The Report: Kenya 2016, produced by OBG revealed that Kenya’s economic outlook for the years ahead looks robust and Kenya is now the largest economy in East Africa.

This report was launched during the Kenya International Investment Conference (KIICO) 2015 today, as hundreds of high-level delegates gathered for the three-day conference (23-25 November) in Nairobi.

Its economy is 14 times the combined GDP of all African countries. We have 900 nominated MCAs in Kenya. The total cost of maintenance for each MCA is close to 1 Million shillings. This translates to Ksh 10.8 billion shillings to mantain nominated MCAs per year. In January 2013 the minimum salary for a councillor was Ksh 30k (Mandera county) while the highest paid was Ksh 80k (Nairobi County). Today after factoring allowances an MCA takes home close to Ksh 500k. We really do not need senators and women reps. That would save close to Ksh 35 billion per year. Reducing MPs to 200 saves the exchequer close to Ksh 50 billion per year if not more. Kenya earns around Ksh 50 billion from tourism. That’s how significant that saving would be”

The Police carried out a raid on commercial sex workers and netted hundreds of them who were then forced to take HIV test.

Human Right activists are having stomach indigestion after they learnt that the Police and Kisii County officials arrested and forced prostitutes to take HIV test.

Hundreds of hookers were apprehended during the raid; girls as young as 15 years old and mature women were arrested by the police.

The law enforcement officers rounded the ladies of the evening in Police lorries and dumped them in Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital where they were forced to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases.

Human Rights defenders have condemned the Police action saying it was against the law to force someone to take HIV test.

Slum violence left an innocent man dead and his family traumatized by the tragic event. Jaguar was in the informal settlement to condole with Korea’s family.

The philanthropic singer made his way to Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum to visit one of the families that lost their member to the ghetto violence.

The singer says unruly youth went on rampage in the Embakassi slum stabbing anyone that crossed their path.

Reverend Lucy Natasha received thunderclaps of attention after she made her debut into limelight and Kenyans could not help but gawk and rave about the beautiful preacher.

But it seems that Reverend Natasha is not the only hottie in the Gospel ministry, Meet Prophetess Monica, Lucy’s friend who conducts monthly prophetic worship nights in the country and also has a youth talk show that aims at inspiring the youth.

While many expected Janet Mbugua and her husband to jet off to an exotic location, they decided to keep their honeymoon destination local.

The couple decided to spend their honeymoon at the Ol Pajeta Conservancy in Laikipia County,a sanctuary for many animals, including two species of critically-endangered rhinos. It has become a popular tourist destination and has also garnered international media attention.

This week,CNN’s  ‘Inside Africa’ gets up-close with the last male northern white rhino in the world, and learns how conservationists have been able to bring back the population of black rhinos.

From medical experts to the Maasai cricket team, ‘Inside Africa’ meets the peoplewho are doing their part to protect such rare mammals from extinction and shine a light on environmental issues.

The programme opens by meeting Sudan, the last male northern white rhino in the world, at his home in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 360 square kilometre space and a sanctuary for many animals.

These are extraordinary times for Sudan, as a team of medical experts from around the world try a procedure that could put his life at risk, but ultimately may save his species.

Park Ranger Zacharia Mutai tells ‘Inside Africa’: “He’s 42 years old. So, we need to take care of him so we don’t have to lose him. If we lose him, that’s the end of it.”

Richard Vinge, CEO of The Ol Pejeta Conservancy explains to the programme: “When the opportunity came to try and rescue the northern white rhino from extinction and play a part in the process, it was obviously interesting for us to try to get involved.”

The northern white rhino population has been devastated more than most species of rhino because governments in the areas where they lived, often due to civil war, were slow to crack down on poaching.

Vinge tells the programme about Sudan: “When he first came here, he was a territorial male. He was active and able to mate. So he mated with the females several times. But unfortunately he we were never able to get a successful pregnancy.”

The Ol Pejeta medical team has decided their best and safest option is to take sperm from Sudan.

Doctor, Stephen Ngulu veterinaria, tells ‘Inside Africa’: “We are very optimistic that we can hopefully carry out that procedure successfully, and be able to get some viable sperm. Sudan is very old, so our hopes are not 100 per cent.”

The programme learns that due to the lack of female northern white rhinos the best hope is the genetically similar southern white rhino, but only if Sudan’s sperm and one of the females eggs can be fertilised in vitro.

Jan Stejskal, from Dvur Kralove Zoo in Czech Republic (the owner of the rhinos) tells the programme: “This embryo would be put inside a surrogate mother, which would be a southern white rhino in origin. So, this is a possible way how to save the northern white rhino… This way has never been done before. It has been done with horses, with cattle, but not with rhinos. Due to this reason, it is quite challenging.”

‘Inside Africa’ learns that some sperm has been saved previously, meaning if science can figure out how to freeze the female’s eggs this species might just be paused rather than wiped out forever.

While the northern white rhino understandably gets the most attention, it’s the black rhino that’s one of the big success stories of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. There were only 20 black rhinos in 1993 but today the number is 107.

Wildlife supervisor Wilson Murithi tells the programme: “The reason why this place was so successful is that the habitat itself, there’s a lot of food. The management, the security aspect-we have very few cases of the poaching.”

‘Inside Africa’ sees that the security teams in the conservation are always moving. The unit monitors wildlife with a rule, that every black rhino on Ol Pejeta must be seen at least once every three days. The rangers in this unit are often the first line of defense against outside threats.

The head of security at the conservation tells the programme: “When you’re patrolling, you look for any strange footprint. Your report anything that you hear, so for instance gunshots can be reported. That’s why you have some people deployed strategically in the conservancy, just in case you need a team to respond to that particular form of information that you have.”

There is one group of local Massai who found a slightly different way to highlight the effects of rhino poaching. They swapped their spears for bats and are the subject of a new movie named after their cricket team: ‘Warriors Film’.

‘Warriors Film’ documents the resistance the players face from elders in their community, while also showing the inspiration and hope they symbolise for young people.

The captain of the team tells ‘Inside Africa’: “Cricket has opened a lot of doors to the Maasai cricket warriors, and not just to us, but our village and to the conservation world… We love nature. We feel we are connected, daily to the nature. And if we clear all the wild and bring about deforestation and kill the animals, then some people will be effected. The Maasai people will be affected. The world will be affected.”

Former boxing champion, Conjestina Achieng, will have to do without members of her family for her own good.

Conjestina was taken to Mathari Hospital after it was said she was suffering from a mental disease. The boxer has since revealed she wasn’t mentally deranged.

The boxer paid Alex ole Magelo (Nairobi County Assembly Speaker) a courtesy call when she made the revelation.

She says her tribulations were brought by stress. Mr. Magelo has offered to cater for Conjestina’s rehabilitation.

He says he plans to isolate Conjestina from members of her family members for at least five months as she undergoes rehabilitation.

The Nairobi County Assembly Speaker revealed he will rent Conje a house where she would stay as she undergoes treatment.

Was it so thirsty or do modern day goats drink soda? A Garissa goat has left many scratching heads trying to comprehend how a goat has craving for soda which it drinks on its own.

I understand North Eastern is a dry place where water is a rare luxury. Maybe this is why animals from that region can afford to gulp down soda with such a passion.

A video showing a Garissa goat quaffing Coke with the zeal of a rural child who hasn’t seen soda for months, is doing rounds on the internet.

The goat would grab a Coca Cola bottle then drink the Coke nonstop until the bottle was empty. It would then bleat looking around as if demanding more soda.

Mesmerized residents kept on giving the goat soda and it would empty the 200ml Coke bottle in a matter of seconds.

This is because highly acclaimed Grammy Award Winners Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown, multiple Grammy Award Nominee Gerald Albright, and fast rising jazz artist Shelea Frazier are set to entertain music lovers in Nairobi and Mombasa.

The four, who will perform their widely celebrated A Gospel According to Jazz, will kick off their performances at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi on 3rd December before taking the show to Mombasa’s Haller Park on 5th December, in what will be the first performance of its kind in the coastal city since the launch of the Safaricom Jazz Lounge.

Kirk Whalum is famous for touring with the late Whitney Houston for seven years and for having had a solo part in her single “I will always love you”, the best-selling single by a female artist in music history.

He will be joined on stage by equally illustrious musician Gerald Albright, a multi-instrumentalist who has sold over one million albums in the United States of America alone.

Completing the ensemble will be Norman Brown – famous for his work with Boyz II Men and Stevie Wonder – and Shelea Frazier, a fast-rising singer, songwriter and producer who shot into the spotlight following her widely celebrated tribute to Whitney Houston.

“InFebruary we hosted over 10,000 jazz lovers at the Safaricom International Jazz Festival held at the Ngong Racecourse,and in August had the pleasure of bringing Salif Keita to Kenya for the Safaricom Jazz Lounge, so we see there is great demand for high quality live jazz music concerts,” said Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

“As a build-up to the 2016 edition of the Jazz Festival in February – where three-time Grammy Award Winner Branford Marsalis will perform – we are honoured to have the opportunity to have four of the best jazz musicians of our time joining us to usher in the festive season.”

Curtain-raising for the quartet will be Kenyan acts Edward Parseen and the Different Faces Band, and AfroSync, who have made their names in the Kenyan jazz scene thanks to their unique sounds.

“As has been the tradition with our jazz concerts, all proceeds from the Safaricom Jazz Lounge in both Nairobi and Mombasa, and the Safaricom International Jazz Festival, will go towards supporting the Korogocho-based Ghetto Classics music programme,” added Mr. Collymore.

Ghetto Classics offers music education to over 300 underprivileged youth, and has so far benefitted from an estimated Ksh.12 million raised through Safaricom’s jazz music properties.
