A-Star Turns the Drinking Ordeal into Music Idea

So much has been said about the allegations that top Gospel artiste was busted taking booze recently. Well, I won’t delve into that since both parties have come out guns blazing defending their positions. So now, A-Star has decided to look beyond that and concentrate on his music career.

A-Star divulges that he derives his songs from the experiences he gets in life and that he will use the incident to write a new song. The hip-hop gospel artiste did not shy away from reliving the alcohol incidence saying that he was fully aware that somebody was taking photos and even told the Pulse photographer that he would not get any story from him since he wasn’t doing anything wrong.

For now, A-Star remains upbeat and looks forward to recording the new single. Am guessing he will be proving the paparazzi wrong in the new song. We can only wait and see how this is will play out.

Ian Mbugua Does Not Want a Ruto/Uhuru Presidency

There has been so much debate on whether William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta should vie for presidency in the upcoming general elections. So yesterday, thespian and former TPF judge Ian Mbugua took to his Facebook page to voice his concern about the two running for presidency.

“In all fairness, certain candidates tainted by the PEV in any way have no moral right to vie for the Presidency . Yes, I have said it. Bite me!” read Ian’s post. This elicited sharp reactions and counter-reactions from his fans with some even getting temperamental with the debate drifting to tribal lines. “Ian politics is not TPF get it and let it sink in ur thick skull. UHURU for president ……….” commented one fuming fan. Ian who is known for always sharing his thoughts responded by saying, “such a pity that when people can’t debate or argue their case they retort to insults. how immature! my respect to those who disagree with me and explain why. those abusing me, a ha ha:-)”

The no non-sense thespian has of late been apprehensive with the current political mood in the country which has prompted him to start posting politically-inclined messages on his page. In one of his messages, he urged voters to be sober when voting in leaders. “We need to really consider the repercussions of voting for certain individuals during the next election. 5 years is a long time to right a mistake. Do not be swayed by what they claim they will do. Look at what they have done in their constituencies, ministries, places of work, families etc. Ask yourself if they are national leaders with heart and ability to unite Kenyans or merely tribal chiefs”.

Octopizzo’s New Track His Greatest Yet! First 5 Ghafla Rating!

Octopizzo’s new track that features Anto Neosoul is finally out. And unlike what we are accustomed to from Octo, this one is a conscious track that covers the issue of politics.

Well actually, the issue of politically instigated and driven violence such as the type that rocked Kenya back in ’07. What impressed me was the harmony and instrumentals. You can just tell that Octopizzo had to dig down deep in order to do the track justice. Listening to him images of international acts such as “The Roots” and “Common” came to mind. And what about Anto? Well, i was reminded of John Legend. And do you know why?

OCTO.jpg

Well, this track is reminiscent of The Roots and John Legend collaboration in the sense that it is about being aware of the repercussions of our decisions and the impact our actions will have to the country and our children.
The video is also well done and features a little girl whom i suspect is Octo’s daughter and the whole YGB clique. The lyrical content is on point with Octo at his finest and what i believe to be his most passionate delivers puchline after punchline after punchline. Because the buck stops with our leaders, he pulls no punches calling out the president for the theft of IDP relief food and then turns round to indict the populace for killing each other with “pangas”.

ANTO1.jpg
The lyrical wordplay in this track is graceful yet imposing at the same time. Kind of like a 100kg heavily built rugby player dancing past an opposing teams pack to score a try. He calls out our greedy MPigs for doing nothing but lining their pockets in Parliament and then a cut scene glides onto the screen that shows a study on corruption’s finding which lists Kenya as the most corrupt country in East Africa. And even the ICC suspects don’t get spared. And i am happy to report that Sonko that buffoon of a “Mheshimiwa” also gets a shot taken at him and his gaudy eye-rap*ng jewellery.
This by my estimate is Octo’s finest work to date and i can only pray that he keeps growing bigger and bigger and keeps getting better and better. Anto is on key and his melodious voice which he loans to the chorus compliments not just the instrumentals but Octo’s flow.

ANTO.jpg
The only song i can think of that can be compared to this beautifully crafted hiphop track is “Wake Up Everybody” by The Roots, Common and John Legend.
Give this wonderfully crafted work of art a listen.

Radio Presenter Adelle Bravely Shares Her Rape Story To The Public

Ever since she became a celebrity, One FM radio host Adelle Onyango has always been open about the fact that she was raped when she was younger. What she hasn’t done is confess to the whole story LIVE on camera. On this day, she got a chance to clear the air on an upcoming documentary by Kaz. This is what Adelle said in a statement:

“Today I shared my rape story infront of a camera as part of Kaz’s documentary: KENYAN WOMAN.

I agreed to be part of it in an aura of excitement. The magnitude of what it entailed only hit me as I got my make up done. I was going to put my emotion to my story. Few have seen that.

The make up was beautiful (big up suzzie beauty) soon I had to go in. Luckily I knew the camera crew and Kaz from before. I wanted to potray strength from beginning to end. So I held back my tears….Until I had to recount how I had to battle to gain back my self esteem as a woman – my femininity.

Why am I sharing this? Not many people in positions of influence share the challenges they face. It’s almost wrong to be human.

I am Adelle Onyango and I am a Kenyan Woman.”

Look out for the documentary coming soon to a screen near you.

Cartel Katenga Helps Out Artiste In Need of Exposure

Cartel Katenga went to Mombasa to shoot a video for himself and Alfayo. But what they found in the coastal city is untapped talent and artistes full of promise. And so he decided to give back to the art by helping unexposed talent.

He helped out artistes without the financial muscle to get their breakthrough in the highly competitive industry. His first signing is an artiste by the name, Fat-S, who has so far released tracks like Ananipenda, Maisha and Kadem. He has also done Nimeoa with Hussein Machozi and Fisherman, and Kufa Kuzikana with Chikuzee.

Besides the recording, Katenga Ent. will also handle Fat-S’ videos to ensure he is at par, quality-wise, with other artistes in the region. Check out Chikuzee and Fat-S’ Kufa Kuzikana below.

Just-A-Band Covers Tahamaki’s Theme Song, Dunia Ina Mambo

Fans gathered at the Goethe Institut for the Just-A-Band’s listening party to sample music off their new album, Sorry For The Delay.

The band’s last album was evoked nostalgia in the form of a video for one of the album’s release, Ha-He. It was the reimagination of a previously faceless childhood hero, Makmende. In their first album, Scratch To Reveal, they covered Oh Ndio!, a classic from ’90s boy band, 5 Alive.

Looks like the band is not done with the nostalgia business. In Sorry For The Delay, they cover The Cavaliers Band’s Dunia Ina Mambo. For most, that might not ring any bells. It is also the track which was used as the theme song for the legendary ’90s TV show, Tahamaki.

Just-A-Band will perform the cover at their upcoming launch on the 27th of October at the KICC. Events starts at 6:00 p.m. Entry is Kshs. 500. Read about the other songs they played at the listening party here. As you wait for that cover at the concert or after you purchase the album, you can listen to The Cavaliers Band’s original Dunia Ina Mambo as it played on Tahamaki below.

Jua Cali Doing It Big With Esther Passaris’ Daughter

The Kenyan music scene is undergoing immense revolution with veteran artistes doing collabos with new entrants in the industry. Such is the case between genge rapper Jua Cali and 16-year old Maria Makenna Ngugi.

The two artistes are currently in studio recording the new single that is set to debut in November. In studio with  working on a massive collaboration set to debut in November, 2012. I am so honoured for this opportunity. Cheers” tweeted Makenna a few minutes ago. Makenna is the daughter to “Adopt-a-Light” CEO, Esther Passaris. Makenna who studied abroad has been singing and already has her first single out “Yeah No Definitely”, that was recorded and produced in the UK.

For now, Makenna is officially back in the country and expressed her enthusiasm saying that she is eager to immerse herself into the local music industry. She also revealed that she wants to be the first Kenyan to win a Grammy. Check out her single, “Yeah No Definitely”, below;

Just-A-Band Exclusively Share Their New Music

Just-A-Band held a listening party for their upcoming album at the Goethe Institut last weekend to a packed house. Between revealing new music, they also played DJ sets by DJ Bonyeza Kidude, DJ Ponyox, DJ Nairobi Dhobi and DJ Gummy Bear to keep the fans entertained in what was their first open local gig since the DJ Cleo concert.

The first song off Sorry For The Delay the band played was a cover of The Cavaliers Band’s Dunia Ina Mambo. In between sets they also played a funky, dance-friendly 8-bit track, Doot! Doot! They also played the song that has climbed to the top of a lot of people’s iTunes, Probably For Lovers.

The set also included Twende Kazi, which fans already know from the first album. It’s actually a reworking of that same track but it is not considered a remix and it will feature in SFD. Another track from the album played on the night was Life Of The Party.

These and more tracks will play at their upcoming launch on the 27th of October at the KICC. Events starts at 6:00 p.m. Entry is Kshs. 500.

Facebook Con Artist Busted by Police

Recently Ghafla! broke the news about con artists impersonating as celebs and other TV personalities and swindling the public of their hard-earned cash. Well, yesterday police arrested a man who opened a social media account and used it to extort money from unsuspecting Kenyans.

David Kitheka Mutua, an IT specialist from Kangundo, had set up a Facebook page with Citizen TV’s news anchor Kirigo Ng’arua details. Complete with photos and information about the news anchor, the page looked legitimate to any ordinary “Facebooker”. Further, the man even had a registered M-Pesa line with Kirigo’s name, just to ward off any suspicion.

The man would post information purporting to be Ng’arua’s just to receive money from “wellwishers”. In one message the man claimed Ng’arua’s parents were unwell and that she urgently needed money to enable her attend to them. He would then approach people who befriended Ng’arua on fake Facebook account and post a message with the mobile phone number. Of course people would then send money to the mobile number.

After days of intense tracking, Kitheka was arrested at an M-Pesa shop withdrawing his loot. Ng’arua said she learnt of the con artist after some of her friends received the messages and that’s when she reported the matter to the police station. Ironically, the guy apologized to Kirigo claiming he is just another jobless man trying to make ends meet. He said that he had recently returned from Uganda and currently had no job. According to him, he only needed 18,000/- to rent a servant quarter in Nairobi.

Be careful with who you interact with on social media.

Jamaican artiste, Lutan Fyah to shoot new video in Mombasa

Kenya is now the stop over spot when Jamaican artistes are thinking of visiting this great continent of Africa. Most of the Jamaican artistes who have so far stepped foot in Africa have not left without coming over to Kenya.

It is already established that Jah Cure will be performing in Kenya on the 1st of December. Meanwhile, another huge Jamaican reggae singer is about to shoot his video here, just around the same time.

Lutan Fyah, known for his soul soothing, romantic and melodious songs will be coming over to Kenya on the 6th of November. What song is that? You may be wondering. Well, Lutan Fyah collaborated with Swedish based Kenyan rapper, Ken Ring on a track that is set to mark a new beginning to their partnership.

The video of the song will be shot in Mombasa on that month. News of a concert have not been received yet so I’m asuming that is out of the question. No worries though. We Kenyans appreciate the fact that these great artistes acknowledge the beauty and greatness of our beautiful and majestic country.

Getting to know DJ Kalonje and his art on the decks (video)

DJ Kalonje has been and is still all over the entertainment scene. Discovering hits from tracks all over the world and turning them into goldmines.

DJ Kalonje’s mixtapes can be heard playing in bars and mostly matatus. Infact he is the biggest source of public transport music (matatus to be exact- City Hoppas are not huge fans of this at all).

He started four years ago and now he is one of the most loved and most respected deejays. No longer moving around searching for shows. Shows search for him.

Get to know all about DJ Kalonje in the video below.

Kenya’s Top 5 High Flying Artists

I have heard some people comment about how Kenyan artists are paupers but i have always begged to differ. While alot of Kenyan artists are not receiving monetary compensation commensurate with the efforts they pump into blessing us with their music, some are living it large.

And if you want proof, why not look at their lifestyles. Some artists have jet-setting lifestyles and i mean literally. These are the lads and lasses who can jump into a plane just because they missed mummy’s ugali.

BAMBOO.jpg
#5. Bamboo
Bamboo has been flying in and out of the country for the last couple of years. He recently jetted in and declared that he’ll be permanently based in Kenya… Just wondering if he’s a member of the “Mile High Club”…

3e5a35c93ee5c21ebfab34a0bc1ddced_XL.jpg
#4. K’Cous
K’Cous studies in the UK but is always around for Camp Mulla concerts. Wonder how he does it all; the juggling that is given that he has to juggle his studies, his fast paced lifestyle and all. I’m sure if he keeps his jet-setting lifestyle up he’ll discover new forms of jetlag…
Wonder whether this fact inspired Camp Mulla’s Taio Tripper when he rapped: “Shame on the pain that I feel is in your name/ yet again I’ll be floating like a KLM plane” on the track “Addicted”?

SAUTI_SOL.jpg
#3. Sauti Sol
These guys have been all around the globe representing Kenya at different concerts. They have been invited to alot of concerts and towns on account of how good the are at what they do. From Amsterdam, Texas, South Africa (to record with Spoek Mathambo). These guys aren’t particularly shy of leaving a carbon footprint.

#2. J.A.B
When it comes to flying around, these lads have only been bested by one other artist. This has been their year in terms of concerts in various exotic places. You name it and i dare say they’ve performed there. South Africa, New York (for the SummerStage Festival)

STL.jpg
#1. STL
This lass by far has moved from just ruling the airwaves to ruling the airways. She’s been flying between NYC, Amsterdam and Kenya. I wonder whether she harboured any childhood dreams of being an air hostess… or is the money she’s making burning a hole in her pocket? Who knows. All i know is that she’s successfully and her jet-setting lifestyle is proof enough of the fact.

And now here’s a wonderful angle to this article:thanks to the good folk at KLM, you have a chance to live like these celebrities. If you have a loved one whom you aren’t able to see because they live and work abroad, why not like this page: http://on.fb.me/Ol0kqE and you just might win the opportunity to spend Christmas with your loved one. And if you’re reading this from your moblie phone, log in to compete through this link http://bit.ly/SQGxL4.

Trust that Uncle Chim Tuna knows the feeling of missing loved ones who work abroad but through this competition, you stand the chance to spend Christmas with your mother, father, brother, sister, girl/boyfriend. Just like the page and stand a chance to WIN a FREE ticket.

Machachari’s MaDVD is just as real as he is on set (video)

Most of these actors that we are so fond of on our screens are nothing like what their characters would suggest (not that they should be alike). Those are just screen characters. However, some of them are quite similar to the characters that they adapt when on set, and one of them is Machachari’s MaDVD.

The kids love him, the boys in the ‘hood’ respect him, and guess what, the ladies also want some piece of that. Not because of the fame and all, well, just a little bit of that too but mostly because of his likable nature.

He has that down to earth character in real life, just like he plays on screen. Citizen TV did an E-Profile on him sometime last year and gave the fans a chance to know their favorite actor a little bit more. They go deep into his home town and reveal all.

Incase you missed this feature on MaDVD, check it out below.

Marya Reveals How She Has Been Rejected Many Times

You wouldn’t believe it at first, but the sexy songstress Marya has had her fair share of rejection at the hands of men. Marya did an interview with Sylvano Mbatu where she revealed a lot about her history, including how she got into the music industry. She told Sylvano how she had to struggle a lot in the beginning, and also about her creative process when she makes songs. Here is a transcript of how it all went down:

Sylvano: Ndio hawa mafans wako. Wanataka kufahamu Marya ni nani? Alianza vipi mziki? Kazi gani anazo?

Marya: Mziki nilijipata kwa misukosuko mingi. Kukuja Ogopa wakanikataa, nikarudi tena wakakataa, nikarudi tena wakakubali. Nikaanza na Ogopa 2007 mwisho, hapa ndio nikaanza kabisa kabisa single yangu ya kwanza “Mahaba.”

Sylvano: Ni real life experience ama?

Marya: Mahaba ilikuwa real life experience lakini ya rafiki yangu. Maanake babake alikuwa kwenye army. Kidogo akajua anarudi alikuwa kwangu kila siku amefurahi akiniambia anamngoja. Tunapiga story ananiambia ana furaha hawezi ngoja.

Sylvano: Umeweza kufanya kazi na Avril, umeweza kufanya kazi na Mustafa. Tueleze, collaborations huwa unatafuta nini kabla ufanye?

Ndio itakaa ukweli kabisa!

Sylvano: Unapokuwa hufanyi muziki, Marya huwa unafanya nini?

Marya: Utanipata kwa nyumba nasafisha nyumba, utapata napika, utapata nakaa chini naangalia movie. Hizo tu.

Sylvano: Kuna ule fan wako pale ambao anataka kujua kitu fulani hajui haswa kukuhusu wewe…

Marya: Mi ni mwoga! Yaani mimi naweza kaa hivi sehemu, ukafikiri eh, Marya amekaa? Sijui Marya ameogopa kumwongelesha? Hapo mimi mwenyewe nimekuogopa nashindwa huyu mtu ananichukulia vipi? Huyu mtu ananionaje? Ah!

Jua Cali Featured on Kenya’s Family Guy

The second episode of Ill Home is out. The Family Guy-style show is back with another banging episode and they introduce their first ever special guest star, a Kenyan celeb.

For the unitiated, Ill Home is a sitcom that centers on Baba Shiko’s household. It follows the traditional formula even including a token neighbour/family friend who always interrupts some of the family activities.

In Ill Home, that is Juma (Culture G), who you might remember as the character who was in charge of delivering the news that Baba Shiko (David Gitau) had been arrested in the first episode. If you don’t, check out that hilarious first episode here.

In this episode, Tosh (Alistair Mandela Ojiambo), quits school to pursue music and hilarity ensues as the parents try to get his son to give up on the dream. Juma enters the story as a good samaritan trying to help get Tosh back to school. In the process he introduces Jua Cali (JC) into the show. Check out the episode below to find out how it goes.

Caroline Mutoko Gets Dumped

“I need about 2 hours to recover…… she wasn’t there – I was too tongue-tied to ask where she was. There were others, grey, black, I wouldn’t even look at them —
I think I have been dumped…. While I was flirting, clearly others were making serious proposals” wrote a distraught Caroline.

That was the message on Caroline Mutoko’s Facebook page when she found out that her ‘crush’ was missing. Not so long ago, Caro was involved in an incident that prompted her to walk into the CMC Motors showroom where she got the know-how of the Range Rover Evoque. In high spirits, Caro even uploaded photos of a red Evoque (just like the one she’d seen at CMC) in anticipation that she would be its proud owner later that day.

So yesterday, Caro went back to CMC and what awaited her was “heart-rending”: her much loved red car was gone! Down in the dumps, Caro took to her Facebook page to share with her fans her encounter. Typical of them, the fans shared their thoughts with most of them empathizing with her. Caro, who did not want to show hard feelings, had this to say replying to one of her fans, “…maybe she was never meant to be mine. Let me focus on getting Nduku up we go play:-0 I’m a big girl, I’ll be fine.”

Would you go to such an extent if it were you?

Another Kenyan rapper of international standards

Kenyan rappers are going all out with good quality music and videos. Trying to match the international rapper’s standards and so far, we are almost there. Infact, some of them are even being recognised by some of the established international starts, marking the beginning of their stardom and success.

Camp Mulla stood out from the rest of the Kenyan artistes with their unique style and flow. Some time after their rise, Crew Teflon came along and stole the hype. A little bit later, The Large Gang came through with their never heard of style of music, making the rest look like wannabees.

Now, we have just discovered another star in the rising. He goes by the name of Constant, but don’t let the name define his movement. This guy is definitely moving to greater heights. His video ‘Playas Only’ is nothing like what you would expect from a Kenyan artiste (no offence to Kenyan artistes). I actually thought that this was a Western video in the beginning before I saw the rest of it. It is that good and so is the flow of the rapper. Not the usual pause-bar-pause that we are used to.

Although it wasn’t shot in Kenya, this is a Kenyan artiste and his efforts have been acknowledged. Way to go Constant.

Check out the video below.

5 Things That Went Horribly Wrong At Rocktoberfest

So, looks like this year’s edition of the long-running Rocktoberfest was nothing but fail. The only thing that prevented it from becoming a Hiroshima-style disaster is the people who decided to make their own fun in the parking lot. Even after paying to be at the event.

There were a few differences that stood out from the previous editions. This time it wasn’t put together by the usual organizer, Dan Odhiambo. It also changed the venue, something that never goes down well with diehard fans.

Below are five things we identified went wrong with Rocktoberfest, which was such a fail that Oktoberfest released a statement clarifying that they do not have any affiliation to the event.

1. The bands were told to come to soundcheck at the 3:00 p.m. on the day of the event. Most bands obliged but the technician who was supposed to do the sound for the gig didn’t show up until 6:00 p.m. just before the event was meant to start.

2. The event had to be cheap and that’s why it was moved from Carnivore to Volar. Sounds noble enough. But the cheapness came with consequences. Dove Slimme had asked about payment but the organizers said only Parking Lot Grass and Last Year’s Tragedies would be paid because they were “good.” DS backed out on grounds of unappreciation. Other bands stayed on for the love of it.

Also, the venue change kept away some fans as they only use public transport. Walking from Ngong’ Road to the inner folds of the Racecourse to Volar is not how a gothic rocker wants to show up at an event. And for the ones who did, getting through the traffic after the Airtel floodies, only arriving at 10:00 still didn’t find anything going on.

3. With PLG, LYT and the “not-good” bands in the bag, the show was ready to set off, right? Wrong. There were no drums and amps, the foundation of the rock sound. Without amps you can’t play the electric guitars or the bass. The drums were only brought at midnight, at which time most of the guys from PLG had left. “I only remember Koinange St. Avengers, I can’t remember the other one. I was pretty drunk by that time,” a fan recalled…or didn’t.

4. The Kshs. 500 wasn’t worth it. With all the problems going on inside, people mostly stayed outside making their own party in the lot. Multiple arenas were promised, for the fans, DJs and bands. Only one DJ performed. If it wasn’t worth it for the guys who paid Kshs. 500, imagine how it was for the guys who paid Kshs. 1,500 for VIP? “There was going to be a VIP area with Sheesha and whatnot so those guys who paid for that wasted their money ‘cos there was really no VIP. The Sheesha they had said would be at the VIP was at the bar,” another fan said.

5. And the most important thing, something that should have taken precedent even when everything wasn’t going right. Most people expected, or at least crossed their fingers for, metal music to be played. They were not even lucky enough to get emo played. The DJ mostly played trance, house and more EDM further ruining an evening that wasn’t going well, anyway.

Looks like people who attended Just-A-Band’s listening party had a better time. And it was free.

Pic of the Day: Robert Nagila Reporting From His Shower Room, Topless

As if his “Bree-ish” accent is not enough, the dauntless TV reporter Robert Nagila decided to pull another fast on us. The former NTV reporter (now at CCTV) was reporting from what looks like his shower room.

I just wonder the extent to which reporters would go to make their news attention-grabbing.

Kalekye Mumo Confesses That She Actually Hooked Up With Someone On A Dare

Family plays a big role in Kalekye’s life. Every other Sunday, you will find her home with her family. Born to a cateress mum and a dad who worked at Kenya Breweries, Kalekye describes her parents as strict but loving.

“Mum was the disciplinarian,” she reminisces. “She cracked the whip and we jumped on cue. She taught us to work hard and be responsible. At the age of just six, I could bake up a storm.”

However, Kalekye has always been Daddy’s girl. “He dotes on me and has never raised his voice at me. When I finally find my Prince Charming, I sure hope he is like Daddy.”

Growing up in Nairobi’s Westland’s suburbs, she had a pretty normal childhood, albeit somewhat marred by illnesses.

“When I was three, I was diagnosed with a hip condition that left me immobilised and in a cast for some years.”

She also developed psoriasis, an auto-immune condition that affects the skin. But that didn’t faze the young Kalekye.

“Growing up with three older brothers has a way of toughening up a girl. I had no opportunity to feel sorry for myself or even feel different from the other kids in school. My parents helped in that they didn’t treat me special or even draw attention to my condition, so I didn’t develop a complex about it.”

She confesses that it irks her when people get uncomfortable around her psoriasis.

“Sometimes I notice people casting side glances at my arms and don’t come right out to ask me about it. Maybe they are afraid to hurt my feelings. Well, my scars don’t bother me.”

In school, she excelled in sciences, but knew it wasn’t her forte.

“I was the artistic child, so active in the drama and music clubs at Loreto Msongari School that my parents decided that for my high school education, a rural school would do me good. They thought that if I went to a rural school, I would concentrate more on my studies.”

So they packed her off to Mbooni High, a school in the heart of Kamba land. It didn’t take her long to fit right in. Her schoolmates soon nicknamed her “Auntie” due to her ability to draw out information from others and act the agony aunt – sure signs of a sprouting radio queen.

After high school, she decided to study media and communications, but her parents didn’t like her choice.

“They didn’t think media had much to offer me in terms of stability and they wanted a paper-punching job for me. One I clearly didn’t see myself in. Routine bores me. Since I didn’t have much choice in the matter, I settled for a law degree at the United States International University.”

It was there that she rediscovered music and drama. Together with close friends, she started Charisma, a dance and music group that went on to produce musical and theatre stars such as Atemi, Nini Wacera and Natasha.

“My first ‘real job’ after school was in 2001, at Homeboyz Entertainment. I was an administrator. My salary was just Ksh 8,000. I enjoyed it for a while, but I was getting bored. I really wanted the technical side of it. After a year I joined Roughcuts Communications Company where, despite the Ksh 10, 000 pay, I was happy as I got to be trained on sound engineering.”

She supplemented her income by doing the occasional jingle for advertisements and participating in karaoke nights.

“That gave me an extra Ksh2,000 for essential items. I even cut off my hair to reduce my expenditure!”

Getting into radio was not as easy as cutting her hair.

“It took me five years of applying for a position to finally get in. And I didn’t get the typical interview. A friend told me that Capital FM was running a competition for aspiring radio presenters. My heart wasn’t really in it since I had tried so many times before, so I just wrote a quick resume and sent it, not expecting much.”

However, a month later, Kalekye got a call to report to the studio. She was expected to outdo her competitors by wooing listeners on air and the one with the most votes would win a radio training stint and later secure employment. She won.

“I cringe every time I recall my first day on air. The morning show hosts dared me to call up a certain guy I had met at a wedding the previous weekend. I don’t know why I even told them about it. Maybe it was nerves or the need to impress, but I took up the dare. Luckily it went to voicemail, but I still had to leave a message.”

The message must have impressed the guy, because he later called her and they actually dated for a while.

Four months and a disagreement with management later, Kalekye left, hopeful that she would land another radio job. As luck would have it, she got a call from Kiss 100 FM.

“I finally felt things were coming together. However, the only available slot was as a news anchor. I was eyeing a show, but I was ready to bide my time. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

Her patience paid off. She was soon offered a co-hosting slot on the popular afternoon show Rush Hour. In addition, she now hosts the Saturday Countdown show.

Kalekye co-hosts Rush Hour with Shaffie Weru, the “bad boy” of entertainment. In the show, they portray antagonists and
tackle issues that most radio shows would shy away from. Their almost palpable on-air chemistry reels in the listeners.

She says it wasn’t always that good in the studio. “When I first started working with Shaffie, we did not get along. He thought I was too serious while I thought he was immature and a joker. However, I soon realised that he took his work quite seriously and I eased up a little. That was the beginning of a great friendship. He is like a brother to me now. Even my family loves him!”

She admits that being a celebrity comes with its fair share of challenges.

“The pressure to have everything in place, the fans … it can be overwhelming, but you smile and wave and sign autographs because you realise how much love the world has for you.”

So what does happiness mean to Kalekye?

“Happiness is a feeling of contentment, worthiness and thankfulness. It makes your life complete. Am I happy? Yes. I am happy that I am alive, that I have a chance to make a difference in the world, that I have friends and family that loves me just the way I am – a plus size, sexy, beautiful woman. If you believe it, you are it.”

Stalkers are a dime a dozen in her world, but she deals with this hazard in her endearingly unflappable fashion.

“Well, so far I haven’t encountered so many. I have tried to keep a low profile but the key is to be firm while still being friendly. Loads of fans will tweet or write bad stuff on your Facebook wall. They just need to be loved. Attention is all they desire. If it irritates me, I block or delete them because I have no space for negative energy.”

On the rare occasion she encounters the difficult or rude caller, she lets common sense prevail.

“You really have to use your discretion. You learn to hang up on people who are not adding value to the show or are just plain rude. It’s done in good faith. There are just some things you can’t air or listen to.”

For Kalekye, the show must go on, no matter how bad her day gets.

“Dealing with bad news or being sick is not supposed to affect the show. When the mic goes up, no matter what is going on with you, you gotta grit, wear a smile and give a good show,” she says.

But one day, things got really bad.

“Once, 30 minutes into my show when Shaffie was on leave, I got word of my dad having had a stroke. That was the hardest it has ever been for me. I could not leave or tell my producers because I knew I’d break down. I had to sit through five hours with only text messages from my siblings, and they were not telling me much because they knew I had to work and didn’t want to derail me.”

She seems the eternal optimist, but admits that there are low days.

“Low days come naturally, but I try not to let them control me. When I have a problem, concern or worry, I need to get it all out, to talk about it. So my friends get a fair share of my worries, thoughts and concerns, but once I let it all out, whether or not the listener gives me a solution, I am sorted. Strange but true.”

Her mum, who didn’t approve of her career choice in the early days, is now her greatest fan. “I realise how proud she is
of me whenever she introduces me to her friends by my two names.”

Radio is not all Kalekye does. She has a role in the popular NTV show Mali, and has also ventured into the world of music as manager of Deejays Republic, a conglomerate of top East African deejays (Hypnotiq, Dru, Creme, Protege and Waithaka).

She has also teamed up with her best friend Genevieve to open up a hair salon.

“Black Butterfly is my baby. I love all things pretty and beautiful and what’s better than giving a woman a beautiful place to hang out in as she gets spruced up?”

Her own beautifully coiffed dreadlocks are two years old and she hopes to grow them to an amazing length.

Despite her hectic lifestyle, she knows how to relax. “I zone out by curling up on my couch and watching movies. If I want more jolt, I go out dancing with friends.” The craziest thing she has ever done was to go straight from the Saturday show to Masaku 7s to hang out – “getting up to all sorts of crazy for two whole days” -before getting back in time for her Monday breakfast show at Sam.

Where does Kalekye see herself 10 years from now? She mulls over this for a few moments.

“I will be a greater actress and, if still doing radio, a better radio presenter. Maybe I will have many more hair salons and indulge my musical passion.”

Introducing Jalang’o’s REAL Girlfriend (No, It’s Not Avril)

For the last couple of weeks there have been rumors about Jalang’o dating Avril.

Apparently, the perception that the two celebrities were dating was brought about by the fact they have coincidentally been involved in the same projects lately. “It’s true that Avril and I have been seen a lot together. It’s just that in the last two months we have worked together a lot.”

Jalang’o and Avril have worked with Coca-Cola, Nairobi Aviation, they spent a week together on a Kenya Land Alliance gig and are currently working on Guinness Football Challenge where she is an official artiste and Jalang’o is the MC. Others include an Inventors Society of Kenya gig and the IEBC Niko Rada campaign.

Not only is Jalang’o not dating Avril, he has a daughter with a long-term girlfriend. The comedian’s baby mama is a runway model and businesswoman named Cheptoek Boyo. Ms. Boyo came fourth in the 2009 Miss Kenya competition. She is a lingerie model with nairobisecrets.com and owner of fashion house, Salika.

The pair has been dating for six years and as Jalang’o says, “It’s been a long way, to the end. I have dated this chick for six years and she has seen me grow to what I am today. From when I used to live in Mwiki and we used to take the train together.”

Pulse Return Fire, Post Photos Of Top Gospel Artist Drinking!

After writing the article in which A-Star gave his version of accounts as to what happened, Pulse have responded to my dare to post pictures of A-Star drinking…

Well, not quite. They claimed in their October 19th piece to have photos of A-Star with a bottle in hand but what they have posted on facebook are photos of A-Star next to the beer bottles. And while I understand that this is beginning to read like a telenovela script, I have to give credit where it’s due.

Pulse indeed have photos but they do nothing to assuage the doubt of what they claim. Either A-Star outfoxed their photojournalist or the bottles of Barcadi Breezer were there by coincidence. We’ll never truly know nor do I Uncle Chim Tuna really care!At the end of the day, they have not delivered. I asked for photos of A-Star with a bottle in hand. That isn’t what I saw so mechi uno! Shorrup! This issue is now dead in the water.

Here are the new photos that Pulse put up on their Facebook fan page:

Pay close attention to the soft drink on the counter behind A-Star. I can just as easily claim that that drink is his given it’s proximity to him. So either the Pulse has photos of A-Star drinking and dey dulling to print them on Friday or dey jonzin’ and fronting.

You decide but at the end of the day, A-Star is merely a celebrity. We need to look to ourselves for the role models we want our children to emulate. And to celebrate as someone stumbles if indeed he did is a base human emotion. To be a human being is to surmount our baseness. Uncle Chim Tuna has spoken.

All the images have been gotten from the Pulse Facebook fanpage.

Kenyan rapper in horrible accident (photos)

E-Sir, Angela Chibalonza, Dry Gin and Frakaz, quite a long list for artistes who have lost their lives on the Kenyan roads. Last week, another artiste almost joined them but he escaped by a whisker.

Influx Swagga was hit by a swaying speeding matatu in Mwingi on Sunday afternoon as he was leaving the Mwingi Catholic Church. Good Samaritans immediately rushed him to the Mwingi District Hospital where he received treatment and was later released.

The accident almost cost Influx Swagga an arm and a leg. No, seriously! He suffered deep wounds and cuts on one arm and leg. So serious that the pictures below are guaranteed to make your face ugly right about now.
