Kenya’s Biggest Mobile Song Contest Ultimately Unveiled; Winner Set to Record a Deal With Akon and Earn a Whopping Cash Prize of Ksh 3.4 Million
Airtel and Trace TV have partnered to provide Kenyan youth with a platform to showcase their talents in a karaoke challenge and stand a chance of a record deal with RnB heartthrob Akon.
The competition will allow participants an option to rehearse on a phone karaoke that scores the performance. Without having to stand in big long queues, all that participants have to do is Call, Sing and Win a chance to become the next big music star in Kenya and possibly across Africa and the world. This becomes the first song contest of its kind that will provide an opportunity for Kenyan youth to compete with others across Africa by simply calling in a short code number.
The partnership kicked off on 25th September with the launch of the Airtel Trace Music Star competition which will run until 4th January 2015. The competition is only open to Airtel subscribers. Numbers ported to Airtel will also be eligible for entry. The 6 best entries from Kenya will be selected by a panel of judges and will be announced on 4th January 2015. The finalists will be promoted on TRACE urban and the Web. The public will vote for their favorite entry through a short code 33733 and the winner will be announced at a National Grand Finale event on 4th January 2015; Kenyan representative will then move on to the Pan African stage to compete with other African representatives for the ultimate prize.
The grand finale will be held in March 2015. The partnership with TRACE Music Star will last three years. Other prizes up for grabs in the competition include – cash prizes and mobile phones. The overall winner will walk away with a prize of 30 000 Euros in cash (Ksh 3.4 Million at the curent exchange rates), a recording deal with Universal music, mentorship by Akon and a 5 star trip to New York City. The Dread Beat Show maestro has ruled the airwaves for a decade or so with reggae music since the inception of the show in Radio Citizen.
However, they say everything with a beginning always has an end to it. Dread Beat Show is not an exception.
On his facebook page, John Maloba aka Papa Nasty took issue with the fact that his show will be scrapped on Sunday to allow the live broadcast of a football match between AFC Leopards and Tusker Fc.
Initially it looks like the show will not be aired only on Sunday but as you read through Maloba’s post, it is clear that he is aware that the show is likely to be completely scrapped from Radio Citizen’s programme.

His fans were also quick to express their displeasure at the fact that their favourite show is not given enough attention by the head of programmes in the station. Some even threatened to switch allegiance to other radio stations that play reggae music. Such include Radio Maisha, Radio Jambo and Milele FM.

Shailja Patel Releases Statement on Smitta Smitten’s Sexual Assault Accusations. JOURNALISTS FOR JUSTICE(JFJ) Have it Here for You
The Tony Mochama (Smitta Smitten) saga is not going to die any time soon as it has continued to elicit different reactions from all quarters. It is a saga that has received extensive coverage from social media where it was first exposed to the Pulse where Smitta works.
And the Journalists For Justice (JFJ) body has added its voice on the matter first revealed by Prof. Wambui Mwangi on her twitter account.
Just as it was reported early by Ghafla Kenya, JFJ have narrated how the ordeal occurred and the steps taken by the victim of Mr. Mochama’s alleged heinous act. Ms Shailja Patel recorded a statement with Spring Valley Police Station accompanied by her lawyer Ann Njogu and others.

Smitta had early on refuted the allegations and threatened to sue Wambui for slander and defamation. However, we are waiting to here from him now that it is evident the victim has reported the matter to the police.

Sexual assault is no laughing matter. Many celebrities have had the career tank so hard that they have never been able to bounce back. Case in point, Michael Jackson, R.Kelly and locally that guy from of M.O.G.
Earlier this week Tony Mochama a.k.a Smitta Smitten was accused of sexually assaulting a poet and his career is hanging in the balance.
Binyavanga Wainaina has weighed in on the issue:

Yesterday, through an intermediary, I appealed to Tony Ontita to take the accusation of sexual assault seriously and seek remedy from Shailja, and the community he desecrated, especially if he did not remember the incident (which has been witnessed by several.)
As am given to understand, all of Sunday, Tony had an opportunity to seek redress and the conversation was kept to a closed writers group.Today. All those who have given testimony are all people whose opinions and integrity I deeply respect. I was not present. If it is as I understand it that Tony Mochama went to a fellow writers home, to attend a meeting of poets and sexually assaulted one of them, I want to make clear that such behaviour is to me worse than merely ‘criminal’. As a representative of PEN Kenya you have a responsibility to look out for the well-being of ALL writers. If the accusations are true, which I believe they are, you have violated the trust of many in our community of writers and artists. It is a trust I take very seriously. No woman, no person should ever have to deal with this kind of behaviour in any situation. It is against all I stand for as a writer.

We are in the Official Modelling Season. Tiaras and Crowns are being dished out left,right and center like USAID freebies in the Daadab Refugee Camp.
So many titles are up for grabs…Miss Tourism Kenya….Miss Kenya…Miss World Kenya…Miss County…Miss Blah Blah Blah…Miss Congeniality. Miss Confidence…Miss I-am-getting-sick-of-this-madness!
Last time I checked,Modelling was ACTUALLY an Art. An art that CAN and SHOULD ONLY be executed by people who are actually TALENTED. Not just any random pretty girl with some random Brazilian human hair and randomly-assembled makeup.
Modelling has evolved…Real much. From the glorious days when the Iconic Alek Wek would be picked from the streets of Crystal Palace in London to super stardom…From the days when Somali-born Supermodel Iman was picked from the University of Nairobi and taken to America to try modelling by talent scout Peter Beard.
Modelling has come a long,arduous road. Nowadays,Models are NO LONGER getting “discovered” in the streets…Or Schools…Or potato farms…Or dingy bars or Car parks.Like it used to be.
Models are being manufactured. Auditions s are announced….Girls show up in droves…A handful are picked and,after some 3 months-or weeks-of bootless coaching,they are launched to the World as Miss This-and-That. NONSENSE!
In the past weeks,I have had occasion to attend a handful MODELLING events….Among them,I have witnessed the crowning of Miss World Embu and the procedure to pick the Miss Tourism Nairobi Finalists at Cubano Club,Donholm.
Also,I have been following up on these shows every Wednesday Night on NTV.
And what I have seen…What I have witnessed…As far as the models are concerned,is painful. And wanting. And drab.
90% of the girls walking down that catwalk CANNOT even CAT WALK!
I saw girls wobbling down the path…With disjointed high-heels and lanky,unstable creaking legs.I watched others stumble and fall…Watched others totally massacre the classic modelling pose and smile so poorly they looked like teen genocide survivors at a UN camp.
I watched some girls teeter down the walkway…And falling…Watched others struggling to walk in their ill-fitting borrowed high-heels…Watched others offer the most moronic answers to a slew of questions asked to them. And I had mercy on them.
All of this I actually DON’T blame on the ambitious girls. But on their handlers and trainers…Some of whom are only there for the Money. Or exploiting the Girls.
Modelling has totally consumed the Kenyan Female Youth. Half of the Young Women in the room You are reading this article in right now want to be MODELS.
I see them daily…On Social Networks…On Facebook and Instagram and WhatsApp…Posting a cache of photos…striking a gazzilion poses and changing outfits like a Beyonce show in Bucharest.
I see them…In their multitudinous photos…smiling so broadly and striking so many different poses..Posting so many selfies…It looks like a Marie Claire Magazine Cover Festival.
Kenyan Girls have been totally and absolutely consumed by the seemingly-glamorous World of Modelling. They want to walk down the Catwalk…They want to change outfits and smile and pose and flip back their hair and catwalk and pose for a thousand blinding shutters of Camera flashes.
Its a Life they are dying to live. A fetish they are killing to fulfill. And it is sickening!
NOT EVERY GIRL CAN BE A MODEL! No,Not Every Girl.
Oh,so You have a pretty face??? Awwww. Oh,so You have some type of smile??? Great! And Oh,so You can afford clothes from Mr.Price?? Perfect! But No,THAT DOESN’T MAKE YOU a MODEL. It makes You an ATTRACTIVE Girl. Modelling is a TALENT. Not Smirnoff Guarana.

News just checking in confirms that indeed Superstar Kenyan Dj Creme De La Creme was arrested as soon as he landed in Juba , South Sudan last weekend.
The popular decksman who fires up the night everytime he’s on set , despite trying to keep this story undercover, finally confirmed to Ghafla that indeed he had been arrested and the reason is the funniest weve ever heard. Coz of taking a SELFIE!!
Creme upon landing decided to take a selfie with the intentions of posting it on instagram only to be whisked away and his phone taken from him.
His passport had also been confiscated. Creme via phone told Ghafla , ” I was in utter shock , as in who’s ever had a problem with taking selfies.?? For a sec i felt like i’d knock sense into that guy but the guns made me shut up loud !!! “
However, he came to learn that S.Sudan doesn’t allow people to take pics while on the airport premises. It took the intervention of some government officials . Creme was later released and went on to throw a massive 3 day party with Ugandan Superstar Chameleon.

Someone got all the nerves to boldly tell singer Nameless that he loves his wife oblivious of how the husband (Nameless) would react.
Some people are either crazy or have weird ambitions; how do you tell someone’s husband that you love his wife, as in how do you expect the husband to react? Mhh Nameless responded in a rather hilarious way; I can imagine how he read the tweet, comprehend it and finally decided to give the man a dose of his medicine. “My parents love her too. Great weekend ahead” those were the exact words that Nameless replied to the man who told him that he loved Wahu.
Personally I think the message is a bit ambiguous; you cannot really tell whether the man meant she loved Wahu as a performing artiste or romantically. Anyway Nameless’ response was quite a good one either way or what do you think?

Forget the Makueni incident where the police randomly shot at unarmed people; the police recently pulled out one surprising stunt that will leave you wonder about the two faces of the Kenyan police.
Finally a reprieve for the general public as the police has done one thing that will make their efforts appreciated; for a long time there existed a big mistrust between the Kenyan police and the greater Kenyan population. The latter and the former usually sees each other as an “enemy”; people try all the means to avoid the police while the police try all the best to catch people, cat and mouse relationship ehh!
One incident however may just work to be the bridge between the police and members of the public. The occasion was at Kibera which saw administration police officers interact with people for five-day prayers dedicated to the nation. It is not such a big deal but what is really interesting in this story is the magnitude and compassion for dancing the police depicted.
Guns aside, free interaction and just pure dancing was what characterized the event in Kibera. It is such a rare occasion to see police shaking it down with the members of the public. Check out the photos here:

Shailja Patel Reports Tony Mochama (Smitta Smitten) To The Police Over Sexual Assault
The week has been awash with allegations that Tony Mochama (Smitta Smitten) sexually assaulted a woman in one Wambui Mwangi’s house and the drama has now taken a new twist as the alleged victim recorded a statement with the police.
Shailja Patel appeared at Spring Valley police station where she recorded a statement accusing Mochama of the assault that was exclusively covered by Ghafla Kenya after writer Wambui Mwangi raised the alarm through her twitter account.

Smitta had strongly refuted the allegations and termed them as being malicious and career wrecking. He accused Wambui of slander and defamation and swore to sue her in court for a million over the same.
In response to one of our publications, Mochama said that Wambui has been a hater since time immemorial, particularly because of his ‘Men Only’ publications in the Standard Group’s Pulse. He accused her of seeing him as being chauvinistic and the allegations were tailored towards giving her feminist publicity.
In the exposure, Wambui had opted not to reveal the identity of the victim but now it is official that indeed the allegations were true and can only be confirmed in a court of law.
Ms Patel is also believed to engage the services of lawyer Anne Njogu in her case against her fellow scribe.
Shailja Patel is an internationally acclaimed Kenyan poet, playwright, theatre artist and political activist. During the alleged ordeal, the scribes were meeting at Wambui’s (another scribe) house.

Angelina Jolie Set To Work On A Kenyan Film
“I’ve felt a deep connection to Africa and its culture for much of my life” says Hollywood star Angelina Jolie about a new film she will be directing.
According to the Telegraph, the film ‘Africa’ tells a story of Richard Leaky, “a man drawn into the violent conflict with elephant poachers, who emerged with a deeper understanding of man’s footprint and a profound sense of responsibility for the world around him.”

Permithias is a 25 years old and he is representing Namibia. A professional sushi chef, Permithias unsurprisingly lists sushi as one of his favorite foods, alongside pizza. Permithias says that becoming a chef is his greatest achievement so far, because it ‘opened a window’ for himself and his family. He was inspired to enter Big Brother Hotshots because he’s been watching the show for years but won’t sell his soul or lose his self-worth in the process.

This Guy Never Ceases to Amaze me With His Grumblings; His Recent Attack On Samsung Phone Users is Way Off the Rails
This world is not enough for cyber activist Robert Alai; his imagination of the ideal world can only be achieved through visiting Disney land in a fantasy.
He is probably one of the loudest public screamers on social media in the country; oh not forgetting Boniface Mwangi the other one of cause. I have tried harder to really understand him but every time I attempt to seek answers why he is always complaining about this and that; I end up coming with more questions than answers instead. Robert Alai can only be understood as a whole; it is hard to have a diagnosis of him by just analyzing the little yet serious things he does.
Today Robert made a rather demeaning analogy of America’s iPhone and South Korea’s Samsung Galaxy; Robert is alleging that one can easily attempt to bend an aluminium referring to the iPhone while one can never attempt to bend a plastic referring to Samsung phone.I do not refute that everyone is entitled to an opinion but at the same time some opinions which are deemed as derogative will not be appreciated best in a civilized society.
Samsung users in the country are far many; Alai alleging that Samsung Galaxy is like plastic is a mock to Samsung users. We all know Samsung Galaxy is a good phone so if Alai has a problem with them he does not need to make a disparaging comment on his twitter handle. That is just my opinion too, what is your take on this?

Dennis Ole Itumbi Pens an EMOTIONAL OPEN LETTER to Wangechi the Rapper who is Still Recuperating in Hospital
In the letter, Itumbi, who is the Director of Digital Communication in the Office of the President first introduces himself to Wangechi as he believes she does not know him well because he himself heard of her first when she had the accident that has kept her in hospital for the last two weeks.
Itumbi admits that he has become a great fan of Wangechi after watching her interviews online which he says were good and straight-forward.

He then goes on to remind Wangechi that the situation she is undergoing now is not permanent and will come to pass. Itumbi inspires her with American rapper 50 Cent’s life story which he says has been full of ups and downs, but 50 Cent has managed to manouvre through to become one of the most famous rappers of all time.
As Itumbi wishes Wangechi quick recovery, he encourages her to draw inspiration from the tragedy that befell her and do great music on pain and suffering and encourage those who are suffering to be strong and fight for their courses.
Itumbi strongly believes the accident has shot Wangechi to fame as many people have come to hear about her and are interested in listening to her music. He says the accident could be her turning point and she should not worry because everything will be alright for her.
Itumbi ends the letter with excerpts of an emotional poem, full of inspiration and encouragement to not only Wangechi but even to those reading the letter.

Former guard Mbusi and street urchin Bonoko who landed lucrative jobs with Ghetto Radio before Mbusi left for a more lucrative one at Radio Jambo are likely to re-unite at Mbusi’s current station.
Mbusi and Bonoko had formed a perfect combination behind the mics with the famous ‘Hakuna mbrrrrrrrrrcha’ Mbusi mantra and Radio Jambo is looking to re-unite the two Sheng masters. Bonoko came into the limelight after his famous ‘Anakuwekelea bonoko’ phrase in an interview with journalists.

News reaching us right now is that John Muchiri of Nation Media Group is currently in the ICU at MP Shah Hospital.
Muchiri, who has gained fame an entertainment and lifestyle writer with the Daily Nation and the Sunday Nation was hospitalized after passing out. According to Fundi frank he had a blood clot in his lungs which has now been removed. He will hopefully leave the ICU tonight.
