Over the weekend,something tragic and very unexpected dominated the blogosphere… A marriage that seemed to have been built on the most everlasting of precious rocks came tumbling down,at high speed,and the protagonists,themselves huge media personalities in Kenya,were increasingly becoming unable to stop the powerful tide of schism that snaps up many a modern marriages. All this is yet to be fully confirmed though.
From the beginning,the union between the amiable,chubby-faced KTN news anchor and the hard-nosed,NTV investigative sleuth seemed to be destined to nothing but greatness. Or something beyond greatness.
She was the charming,very intelligent and highly affable girl that made millions watch KTN even making her News Show ‘Friday Briefing’ become one of the only shows on KTN that crossed the million-man mark viewership. And he was the no-nonsense,enigmatic NTV investigate gumshoe who often poked his nose in the riskiest of holes and made many forays into the dirty and murky world of a Society gone wrong,captivating us with his thorough pieces most Sunday evenings.
No one would have guessed that these brilliant television stars were even in love in the first place,leave alone contemplating divorce less than a year after they had tied the notch in a grandiose,fairytale wedding that shamed all weddings of 2015.
But it soon would be discovered that things were not as blissful and as tranquil as those breathtaking wedding – and honeymoon – photos lead us into believing.
According to an authoritative bombshell dropped by a local blog,there soon emerged cracks in one of the fanciest and most incredible marriages of our age.
There were the usual claims -and counter claims- of cheating,domestic abuse,arrogance,stubbornness and an inability to settle into a two-person Union.
Neither Betty Kyalo nor Dennis Okari,who back in January,spiritedly and angrily defended her from a marauding Prezzo,confirmed or denied the story.
Both sides actually went mum. Not just on that particular issue but also across Social Media, avoiding,as much as possible,to post about each other as often as they once would.
The gushing was gone. PDAs were gone. Yes,even those come-hither tweets that would so enrage jealous Twitter users were gone.
But Betty and Okari (if the reports are to be believed) are really not something new.
We’ve seen and witnessed way too many relationship dramas involving our female TV stars that we’re not getting used to the news.
There was Willis Raburu who,even after massively proposing to a stunned Sally Mbilu back in 2014,sliding some 100,000 worth of precious stones down her finger,ended up calling off his engagement to his co-worker and fellow Citizen TV fixture.
And then of course you will remember Lilian Muli whose ostentatious wedding to Moses Njuguna Kanene ended up in a snap divorce even before the couple had finished unwrapping the wedding gifts. She would then drop her last name ‘Kanene’ and publicly stop Jeff Koinange from associating her with it.
Cynthia Nyamai too is a case in point. The former news anchor got married in 2007,but would end up divorced a petty three years later leaving tabloid-worthy scandals in their wake. Her ex-hubby Makuyu would then start a media tour discrediting her and what she would claim about him.
The Esther Arunga (another TV goddess) debacle needs no introduction. It unfurled right in front of our curious eyes,culminating in a dramatic crescendo of mental insanity,cultic allegiances,verbal incoherencies and general erratic behavior. And ultimate gloom.
But why can’t our TV girls keep a man? Or rather,why can’t a man keep a TV girl?

1. Schedules
TV girls tend to have very tight schedules that need them to be in the office as late as 11pm or past midnight working on a story,editing some lengthy feature,leaving the office late after reading the 9pm news basically getting entangled in many other activities that are strenuous and demanding. She has to beat deadlines,finish a story,compile a feature and generally execute her television duties without regard to the time or day. And therefore,having a wife (or girlfriend) who spends all her time at the office,coming home late and not even ever having time off to hang out with you,bond and probably go for a weekend getaway can be taxing and very unhealthy for a relationship to grow and a marriage to flourish.
2. Philandering
It has been proven and reported that many TV girls (Like another one I won’t mention here) are simple,basic ratchet hoes who will sleep with the next guy at the slightest invitation. Some TV girls are known to go for mega rich businessmen and politicians while some others (and I know I certain ka-story) even sleep and prostitute themselves with anyone nor matter their social rank or income. I know a very gorgeous TV girl who had a very steamy weekend with a camera man she barely even knew on one media house trip to Eldoret. These girls can be very promiscuous,treacherous and wily. And also very huge consumers of the D.
3. Ego
Most of these TV girls have had their egos bloated by the glowing press coverage and blog mentions they receive on the daily and then end up imagining they are Madonna or Barbara Streisand. They join the media house all humble and sweet… And then they quickly graduate to the status of ‘Celebrity’ and then,all of a sudden, they develop an ego,stop talking to regular media guys at the hallway,start feeling all sweet and important and then end up transporting that stupid ego and conceitedness into the relationship thus damaging it irreparably. They become hard to pin down,hard to reach compromises with and basic spolit divas who will not be boxed into a challenging relationship opting to leave and save themselves the ‘Undiva’ drama. These bastards!
4. Salary Salary Salary
It’s public knowledge that some TV girls earn an upwards of Ksh. 500,000 per month just for sitting pretty,dressing provocatively and mumbling a local news roundup at 9pm. Such a salary can fool and blind many a woman into believing that she’s got it all,she has her act together, she’s settled and financially safe and therefore,she doesn’t exactly need a man. She thinks, ‘I ain’t sitting here,with all this money,trying to deal with some knavish bastard,I’ve got money,not time. He’s gotta go…’ and with that,she lets go of the union. And moves on very swiftly,to read more news,dress even less and earn even more. Money money money.
5. Stubbornness
They’re glitzy,they’re all glam,they’re gorgeous,they’re fancy, they’re pampered and think they’re Queens. What would stop them from being stubborn!? Hard-headed? Hard to deal with? And disobedient? She doesn’t want to be the one cooking for him. Or washing his under wear. Or having to pick his shoes and dust them. She doesn’t want to wake up past midnight to open the door for him. Or warm that meal for him. And definitely isn’t here to be used and boxed into the Kitchen. She’s a horrible cook anyway. The archetypal City Girl. Stubborn,fussy,prudish,impertinent,cold.
6. Boredom
Marriage can be boring. Stiff boring. Dating can wear you off too and leave you all lethargic and dry. Given the life she lives,the TV girl isn’t going to be sitting her pretty TV ass all day putting up with all the boredom surrounding her and oozing from her man. Mostly,they marry and date for publicity and for media coverage. And when the attention starts waning,when their love affair stops attracting any more news and making the headlines,she’s bored. She’s over it. She’s had a good time and is ready to move on swiftly. And she does it very fast. She’s done with the union even before the cake crumbs have been swept off from the wedding venue.
