An exclusive Coke Studio Africa viewing party was held yesterday at the rooftop of Sankara Hotel.

The event was graced by the CSA Kenyan representatives Wangechi and Elani. The African Bantu Bamboo was also at the event which was Emceed by Homeboyz Radio presenter Mwalimu Rachel.

The same day “Reason” a special mash-up featuring NE-YO, Wangechi (Kenya), Alikiba (Tanzania), Maurice Kirya (Uganda), Dama Do Bling (Mozambique) and Ice Prince (Nigeria) was released.

Coke Studio Africa Season 3 which has been airing for the past two months tasked artists with a unique format of mash-ups.

Locally, the Kenyan artists who have featured in the show this season include Jua Cali who mashed up with Yemi Alade, Elani with Chidinma, Sauti Sol with Ice Prince and Avril with M.I.

Grammy Award winning musician and producer Zwai Bala of ground-breaking South African Kwaito group TKZee is the new show’s music director while Brett Lotriet, a renowned International TV director and producer is working as the series producer. The musicians along with a highly talented house band will this season present new tracks produced by both local and international producers.

Some of the producers include Jaaz Odongo, Eric Musyoka and Kevin Provoke from Kenya, Cobhams Asuquo, Masterkraft and Chopstix from Nigeria, Owour Arunga from USA, Nahreel from Tanzania and Silvastone from the UK. With this pool of music geniuses this show will take music production on the continent to a whole new level.

 

The passing of Alex and hospitalization of his friend Patricia the two kids famous for their dance in Eddy Kenzo’s Sitya Loss video affected the whole continent and the world.

One of the continent’s best footballers Emmanuel Adebayor on learning of the news quickly took to his social media accounts to express his sorrow and support for the family.

It was a sad week when news filtered in that everyone’s favorite children dancers Alex and Patricia were involved in a horrid accident which claimed Alex’s young and vibrant life.

Patricia, survived but was sustained serious injuries and was at one time admitted to the Intensive Care Unit before being moved to the normal ward after stabilizing. Eddy Kenzo and wife took care of her at the hospital and the couple expressed relief after the hospital discharged her.

One Enock Mwilu Mutunga from Sultan Hamud is wagging on people’s tongues after his brutal attack on his girlfriend, Irene Mueni, was exposed.

The barbaric man picked a fight with Irene last Sunday the 7^th Of December 2015 when the two were going back home after dropping their friend from Nairobi to a guest house.

Enock was arguing with a man he claimed was telling on him to his girlfriend about his philandering ways. Irene intervened and this was when her boyfriend flamed up with her.

The raging Enock ended up making a motorbike operator fall off when he tried to dislodge Irene from the bike when they were riding back home.

The drama escalated when they reached home. The violent knucklehead hit Irene’s baby who was being carried by a friend as he entered the house.

The girlfriend instructed the friend to take the baby and vanish when she noticed Enock’s demonic temper had hit boiling point.

He took an iron box and hit her before taking the umbrella and started stabbing her with it. He then undressed her and continued beating her up as he swore he would kill her.

Irene was bleeding intensely and she repeatedly begged her torturer to take her to hospital. Enock finally bulged to his girlfriend’s plea after she confirmed she wouldn’t sell him out.

She eventually reported the incident to Police at Sultan Hamud but the cops are yet to take action.

Many women take pregnancies for granted and we never really get to appreciate the miracle of childbirth as some women never get to see their babies. At some point, Pinky was one of those women who lost their babies to miscarriages.

Speaking to Ghafla, Pinky Ghelani discussed the difficulties she faced when trying to carry a child to term and how painful it was to lose her baby

Before she gave birth to her two babies, Pinky admits that she had a few miscarriages. Saying that her miscarriages grounded her as she used to think that it was her birthright as a woman to have a child and it helped her appreciate mother hood more.

“Motherhood has grounded me; it has helped me appreciate my life more. Makes me think about my actions and words because I am now molding, I am an example for the next generation.” She said.

And on her miscarriage, Pinky reveled that a tragedy of that kind “Affects you psychologically and emotionally .I lost my father aged 6, I lost my brother when I was 17. Having someone there and then not having them there, Is something I have learnt to deal with. This was again grieving; I had to grieve my unborn child.” She said.

Twitter bigwig, Cyprian Nyakundi, is concerned about corruption in Kenyan media. The blogger says some media personalities have built empires out of kickbacks.

Nyakundi hauled Julie Gichuru’s name in massive graft where he claimed the former Citizen TV news anchor was involved in media malpractice.

The blogger says Julie was paid millions of shillings to clean up a scam involving Ministries of Sports and Tourism.

He explains that Julie was hired to clean the mess by the two ministries which joined forces to launch ‘Kenya House’ during the 2012 London Olympics. Nyakundi says the failed project cost the country millions of shillings.

“As they campaign for a lifestyle audit on government officials, Some media personalities are swimming in a sea of riches made from Kickbacks . Kickbacks and the Kenyan media are two sides of the same coin. Do you remember when Swaleh Mdoe and Mwanahamisi were suspended after receiving a bribe from a flamboyant senator to Kill a story? That is one of the cases that Citizen tried to kill but in our dynamically changing digital space, hiding the truth is becoming a nightmare .

In 2012, the Ministries of Sports and Tourism combined efforts to launch what was referred to as “Kenya House” to run concurrently with the London 2012 Olympics, which costed the taxpayer hundreds of millions of shillings. To clean up the scam, Julie Gichuru was paid millions of shillings host events and televise from Kenya House, even though no meaningful benefit accrued from the expensive undertaking.” Nyakundi wrote in part.

Roba was once a member of the hottest Kenyan trio to hit the kapuka and hip hop scene. The Kleptomaniax were a force to reckon with when it came to dance-floor anthems and party starters. Together with his brothers in crime, Nyash and Collo, Roba was part of a group that made musical history thanks to a consistent supply of game changing songs.

Apart from the good, the Kleptomaniax also got their fair share of industry beefs with people like Bamboo and the group FBI that took aim at their Kapuka selections. The response? An anthem for days that took form in the song ‘Tuendele’ a response to all that looked down on their approach to music.

Also known for mega hits such as ‘Haree’ and the ‘Maniax Anthem’, the group had an unstoppable run and even though Nyash left the group, the remaining duo kept the run Solid.

Roba reflects on what took place:

Molo: Who came up with the name Kleptomaniax for the group?

Roba: I did.

Molo: Ogopa Deejays was your first musical home, how was it like working there in the early 2000’s?

Roba:It was wonderful. Considering that this was where we cut our teeth, were still very young, and had pressure to be the best, it was challenging. I love challenges. Of course there were normal ups and downs like in any other work environment, but it was great. I appreciate and give thanks toLucas, Francis, Banda and our manager at that time Fakii, who all made sure we remained grounded despite it all in order to achieve all that we did.

Molo: It has been 11 years since the song ‘Tuendelee’ came out, people call it the best response ever, and how was the song made?

Roba: I am grateful to the response it continuesto receive to date. I believe most of our songs will remain classics. Our musicis not just about the hype, it comes from the heart. Tuendelee was actually not intended to be a reply to any so called diss. It was in fact, recorded before the so called ‘diss euphoria.’If we were to actually sit-in and do a well planned diss, with insults like many of those disses had, careers would have ended. Kleptomaniax was not about that. That is not Hip Hop. Hip Hop is love. There are those moments in art where coincidences of the art to surrounding events just happen. It just came out at a time when there was pressure in the industry and the mood of the game at that time, was competitiveand the media being the media, of course ran with it.

Molo: What made your group leave Ogopa Deejays?

Roba:To progress, one must grow. Each one of us had other personal plans, dreams, goals and ambitions in life we wanted to achieve apart from the group. We left the nest to explore experience and grow.

Molo: What was it like when Nyash decided to leave the group? What made you guys continue?

Roba: Nyashinskihas never left the group. Like I said, we each had personal agendas in life to achieve. He had to travel abroad for his. He is and has always been part and parcel of our work as a group. We are brothers. Music however, just like life, continues.

Molo: You and Collo created a great working relationship with Ulopa Ngoma, with songs like ‘Magnetic’, what was it like working with him?

Roba: Ulopa is talented both as a producer and singer. I met him way before he was known as a producer. In 2007, I and he started working on a number of unreleased singles, aiming to sharpen our artistic edges. It is not until 2009 that the three of us started working on the album NITT (Now Is The Time) that has the likes of Magnetic, Psycho, etc. It was fun.

Molo: Is Kleptomaniax dead? Will we ever get another album?

Roba: Kleptomaniax never died in the first place. About another album…raise your expectation levels.

Molo: What is it like being a solo artiste now?

Roba:I am now under my own record label called Musiq Plantat Epren Center, Buru-Buru Nairobi which I co-own, under the Plant Media Company umbrella. My executive producerhappens to bemy elder brother Paul Bruce aka Doc Spot. He was in fact featured in Klepto’s very first original single “freak it” which was our very first song while still in High school. He has done a number of great works polishing up talents and even brought some in the industry. He has worked with talents like L-Ness, Judge, Chief Chef, Safi Chafu, K-Force, Alfayo, Bilari, Wyre, Kalahari, Shavey n Slice etc just to mention but a few. As a solo artiste, it is much more challenging, but as I said, I love challenges, as there is more room for creativity, experimentation and growth. There is a lot more to try and learn.

Molo: How has your music changed over the years? What new material can fans expect from you?

Roba: I am much more conscious in what I put in my lyrics. At the same time I am real with myself and with what I do and put out there. I am no longer carefree with my content. Being a father, I must be sensible and cautious of what I put outsince my kidstoday are actually my number one fans. My new music is simple, but strives to inspire, motivate and direct. Listen deeply, keenly, meditate and understand.

Molo: Who are your favorite Kenyan artistes?

Roba:There are many, but most of my favorite artistes are not yet even on the mainstream. We are working on and with them. There is tremendous untapped potential from where I stand. It is my dream and hope that I will gain a voice loud enough to expose them and bring them to light to also shine.

Molo: What have been the highlights of your career?

Roba:Being the very first nominees in Kenyan history of the prestigious MTV EMA awards and among the first in Africa, the numerous nominations andawards, from Kisima, Chaguo la Teeniez, Channel O awards, Pearl awards, Kora, Kilimanjaro awards, to travelling across the world touring, US (26 states), UK, Asia, etc. It has been a rollercoaster ride.

Molo:What are 5 things you still need to do as a musician?

Roba:1. To bring up and bring out more talent

I have never heard of any secular artist going to perform in Churches. But gospel musicians performing at nightclubs, it’s a norm. Only that this time round ‘walokole’ will be storming a CBD club in their numbers.

Times have really changed, gospel artists performing at entertainment hotspots where revelers are drinking and pulling weird behaviors, is now not an eyesore.

Since the CBD is short of churches, a total of 11 secular musicians masquerading as gospel artists, opted to host their event at a popular revving destination in town.

The 11 will be thronging the dope nightclub to headline a gig dubbed ‘Gospel Xmas’.

Bahati ignited fire and now he’s standing from a safe distance watching the raging inferno consume everything within its path!

The ‘Kuchukuchu’ hit maker attracted the nation’s attention when he indirectly said Daddy Owen used and dumped blind gospel singer Denno.

In a long tirade that he wrote on social media, Bahati claimed he couldn’t comprehend how Denno was languishing in abject poverty yet ‘Mbona’ (a song by Daddy Owen which he featured Denno) was a big hit that generated lots of revenue.

The young gospel singer further claimed he opted to do a collabo with Denno instead of giving him money to start a small business.

Last weekend saw quite a unique show staged by a couple of artistes.

The event organized by Sauti Academy,Penya Africa and the Institute of Development Studies was meant to talk about topics hardly discussed. It saw performances of 15 unique songs revolving around love, sex and relationships.

Artistes performed on themes ranging from ‘dry spells’ to rape and responsibility in relationships. The event was aptly dubbed Love Matters Music Awards saw performances mixing both song and dance.

There was also an award for the best song. The Judges award was taken by Omari with the song Dot Com and the People’s Choice was taken by Helena with the song Hold My Hand.

According to the Centre of Disease Control (CDC) each year worldwide, approximately 14 million are diagnosed with cancer with 8 million people succumbing to the disease. The number itself is astounding!

In Kenya’s media industry 2 people have been diagnosed with cancer, Janet Kanini Ikua of NTV and Anjlee Gadvi , A K24 senior reporter.

Now a famed journalist and author of the book “Invisible – Stories from Kenya’s Queer Community“ has been diagnosed with a type of blood cancer- called Multiple Myeloma that occurs in the plasma cells of the bone marrow causing his plasma cells to become malignant and in turn weakened his bones. A disease that has prevented him from engaging in his favorite activity: running.This is because his spine has been weakened by the disease and he has been forced to wear a corset to protect his spine.

 

He says that unlike Janet, his cancer was caught in the middle stages and he has just completed his first round of chemotherapy and is expected to continue going for the procedure for at least another six months.He will then need to an autologous stem cell transplant and then more chemotherapy.

“ My treatment is going well so far, although it’s going to be a long journey to recovery. I am on oral treatment and receive a weekly injection. I’ve developed a new respect for medicine and my body. The chemo has and will continue to throw surprises at it. My body is dealing with so much right now and I have to spur it on and listen to it more in order to help it fight and recover.

Looking ahead, the autologous stem cell transplant can only be done outside the country. That’s why we are running this campaign to raise money to cover the cost of the medication and surgery. Unfortunately, with the high cost of cancer treatment, I have to cover a part of the costs myself. My insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of treatment.

Since the diagnosis, I’ve been overwhelmed by the support that I have received from family and friends. I’ve had messages of encouragement and prayers from all quarters! These have left me speechless many, many times.

I like to describe myself as a storyteller. I believe that through my journalistic work, I am a custodian of peoples’ stories. I love stories of people. I think they have power. They plant something good within us. Little did I know that, I too, would one day be the subject of a story. My story.

The cortege will then leave Chiromo mortuary next Thursday, the 18th of December at 8.00 a.m for a funeral service at A.I.C Milimani Church. He will then be laid to rest on the 19^th of December at his late father’s farm in K’Obong’o village, Onjiko Location,Nyando Constituency in Kisumu County.

He was previously called out by a friend turned foe for being “broke and disrespectful”

There’s currently a legion of aspiring female artistes, models and fashion bloggers who think they’ll be superstars. The truth is that they never will be. I feel sad for these girls who are simply playing to what is popular rather than curving a path of their own. The best they will do in life is light up for a short while like a candle flame then go out. Yes you model and fashion blogger, the best you will ever do is get hundreds of Instagram likes, appear in Pulse or another magazine that just want s to quickly fill its pages and that’s it. For you the female artiste, the best you will ever manage is two hit songs (if you are lucky) and a few gigs and that’s it.

Hey, I am not trying to be misogynistic or discriminatory against females in the entertainment industry. I am just trying to be helpful because y’all are getting lost.

I am talking about ratchet female artistes like Noti Flow, Kush Tracey plus a bunch of other unknown twenty something singers who release album after album without a single hit. Artistes who get lied to by producers and get used like s*x slaves. I am talking about models who refuse to attend classes and prefer go for phototshoot after photoshoot while getting paid token incomes in return. Models who will continue sucking ‘D’ after ‘D’ while being promised glory that will never come. I am talking about fashion bloggers who think that since they managed to pick the best clothes out of a huge bunch in Gikomba, the whole world would love to see them wear it.

Majority of upcoming female models and artistes have gotten everything so wrong. Hunny, just because you are pretty doesn’t mean you should be a model. Just because some guy said you have a sexy voice doesn’t mean you should go to the studio. Ladies that are misleading themselves and being misled all at the same time. I know that the entertainment industry sounds fun and less stressful than more traditional professions but it really is the other way round

I understand how hopeful you are. Someone told you to follow your passion. But positivity will get you nowhere unless it is utilized along consistent doses of reality. .The industry is harsh to females who only have themselves to blame. They are the architects of their own downfall.

So let me get this straight Miss female artist. You think doing rejoinders and yelling how you are a bad b*tch will make you a superstar? B*tch poliiiiiiiiz!!!You think squeezing your voice through average songs in the name of singing and making an album, will make you a sellout? Sorry, it won’t.

Gone are the days when women used to release authentic music that reminiscently revolved around their lives, motherhood, occasional vulnerability and heartbreak, often at the hands of callous good-for-nothing badboys. Their songs were fresh and inspiring. They reverberated with truth, because the singers broadcasted the message with honest self-appraisal instead of posturing feminism.

Upcoming female artistes are different. They sing or rap with the sole aim of being famous. They make ratchetness and man-hating propaganda a focal point of their songs. They ape and co-opt the caricatured masculine themes of promiscuity, emotional distance and middle finger majesty, without any form of poetic discordance in feelings or slipped confessions of humility. You will never make it bishes. Never

To the upcoming fashion bloggers who have no idea how to be at the top of your field, I wish you would open your eyes. The likes of Sylvia Njoki and This Is Ess will continue running circles around the rest of you all and grabbing all the recognition. Every time I see fashion blog post, I become half tempted to comment and call the chic out for her ridiculousness. But I am man with a good heart. Good luck ladies
