TV Personality Jeff Koinange Submerged in Ruto’s ICC Case

Tuesday, the trial of Kenya’s Deputy President, William Ruto, kicked off at Hague-based court, ICC with his defence team tabling its evidence. Part of the evidence interestingly relied on Jeff Koinange’s former TV show on K24, The Bench.

Ruto’s lawyer, Karim Khan heavily relied on a recording of the show in which Jeff interviewed the DP (then Eldoret North MP) to prove that his client is innocent.

The TV personality now with Arise TV could not hide his excitement after the clip formed basis of the DP’s defence as one of his followers joked that he should be made an ‘amicus curiae’ of ICC as he retweeted tweets about his former show on Twitter.

Here are some tweets from yesterday;

Here Is A Profile Of Journalist Joshua Sang’s Lawyer: Joseph Katwa Kigen

From the get go, I have to say that I have been rather interested in Joshua Sang’s case. The I.C.C has gone on record as saying that he along with his co-accused William Samoei Ruto who is the deputy president of the Republic of Kenya are behind the worst of the Post election Violence!

Apart from that, another interesting fact is that Sang is the only defendant to retain Kenyan citizens as his primary legal team. And i found myself wondering who this is that Joshua sang has placed so much trust in… Given that the courts were willing to provide him with a legal team if he couldn’t retain one.

And the man he selected is:

Joseph Katwa Kigen

Nationality: Kenyan

Ethnicity: Kalenjin

Legal training: University of Nairobi

Admission to the Bar: 1996

Previous work experience: Nyairo and Co. Advocates

                                         Kibet and Co. Advocates

                                         Ochieng’, Onyango, Kibet and Ohaga Advocates

Kagwa has experience in handling legal matters pertaining to commercial transactions having done so for various local banks and financial institutions, manufucturing and general business companies as well as cooperatives.

in addition to that, he has handled arbitration, corporate governance law issues, succession and divorce, land law and criminal defence.

He however specializes in conveyancing, bank security documentation, debt recovery and civil litigation.

Retired Politician Gitobu Imanyara Hollas At Citizen TV’s Screen Siren on Twitter

In September last year, Citizen TV brought on board two screen sirens that had the blogosphere buzz louder than 1000 bees. One of the two screen beauties was Alice Odera.

Her splendour and grandeur left everyone (#TeamMafisi, leading the pack) dumbfounded and drooling whenever she appeared on the TV screen to read the Business News. And just to prove that, she has over 5000 followers on Twitter, most of them dudes trying to keep tabs on her.

On the other hand, Alice has been pretty active tweeting and retweeting. And now, thanks to her numerous retweets, she has been discovered by retired politician and prolific lawyer, Gitobu Imanyara. Earlier today, the ex-politician revealed how impressed he is with Alice for retweeting his tweets and asked her to text him.

Gitobu Imanyara tweet

This tweet elicited reactions from KOT who didn’t shy away from letting known their views about the tweet. Here are some;

He went ahead to cite examples of these “filled up” women and he did not flinch to mention radio presenters and TV personalities Kaleklye Mumo and Sheila Mwanyiga.

‘Makmende’ As A Child.

In March 2010 Kenyan music group Just A Band released a video for their hit song Ha-He and featured a guy called Makmende whose Kung-Fu skills enabled him to single-handedly face the city’s most feared criminal.

His fashion sense from the 70’s that included bell bottomed pants a huge Afro and Chuck Norris like fighting skillsskills  made him a huge hit on the internet and Kenya’s first viral video and memes were born .

One blogger, Archer, (mwanamishale.wordpress.com )explains: “Makmende was a term used way back in the early to mid 1990s to refer to someone who thought he was a super hero. For example, if a boy who had watched one too many kung-fu movies on TV decided to unleash his newly acquired combat skills, he would be asked, “Unajidai Makmende, eh?” (Who do you think you are, Makmende?)!”

The role of makmende was played by one Kevin Maina whose antics in the video made him a household name.Here is a picture of  a young ‘Makmende’

Hot New Track: ‘Slap Them Like Kidero’ Featuring Dr. Kidero & Shebesh

As if the trolling on Facebook and Twitter wasn’t not enough following Friday’s incident in which Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero smacked Women Representative Rachel Shebesh, Kenyans have now gone a step further and dropped a track depicting the events that led to the ‘gubernatorial slap’.

Complete with the slap sound effect, this track is by far the best done by S.N.L Kenya.

It’s only in Kenya where serious matters can be turned into the biggest joke. All bull aside, this track is seriously sidesplitting.

S.N.L (Stunnr’ New Limits)is a movement of Kenyan producers who are proud workaholics and perfectionists specializing in house and techno beats, set to shape the genre in the region with their parody tracks.

Below is the track;

Maina And King’angi In The Morning ‘Why Did You Marry Her?’

Maina and Kingangi’s morning show is usually interesting  but today it was especially interesting though really alarming .Maina was asking his listeners to contribute to the topic ‘Why did you marry her?’

I have to admit if found some of the answers given a tad appalling to say the least.It is like the institution of marriage is no longer the sacred union it once was!Call me old-fashioned but I believe that if you have to get married do it because you love someone,not because society has pressured you or you find her thighs appealing as some guy revealed.

Others went ahead and said that their women’s faces looked like ‘Mkebe imekanyagwa na Lori’another said that the wife looks like an ‘avocado peel’.Another bragged that his wife is just his sex tool! Really?Is this what marriage has come to?Tune in to Classic 105 and get this and more

Mombasa Road-Based Media House Fires Top Employees!

Journalists in Kenya have seen better years,2013 has really not been their year.We have all witnessed the sacking of journalists in masses left right and center.

First it was K24 that kicked out its poached journalists,Kiss TV quickly followed suit sacking over seventy of its employees.Mombasa based radio Salaam was hot on the heels of Kiss TV and fired over 15 of its employees.

According to Jackal news, The Standard has forced two of its major employees to close shop and call it a day.The ones in the line of fire are Standard’s Group’s editorial director Bernard Nderitu and his managing director Neema Wamai.

Shameless editorial changes at the Standard mask a futile quest to get plumbers to fix a leak, only watch them flood the house

This has come barely an year after Nderitu was appointed amidst controversy  to give the Mombasa based media house a new lease of life  .The reason for their firing  is unclear and very unfortunate especially now that living in Kenya after the VAT bill  has become a daunting task.

Shock As Kenrazy is Killed By the Internet!

It’s a fact: We all spend too much time on the Internet. With so much time, it’s inevitable that there are angels of death hovering around and the Internet becomes convinced a living celebrity has suddenly died. Thanks to Facebook, the latest celebrity death hoax is only a couple ‘Shares’ away from hitting gossip sites.

Yesterday afternoon, Kenrazy was given a dose of death in his celebrity hoax as the Internet tried killing the Ghipuka artist but terribly backfired as it was contained just in time. The rumour-mill was awash with news that the “Vitambi” singer had passed on under unclear circumstances.

Kenrazy’s record stable, Grandpa Records, moved in quickly to allay the reports terming them as malicious and unfounded.

Sources indicated that as the rumours quickly spread, the lyricist was in the studio recording his next hit. Apparently, there was an individual inboxing random guys on Facebook telling them that Kenrazy is no more.

Ordinarily, when the online blood-seekers want to try and hoax-kill a celebrity, they make do with promoting the star’s death on just one social network; the same thing that happened in Kenrazy’s case.

Media Mogul Chris Kirubi Reveals the Source of His Extensive Wealth (Part II)

On his journey to success, he has failed a couple of times but that did not deter him from what he wanted to achieve in life. He got up and moved on and never has he looked back.

Here’s the second part of his journey to success;

Going Social

His involvement in Capital FM took Kirubi into the brave new world of digital media, which has captured him completely. “This to me is a very exciting world. I have about three million hits a day on Capital FM. The future is new media. It is instant, it is specific and everybody can talk to everybody else. New media is very fast. You are not waiting for news at 10 at night,” he says. “Businesses have to change. They have to see communication as a major issue. They have to understand who is saying what about them, and to be aware of negatives and correct them, or their businesses will disappear beneath them without them knowing what is going on. [New media] has brought customers to the forefront. People have the power now to communicate.”

Kirubi’s use of social media and his show on Capital, which he presents as DJ CK, have raised his public profile as an outspoken advocate for entrepreneurism and entrepreneurs. His Twitter account (@CKirubi) has nearly 100,000 followers, many of whom use the hashtag #AskKirubi to solicit his guidance.

Entrepreneurial Flair

“Yes, I engage with many aspiring entrepreneurs. In fact, I have always advocated for self employment as a means to curb the skyrocketing unemployment levels in Kenya. Young people shouldn’t just wait to get absorbed into the formal employment sector but must look at alternative ways of generating income,” Kirubi says.

According to Kirubi, the issues that keep young entrepreneurs awake at night include cash flow, access to financing, competition in the market and the market’s relative demand for their offerings. At least, those are the issues they frequently ask him about. “What I always assure them is that for the most part, there is nothing new under the sun. Your proposition is not a ‘eureka’ one. It is more likely an offshoot of an old solution adapted to evolving challenges. As such, many other people have gone before you and encountered the same problems. One of the best ways to counter these problems is to get a business mentor and if possible, allow yourself to be incubated until you feel you can stand on your own two feet.”

Online mentoring allows Kirubi to combine two of his passions: entrepreneurism and Kenyan youth. “There is much that I do behind the scenes but I remain most passionate about young people,” he says. “In fact, I have made it my life’s mission to belong to them. For me this means understanding how young people think, what matters to them and seeing how best I can influence positive change. The truth is that ‘youth’ remains a most sought-after commodity – but it is also a very trying time because they have not quite concretised their identity. I am passionate about inspiring them to become who they want to be, in line with what matters to them. There are no limits to what they can perceive and consequently achieve.”

Kirubi looks to global business icons for his own inspiration. “I am inspired by successful moguls like Richard Branson and Donald Trump,” he says. “These are individuals who are able to overcome their own personal hurdles, actively seek out new territories to conquer and actually excel despite others not believing in them. They are unconventional in their thinking and lifestyle, take huge risks and as a result have created huge empires from their personal brands. I identify most with them but I am also very driven. In my personal life, I am inspired by my family and the fact that I have this talent, for which I must be an excellent steward. I do not take my abilities for granted.”

Where to Next?

Will he ever retire, I ask? “Retire to what, madam?” he answers. “I don’t go on holiday. I am always on holiday. I believe in working. I love my job, I love what I do –that’s my life.”

Chris_Kirubi_Cess_Mutungi.jpg

Motivated by his ongoing opportunity to transform Kenya’s economic landscape, Kirubi says he wakes up every day and asks himself what he can do to make his country the place of his dreams. “As a member of the original team tasked with putting together Vision 2030, I was inspired by the possibilities of what we could become, and this vision still motivates me to date. I want to be at the centre of positive change in Kenya, regionally and beyond. I want the world to know that when something good happens in Africa, it is not by accident. We have put in more than a fair share of personal and collective effort. It is Africa’s turn to rise and shine.”

INTERVIEW: Columnist & Editor Carol Odero Talks to Redd’s About Kenyan Fashion

Redd’s Kenya recently launched a new variant to their portfolio, Redd’s Vodka Lemon. They also sponsored the recently concluded Kenya Fashion week, where they interviewed noted fashion journalist, Carol Odero. Read it below.

REDD’S Kenya: Who is Carol Odero?

Carol Odero: I’m Carol Odero, editor DRUM magazine for the past two and a half years, and fashion and beauty journalist and columnist for Sunday Nation Lifestyle for well over six years. My job, each day, aspires to direct people to embrace not just fashion, but style. To find and define themselves with every aspect of their life, and to celebrate that, and enjoy it.

REDD’S Kenya: Any quote you live by?

Carol Odero: Every day is a Sunday, best day.

REDD’S Kenya: Your take on Fashion in Kenya

Carol Odero: I’ve seen Kenyan fashion grow immensely in less than a decade. It has moved from a lull into something so vibrant and colourful, there now exist opportunities that there never were before. 10 years ago, you couldn’t tell anyone you were a stylist with a straight face. Now newspapers, TV, print, radio and even online publications have stylists. Fashion blogging has emerged, and there are people who make a living out of it. We are celebrating up and coming designers, and fashion is not just about glamour anymore. It is becoming a business. I do wish we pushed the envelope more, harder, further. We are timid with our choices and that not only slows down the growth of the industry, it deprives us the ability to define what exactly Kenyan fashion should be.

REDD’S Kenya: Your career tips?

Carol Odero: I hate to be cliché, but I am a firm believer in following your bliss. I never expected fashion to be such a key part of my life. It was something I enjoyed, and style informed everything I did. Now, it is what, and who, I am most identified as! Your ‘hobby’ or interests can turn the axis of your life on its head.

Redd’s Vodka Lemon is a premium, iconic and first-class ready to drink beverage for confident and extroverted individuals. The launch of the new product into the Kenyan market came from the need to provide variety to the consumers and promote growth in the industry.

The Sad Truth About Journalist Joshua Sang’s I.C.C Case!

Everyone in Kenya is following the proceedings at the Hague with bated breathe. The outcome of this case could determine the course of Kenya’s future as as such, Kenyans; mighty and low, big and small, Kenyans of all creed and colour are paying close attention to the I.C.C trial for the blood shed that occurred back in 2007/2008.

But have you spared a thought for Joshua sang or are you only concerned for the two principles on trial: Uhuru Kenyatta, the 4th president of the Republic of Kenya  and his deputy William Ruto?

One thing that hasn’t escaped my keen eye is the rapidity with which key witnesses are refusing to co-operate with the I.C.C prosecuter Bensouda, preferring instead to withdraw their evidence.
Except in Joshua Sang’s case. the witnesses are still intact and willing to testify.

Other than that biting difference, did you see how the deputy president was received at the Hague? No?

Meanwhile, Joshua Sang’s arrival was low key and unimportant. And to add to this the fact thet Joshua sang supported Raila Odinga for the presidency only for his opponent and fellow Post Election Violence suspect uhuru Kenyatta to emerge triumphant…

Joshua Sang’s is a sad tale of being lonely even while in the company of others!

Media Mogul Chris Kirubi Reveals the Source of His Extensive Wealth

Chris Kirubi is one man whose calls are picked by heads of States, thanks to the respect and financial muscle he has developed over the years. The media mogul is the muse for Ventures Africa magazine’s August/September issue.

Striking a fierce pose, the Capital FM and Haco Industries owner speaks candidly on his wealth and his promising future.

“My success is Kenya’s success”, he tells the mag.

Here’s his story;

Dr. Chris Kirubi is the quintessential Kenyan entrepreneur. A self-made businessman, he rose from poverty to create a multi-million dollar empire of property, investment, manufacturing and media companies. Today, he is well-known both in Kenya and internationally. Kirubi is the chairman and a shareholder of Haco Tiger Brands (a joint venture with Tiger Brands SA, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange). He is also CEO of Capital FM and holds large equity stakes in Nairobi Stock Exchange listed investment firm Centum, UAP Insurance and the Kenyan franchise of DHL. Furthermore, he is a shareholder in Nairobi Bottlers, a bottling franchise for Coca-Cola.

Kirubi is remarkably taciturn about his past. “There is not much history. I was born a poor boy – an ordinary peasant, I would say. My parents passed on when I was young. But I was lucky to have people who supported my education,” he says. His first jobs helped him develop a sense of selfreliance. “When I was in school I worked during holidays to help myself and my brothers. My work experience therefore started many years ago. It builds confidence. It gives you experience as well. It teaches you at a very early stage how to take care of yourself. You learn a lot of discipline – how to manage your time, how to be transparent – and this was a good base for doing my own business. I apply this to whatever I do.”

Chris_Kirubi_Ventures_Magazine_Issue_5.jpg

After high school, Kirubi took up his first formal job with Shell as a sales rep. He moved swiftly through his graduate studies and positions in the pharmaceutical industry, the automotive industry and government before deciding to begin a new journey.

Building on a Property Foundation

That journey began with property development. Kirubi owns one of Kenya’s most iconic buildings, the International House in Nairobi – namesake and headquarters of International House Limited, his property investment firm. “Property was one of the easiest things to try to get into,” Kirubi explains. “Properties were not expensive as they are now. Today in Kenya it is almost impossible to buy. Back then, if you had a friend in the bank to support you it was easy to buy these assets. I used to buy neglected properties, do them up and flog them in the market. It was an area that there were not many people involved in, and it was a very profitable venture.”

Does he believe property is the backbone of his success? Not strictly. “It was a combination but property was where I began. I started on a good footing,” he says. “I was asked by a company to partner with them in manufacturing writing implements and was also trading with a Dutch company. But I got involved with the Dutch company because the MD stayed in one of my properties. We got to know each other and became good friends. With International House, I worked for [the insurance company that was headquartered there]. I used to sell policies and when they decided to close down their offices in Kenya, they offered me the opportunity to buy the building and supported me in talking to the banks and off we went. So property was always the foundation.

More Ups than Downs

From there, Kirubi built a diversified empire, and recalls only one defeat – a paint industries business. But even on the topic of failure, Kirubi is characteristically upbeat. “I didn’t understand the routes to market and couldn’t gain ground against the giants in the sector. But I learnt: you fail, you get up and you walk. You move on. I had the proceeds from the assets and some land that I still hold, so it wasn’t a total disaster,” he says.

His successes have been plentiful and on this point Kirubi can afford to be a little philosophical. “Success for me is not enumerated in wealth,” he says. “I have come to discover that money and material things are never quite sufficient; the goal post always shifts when you get there.” He returns to his typical pragmatism: “Success means being able to accomplish the goals I have set out for myself. If, for example, I have a goal to build a state-of-theart property, success comes in small doses. It is in seeing the milestones we have achieved with completion of every construction step and finally being able to open up the building for occupation. More so, it extends to having a 100-percent occupancy rate of satisfied clients. When that happens, I can say I feel successful in that angle.”

His biggest success, he believes, was his transition from a position of poverty to that of employer, shepherding himself ”from the very poor world to a world where I am able to create jobs and create opportunities” for fellow Kenyans. “My success is Kenya’s success. I have lots of people working for me in the various companies I have. From being poor, I am now a job creator, creating lives for other people.”

Managed Interventions

Kirubi has developed a reputation for turning around failing businesses, Capital FM being an exemplary case. “Capital FM was almost dead. They were not paying their bills, the staff was demotivated. It was struggling in the market place,” Kirubi says. “But I saw an opportunity. I realised that what was missing was focused management. The company was concentrating on a narrow band of expat listenership.”

The beleaguered radio station might not have seemed a viable investment to many, but to Kirubi it was an opportunity. “I like buying things that are not well managed and turning them round, because I know the one thing I can put into a business is management. Within a few years, we turned it around, widened the base of listenership, brought in younger Kenyans to be presenters and I myself went on air – I got involved to make sure that people had contact with me.”

The opportunity was twofold. “I really thank Capital very much because I had lots of products to promote and I was paying a lot of money in advertising. So I thought, why don’t I buy the media itself?” he says jovially, before adding on a serious note: “It became my life. When you get into media, it’s hard to get out.”

A Diversified Portfolio

How has he managed to build success in so many diverse sectors? “Regardless of the sector, being successful requires first and foremost that you understand your market,” he answers. “When I first got into media, I faced numerous challenges in trying to understand the market, its needs, the skills required and the peculiarities of the industry. I had to do my research and practically submerge myself in the industry by becoming a DJ in order to understand the market. Only then could I make proper and effective decisions.”

Chris_Kirubi.jpg

Knowing your market is just one item on a shopping list of attributes and virtues that Kirubi feels help create success. “You need to have a vision, be passionate about it, build a credible brand and have tenacity, especially when the trials seem to be more than the successes,” he advises. “Obviously this list is not exhaustive but success requires you to put in hard work.”

Fast-Rising Gospel Artiste Comes Out To Defend Boss of MOG for Soliciting For Sex from a Groupie

One half of the new kids on the gospel block Linka from the duo Moody & Linka has come out strongly to defend Boss from MOG who was exposed for allegedly begging a famous groupie for sex.

Arguing that if Jesus the son of God was put into temptation then who are Christians not to be tempted?

Hebrews 2:18;

“For because He himself has suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted”

He also adds that we are all human beings and sometimes people expect too much from gospel artistes forgetting that we are all made from dust. When a Christian sins, it is seen as very much of a big deal forgetting that we should not judge others since judgement should be left to God alone.

Check out Avril as a Baby (Photo)

Contrary to popular belief, celebs aren’t hatched from husks in their fully formed awesomeness; they start out as babies, just like the rest of us. Unless they started out as child stars, you might not recognize any of the famous celebs as they look now.

With that said, look at the adorable little girl below. Any idea who it is? If you don’t, this little cute girl grew up into this;
