of the campaign somewhat fits the conversation online. If an important visitor was coming to your house for the second time since 1989, then you would be forgiven for being overly excited, cautious and prepared. What you would never be forgiven for would be: Treating your family members like nonentities because an important visitor was coming, an equivalent of desertion at the hour of need.

President Obama’s visit is aimed at strengthening the bond between the united states and Kenya in matters, social, economic and political, this will be his first visit since he became leader and is one of the most talked about phenomenon of Kenyan political history,  eclipsing almost all major events happening this weekend.

The beast has been on a wanderlust all over Nairobi ahead of the  POTUS Visit later in the day today, credible 411 reveal that Uncle Barry has left Washington for Nairobi. Now, the beast – the highly pimped out Cadillac was on a visit to the statehouse today in the morning, like expected, the statehouse staff were beside themselves and savored the once-in-a lifetime moment.

Our president is surrounded by ‘yes’ men, hungry to loot, knowing fully well that the president is more concerned with public relations than actual work. Active citizens have been demonized because they are the only voices left. The opposition is disorganized, corrupt, and visionless and their aging leader has refused to democratize his party and pass on the baton.

I read that you and Michelle are worth $6million after six years as president. Consider this, an accountant working in the Nairobi County government earning $850 dollars a month accumulated $5 million dollars in a few months. In fact, every year the auditor general reports on billions misappropriated in government and still no one has been convicted. The government itself admitted it loses one-third of the national budget to corruption. In a 2.1 trillion budget, that means if the government stopped corruption, foreign aid would be unnecessary. In places like Turkana, almost everyone elected to date was an employee with an aid agency and was elected as thank you. That, President Obama, is the kind of democracy you are visiting.

Reforms, you suggest? We have tried those.

First we tried land reforms but President Kibaki and now Uhuru both refused to fully implement the Ndung’u report on illegal and irregular land allocation, commissioned specifically to guide such a process. We have every reason to fear that a repeat of the 2007-08 post-election violence will happen, encouraged by grievances over land ownership.

We tried judiciary reforms. They stalled because the rot is so entrenched that the man leading the reforms has been falsely attacked, finding himself alone as he finishes his time in office. We attempted Police reforms. The people implementing them discovered a way of “eating and cleansing” officers who can’t explain their source of wealth.

In fact, the Kenya Police has been ranked the most corrupt institution in East Africa by Transparency international for years, and the Kenya Police, Ministry of Lands and Judiciary remain the most corrupt institutions in the country. These three institutions together have contributed to the stunting of our growth as a nation. I’m 32 years old and in my entire lifetime l can’t remember seeing or reading about someone working for any of these institutions being convicted for corruption.

Looks can be deceiving. For the two days you will be in Nairobi, the areas you will visit will be the cleanest, safest spaces. Street families have been rounded off the streets and those flowerpots near State House are just for you. Once you leave, there will be leaks over inflated “Obama” tenders and as usual no one will be charged. There will be outrage for a few days and then we shall go back to our “normal” accustomed to the theft in government. Our normal tolerates evil, would lynch a man who steals to fend for his family, and proudly puts thieves in office.

We “ordinary” citizens help entrench impunity by our inaction. We look the other way when evil happens because we are scared. We vote for our tribes, and defend our thieves while some of us steal from accident victims. Trust me, economic terrorists have done more harm in this country than Al-Shabaab will ever do. But you will be safe from Al-Shabaab because 15,000 police officers (10% of the total police force) have been assigned to secure the city during your visit.

You will discuss terror without noticing the irony. In Northern Kenya more than 100 schools have been closed because of insecurity but the victims of terror are now treated as suspects. Our president has no strategy for tackling terror; first blaming the opposition, then profiling Somalis and rounding them up in internment camps. The government’s policies are radicalizing our peaceful Somali population – as a black man in America you know the impact that profiling has on the individual and the community. Eastleigh is our Ferguson and we also can’t breathe.

Our leaders will keep you away from these issues. They will drive you on brand new roads, fixed in weeks after being neglected for decades, just for you. Enjoy your stay. Don’t stray far from your hotel or your second name Hussein may get you arrested by the Anti Terrorism Police Unit, without a due process stopover in court no matter how innocent you are. They may torture you and kill you, and never tell your family where your body can be found.

Mr. President, believe it or not, I am actually hopeful for Kenya. Hopeful that my peers will rise above tribalism, mediocrity and corruption and push for real change in the 2017 elections. This is the same class of criminals recently implicated in the “Chickengate” scandal, and while their criminal counterparts in the United Kingdom were jailed, the Kenyans were “cleansed” after sharing the chicken with the investigators.

We hope your visit will push our president to fight corruption from the highest level. Tell him this: he, unlike witnesses against the powerful is safe. Unlike the whistleblowers, activists, investigative journalists and average Kenyans he is safe to do the right thing. He is under protection from an elite presidential guard ready to die for him. He can defeat the Kenya mafia and lose popularity with the corrupt but gain a whole country.

Tell him, many Kenyans think he can do better. Ask president Uhuru if he believes in himself. He has the power to change Kenya for better, but will he? Here’s hoping he starts chanting “Yes we can” fight corruption and build a better Kenya
