3 Things Camp Mulla and the Black Eyed Peas Share in Common

Placed 5th on the ‘Top Hip Hop Artists’ list in Kenya on Reverbnation, behind Nonini, Diamonah, Mandech and Verse Kali, but already ahead of the likes of Chiwawa and Abbass Kubaff, there’s no denying that Camp Mulla are the current reigning hip hop group in Kenya.

Taio Tripper, Young Kass, K’Cous and Miss Karun have taken not just the country, but the region by storm with their urban hip hop musical movement and their chart domination, even making history by becoming the first Kenyan group to be featured on America’s Black Entertainment Channel (BET).

There’s a lot that Kenya’s Camp Mulla have in common with America’s Black Eyed Peas. Here’s what makes our top 5 list in the comparison

black eyed peas

1. Pure Duo Rap History

The Black Eyed Peas initially consisted of 1988 eight graders William Adams (Will.i.am) and Allan Pineda (Apl.de.ap) rapping and performing around the streets of Los Angeles, California. The pair was eventually noticed in 1994 by Ruthless Record CEO Eazy E and signed on to the label, though they never released their album, GrassRoots, because Eazy E passed on.

They teamed up with another friend of theirs, Dante Santiago, and together they were known as the ATBAN (A Tribe Beyond a Nation) Klann. They reformed and changed their names to the Black Eyed Pods but again to the Black Eyed Peas as Santiago was replaced by Jamie Gomez (Taboo)

*****

Camp Mulla also consisted of just two rappers at the onset, Young Kass and Taio Tripper who teamed up under manager Myke Tuchi to do a series of experimental projects around 2009. Their talent was clearly evident as they mostly did their gigs at gatherings and on campus.

Their music distribution was mainly on online platforms Sound Cloud and Reverbnation in addition to word of mouth and connections.

2. The Ladies Spiced things Up

Miss Kahun later on joined Camp Mulla, adding her sultry and sassy vocals. This proved to be just what the group needed as she also came in with K’Cous summing up the membership and ensuring the group could make their beautiful music.

*****

Fergie, the ‘blonde haired bombshell’ according to American newspaper Rolling Stone, joined the Black Eyed Peas in 2001. Nicole Scherzinger had been approached first though she was under contract to another band at the time. Her vocals also completed what is today THE Black Eyed Peas, pushing them to their massive success

3. Fashion and Style Defiance

The Black Eyed peas refused to conform to the ‘gangsta rap’ sounds and style that were predominant in Los Angeles at the time, instead choosing to go with their own sort of live band sound as well as an eclectic dress code, shedding off all the ‘bling bling’ and grabbing subtle accessories and ‘futuristic’ fashion senses.

They also did what few hip hop bands would go for, fusing Hip Hop and RnB to come up with pleasant sounds and unique tunes and beats.

*****

Camp Mulla call there music ’25 Flow’ which sounds like Kenya’s country code ‘254’ and is representative of their own style of Hip Hop and RnB fusion that makes their music ‘fluid’ to the ears. This is important to their producer, Marcus Kibukosya, who keeps a ‘Kenyan state of mind’.

The groups fashion sense is unique in that they look ‘gangsta’ yet fashionably sensible to the African youth at the same time.

Here’s a sneak peek into the ‘toklezea’ video

Abbas and Chantelle completed their video shoot for the song ‘toklezea’ and I have to say that it’s even better than we anticipated. Models everywhere, sandy beaches, beautiful sunset… everything is just tops in this video.

We got the video leak, at least it will give you an insight to what the video will be like and I trust you won’t be disappointed. Chantelle just looks fabulous in beach wear and I love that attitude too.

Comedian Fred Omondi performed `gold digger’ live at Hilton Hotel

The crazy Monday comedy night happened on 5th March 8, 2012 at the Hilton Hotel.  The jokes were on top from different comedians thus the crowd laughed through out the show.

Fred Omondi who was one of the comedians on stage also didn’t disappoint, but what killed the show is when he was called on stage to perform his `gold digger’ single alongside MGzee.

This brother is talented not only in comedy but also in music. The funs could not have expected this but Fred had to be the show stopper with this `gold digger’ track.

Fred is back in studio working on his new single that will feature the Prime minister Hon. Raila and his sensational comedian brother Erick Omondi.

HOLY DAVE THE HUMANITARIAN

Gospel artiste Holy Dave (real name David Muthengi) is set to launch his very own foundation, the David Muthengi Foundation, which seeks to reduce poverty and develop economic empowerment through education.

The ‘Ni Msoh’ maestro and also part time lecturer at IntraGlobal Institute plans to use his foundation as a mouthpiece  to speak out against social and political injustices. Holy Dave says the David Muthengi Foundation will include in its activities, among others, visits to schools and children’s homes, material and clothing donations as well as conducting general humanitarian and charity events.

The Foundation, which is willing to partner with like minded NGOs and Institutions, plans to set up an education fund in the long run to help educate the less fortunate children in Kenya. This is important to him because he says he grew up in a family that showed him the importance of education:

His father has a PhD in Theology, his mother has a Masters in the same field, one of his sisters boasts a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles, his brother has a Masters from the prestigious Harvard University, two other sisters with degrees in addition to the Masters in Strategic Management he himself managed from USIU.

We got the chance to catch up with him recently to shortly talk about his foundation and here’s what he had to say:

Ghafla!: Are there any specific organizations you plan to work with on your foundation? (or other Artistes)
Holy Dave: In the future I will work with any organizations and individuals who share my goal. For now I haven’t singled out any specific ones.

Ghafla!: Is there any official launch date, and what platforms/criteria will you use for your selection?
Holy Dave: I am planning on using my influence in society to raise finances and with the help of my board of trustees I will embark on the process of scouting for bright and needy young people who we will enroll and cater for their college education. So far 1 student has gone through the 6 stages of Accounting CPA thanks to the foundation.

Later on in the year once I think I am ready I will do a cocktail party to officially launch the foundation. I’ll invite various stakeholders in the Education industry, potential donors, colleagues in the music industry and also my fans to witness this worthy cause. In the meantime my new website (www.davidmuthengi.com) is complete and will go live on April 1st.

Ghafla!: What challenges are you facing with regards to setting it (the David Muthengi Foundation) up or moving forward?
Holy Dave: The biggest challenge is that there are so many bright and ambitious young people who contact me seeking to be assisted with college education but the finances at our disposal are not enough for the foundation to support them to go to pursue their dreams.

Ghafla!: Any immediate future plans with regards to your music?
Holy Dave: My next single titled “I’m a star” is finished and I am planning on releasing it in a matter of days. By now you should be aware that I like featuring new talent so that trend will continue this year.

Ghafla!: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In 5 years, God willing, I don’t want to be the biggest artiste in the country, I want to be a role model in society. I want to be an example not only in the arts but also in the social and economic sectors. On that note I see myself as an established musician, Strategy Planning Consultant and professor. I am planning on pursuing a PhD soon.

THE ILLEST TRACK FROM THE HIP HOP QUEEN

If you still doubt the Norwegian based Kenyan rapper/ singer Stella Mwangi a.k.a STL ability to rap then you better listen to this unreleased single,

`glamorous(chimmi yeah)’ where she has featured talented rapper O Double.

The song was recorded two years ago at Phoenix records by producer K.O but it’s scheduled to be released this year.

O Double was among the last five finalists in the South Africa Channel O sponsored competition Emcee Africa in 2008.

Listen to the song for the first time down here>>>>>>>  and know why STL is the African version of America’s EVE.

JAMMIN THURSDAYS: THE LAUNCH

I was quite adamant for two reasons as I headed to Westlands last Thursday evening. One. I had no idea where I was headed, as I had never been to the venue before… Two. It was my first one of a kind assignment for Ghafla, and by any standards we all fear the unknown.

Nevertheless, it all went down well…and like clockwork, as I headed to the Red and Black for Black Supremacy’s launch of ‘Jammin’ Thursdays’ last week, the 1st of March 2012. Rumour has it that the club got its name because of its location, right under Red Tape and Black Diamond…genius!

Arriving at the venue, I was pleasantly surprised to be ushered into a cavern-style corridor by a lush red carpet that dressed the granite floor upto some drawn black drapes, which I assumed was the entry to R&B (Red and Black). The bouncer and attendant were as accommodating as can be as they ushered me into the club.

The new premises has all the ingredients that make the clubbing experience memorable and comfortable: subtle yet dynamic lighting, a super DJ, first class and efficient service as well as a mature crowd just out to have fun! I spotted Simple Simon, the CEO of Supremacy Sounds across the room in the company of R&B’s proprietor.

simple and co

Supremacy MD Benson Kyendo and DJ Simple Simon

Both of the guys were down-to-earth, welcoming me and even offering to throw a round. It was 9pm, and true to their nature, Nairobi ravers don’t start the weekday party till post 10pm, so the place was still sparsely filled. I didn’t mind though, I got a vantage point near the main bar and the DJ was in full swing with dancehall anthems.

Everything here is so new, the black, white and red leather seats, the beautiful and unique wine glasses and beer mugs, the fresh faces and beautiful people. It’s an experience that surely should not end.

The waitresses who served always had smiles on their faces, even though at one point the club was almost full to capacity…not the choking full but the kind that makes you appreciate the company and the good times.

‘Welcome to the launch of Supremacy Sound’s Jammin’ Thursday at Red and Black, this and every Thursday from 8.00pm’ the MC boomed, ‘there’ll be FREE shots for all the ladies in the house at midnight!’

Sure enough he got some squeals of satisfaction and excitement from the primmly dressed ladies in attendance. There happens to be a dedicated dancefloor at the interior, laced in marble and appropriate for all those who just can’t sit down to the beautiful reggae, ragga, dancehall and riddim tunes.

jammin

The only reason I couldn’t pull an all-nighter was the fact that I had work the following day, though I checked my watch and it was 2.00am! You don’t want to miss Jammin’ Thursday, it’s happening tonight all over again, from 8.00pm at the Red and Black Restaurant. Entry is FREE so there’s really no reason you should miss out…

KBC workers angry with K24 TV for trying to sabotage their………

It looks like K24 TV aided the KBC managers with news footages and scripts to use while their workers were on strike.

The KBC staff is seeing this as a betrayal and sabotage by their K24 counterparts.

The government owned media house staff is also faulting the same media house for not even showing the ills of management and their plight for better working conditions and salary increments.

What hurts these workers is that KBC provided a news anchor position to Leah Ngare a former K24 TV weekend anchor whom to her defense sources says that she was tricked with employment and didn’t know that they were on strike.

If this allegations from KBC workers are true then this will be the biggest betrayal to the media fraternity whom are championing for press freedom, better wages (in all media stations including K24) and favourable working environment.

Brand new jam from Ringtone

He is from a humble background and currently he’s one of the top most decorated gospel artistes in the country and also added politics to his career.

Celebrated gospel singer Ringtone has dropped his latest single `usichague kazi’ (don’t choose work) which is an Ogopa Deejays Production.

The song is simply an advice to young people not to be choosy when it comes to work regardless your education credentials. I guess this is from his own experience as he did start from down and now his ripping from his hard work.

The video is of a higher quality and this shows that Sakata Media Productions is a force to recon with when it comes to video production.

GRAFFITI REDEFINING NAIROBI

It seems that Nairobi is turnng into a hub of artistic expressionism as talented groups and/or individuals take to the streets to display their talent through thought-provoking graffiti.

Recently we uploaded to you a couple of videos displaying how some whitewashed walls on Muindi Mbingu street had been extensively covered in graffiti representative of politica opinons, social awareness and lifestyle.

Read related Graffiti of Muindi Mbingu street article here >>

Well, the artwork has spread to the vendor area just next to the Gulf African Bank on Kenyatta Avenue. The latest work is a depiction of how Kenyans are fed up with the political elite stepping on their rights. Have a look at the image below…

boniface graffiti

Even Nazizi has done it Bongo

The first lady of Hip hop, just like Abbas Kubaff, has also gone Bongo and it sounds good too. The Bongo music lyrics are always entertaining, so when it is fused with the Nazizi flow, you know it’s a wrap.

Nazizi collaborated with Jaffarai who is a renowned rapper from Tanzania and well respected in the Hip hop community to drop this mad tune, ‘Tembea na mimi’. It is kind of like a club song and just a feel good song. Either way, you gotta love it.

Listen to it right here and tell us what you think about it.

TOP TRENDS: #KONY2012

Just today neighbouring Uganda had their first ever globally trending topic: #StopKony, with the country’s name also featuring in the top 10 trending list as well. This was to highlight the search for Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army guerilla group leader Joseph Kony.

Kony engaged in a violet and armed campaign to bring Uganda under theocratic government as the LRA claim that God sent spirits to communicate their mission directly to Kony to establish the Ten Commandments in the country.

The LRA has become notorious in various armed conflicts not just in Uganda, but also in Sudan, Congo and South Sudan. it is believed he has recruited over 60,000 children to fight for him as well as caused the displacement of close to 2 million people. As a result, the International Criminal Court at the Hague indicted him for war crimes, but he has evaded capture since.

Numerous international efforts have been launched to disarm the LRA, arrest Kony as well as return all the children he has taken home. See the latest efforts in the video below…

king wa rap,Collo is now singing RnB

He is famously known for his spitting capability and his also a self proclaimed king wa rap but this time round he did surprise me with his latest track,

`hodi’ featuring TPF4 finalist Amileena is different from what we are used to from him.

Rapper Collo is now singing, listen to the track here. This man can sing and you might even think that he has been attending music lessons.

Collo managed to keep up with Amileena’s strong vocals thus showing he’s got talent not only in rapping but also in singing.

This a good work from him because he has managed to do the impossible (sing) and for Amileena you have the voice.

Edi Gathegi Gets a Sibling?

We recently reported to you that Edi Gathegi had landed a slot on the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC’s) new pilot series White Van Man. Well, the station has cast actress Danielle Nicolet to also star in the series.

The series centers around co-star Kyle Bornheimer (you may know him from the other popular TV series Worst Week) who plays Jack, a man forced to put his dreams on hold in order to run the family business.

Gathegi will feature as Darren, Jack’s dodgy assistant.

American TV feature site Deadline reports that Nicolet (3rd Rock From The Sun, The Starter Wife) will play the sister of one of Jack’s co-workers. We can then safely conclude that Nicolet and Gathegi will be cast as siblings.

Mali heated drama

If you haven’t been watching the MALI series, then you don’t know what you’ve been missing. From the drama to… more drama. This is just too much. Giving ‘changing times’ stiff compe!

They call it the ‘first Kenyan soap’. It harbours some of the best actors we have in Kenya and some scenes that have always lacked in the Kenyan films. I came across this preview showing the best of the intense MALI drama. You gotta check it out.

KENYAN CO-PRODUCED FILM GRABS EURO AWARD

Ugandan David Mugisha’s feature film project ‘The Boda Boda Thieves’ won a whooping 10,000 Euro VFF Highlight Pitch Award at the 10th Edition of the Berlinale Talent Campus in late February 2012.

Participants at this Talent project had the opportunity to present their film projects in a professional setting to potential international co-producers and distributers. It seems that ‘The Boda Boda Thieves’ had what it took to grab the top prize.

‘The Boda Boda Thieves’ received funding at the 3rd Africa Producer’s Forum of the 10th Tarifa African Film Festival in Spain where the film secured a co-production deal with Kenya’s Hot Sun Films.

The film also received special mention in the International Relations ARTE prize for Excellence in Script Writing.

Last year, Mugisha’s film was just one in 5 selected to benefit from the World Cinema Fund’s allocated $283,000, garnering $81,000 of that. South Africa’s Switch Films also signed on to produce the project.

The film’s synopsis reads:

When Goodman gets a job for his son Abel as driver of a motorbike taxi or “Boda-Boda”, he feels like things are possibly finally going his way, that is, until a gang of thieves robs Abel of his treasured motorbike. We follow Goodman and his son Abel on their quest through the city to find their “Boda Boda” and in the process gain an insider’s view of urban Africa, its underworld and the generation gap between urban migrants and their first generation children.

‘Tumechoka’, hip hop’s cry

From Audio Kusini comes this unique blend of artistes from Mombasa, Nairobi and one from New York who together hold up the ‘OKOA HIPHOP PROJECT’. An attempt to save Hiphop music is well received with Hiphop fans seeing as everyone is turning to techno/electric and house music.

These guys have released a track titled ‘tumechoka’ with features all the artistes in this project namely Kidis, Silver, Ekori, Skobo, Gas Fyatu, Doo Mambo, KeviExicon(Ney York) and Kaktus. With conscious lyrics, they deliver their message in rhythm and flow. They even have a Maasai rapper that raps in his native language and still manages to deliver perfectly.

The video of the track also speaks if you are keen on the surroundings/environment. Nas was dead wrong when he said Hiphop is dead, or if it was, it just came back to life. Check this out.

Wyre speaks out about everything

I’ve always crowned him ‘King of The Dancehall’… that’s because he is. Come to think of it, I think a collaboration with Redsan would be amazing. Anyway, ‘Cheche za Burudani’ recently did a cover on Wyre and his music and the tactics he uses to stay in touch with his massive number of fans.

With his versatility in music, Wyre has done songs in almost all genres of music including reggae, benga, kapuka, Afro soul among others. Do I need to give more reasons as to why Wyre is the King in what he does best?

One thing is for sure, despite him being on top and all… he’s just began. Watch this space.

Check him out on ‘cheche za burudani’ right here.

Rabbit’s best single ‘Yesterdays’ video released… check it out

The video for rabbit’s latest single ‘yesterdays’ was just released yesterday and it is already the most liked video on YouTube. This is the deepest and most personal song I’ve ever heard from Kaka Sungura. Very emotional and strong lyrics.

The beats to this song have that ‘oldschool hip hop’ feel to it, kinda like what we all loved about Jay Z and Kanye West way back. This might just end up being at the top of my playlist.

Rabbit talks about his life in a nutshell. He takes us through his school days, his love life and gives us a little about his friends. The video is red hot and adopts a movie theme, shot through CBD.

The song comes off the album ‘ORUTU YA MASUDI’ and is destined to be a HUGE hit. Check it out.

Busted Batterer

This issue needs to be addressed ASAP. Domestic battering is destroying our reputation, we are now getting more famous across East Africa for all the wrong reason.

Well, this time it’s the other way around (man hitting wife), but it doesn’t make it better.

Two days ago, Ciku Muiruri busted a batterer through his wife’s call and this is what he had to say…

we have lost one of the best singer we……

The gospel fraternity has lost one of the most talented singer, vocalist and a dancer through a road accident this past weekend.

She was a member of the award winning gospel group, Maximum Melodies popularly known as Foi but her real name was Winniefred Wambui Kinuthia.

Foi’s funeral arrangements meetings are going on at Embassy cinema from 6.30pm till 8pm. She will be buried on Friday 9th March.

Our heartfelt condolence goes to her family, Maximum Melodies group and the gospel fraternity as whole. Let’s join hands and give her a decent send off.

May God rest her soul in eternal peace.

Presenter Tina Kagia quits classic 105

This a big blow for classic 105 as word has it that presenter Tina Kagia

who host the mid morning show has hand-in her resignation letter.

Word has it that she might be headed to One FM but she’s downplaying this as she has not been released by her yet to be former employer.

She has been working for Classic 105 for the past two years.

Tina Kagia is yet to comment but keep it Ghafla for more on this.

If you are a musician, rapper, dancer…………this the place to be

The March edition of Artiste Breakfast will be held this Saturday at

This is a monthly forum that takes place every second Saturday of the Month.

It’s aim is seeking to raise the bar of excellence in the music industry and produce effective artistes who can stand the test of time.

This the perfect event for Rappers, singers, instrumentalists, dancers, deejays, producers and also event organizers.

DJ Joe Mfalme’s lecture

The true definition of a good DJ according to DJ Joe Mfalme is

the one who has top notch skills, good record selector, good character, passionate about his work and a good entertainer.

He advices the up coming talent that deejaying entails passion, the love of the game, sacrifice and dedication and if they don’t have any of the above then they should not think of joining this lovely career.

DJ Joe Mfalme acknowledged that without discipline no one can survive in this industry as much as one has got mad talent. He said that he has already seen great DJs going down because of behavior issues.

The king, himself advices young up-coming DJs to emulate and learn from the gurus (DJs who have been in the game for the last 10 years).

He accepts that knowing how to scratch will give someone an added advantage but that does not make you the best as your character matters a lot.

Deejaying is a profession and people like him are earning a living out of it.

He’s parting shot was that respect is earned by respecting others.

Alisha Popat’s concert

Remember this beautiful Indian lady in Colonel Mustafa’s ‘Mena Pyaar Kiya’ which was an instant hit. She has a beautiful voice, that’s a fact.

So, there should be no reason for you not to attend her upcoming concert.

Come and hear this Indian flavoured voice (just like in the Bollywood movies), except, this is live at Tamambo Village Market on the 17Th of March from 8:30PM.

Entry is just Sh.200. Come all.

‘Woman’ at the MJ Centre

The 8th of March is International Women’s Day, and as a pre-celebration, The Michael Joseph Centre will be playing host to a concert branded ‘Woman’. This unique event will feature 16 key women in the Kenyan entertainment industry.

The leading ladies on stage include June Gachui, Ngwatilo, Sentimental Floetry, Christine Kamau, Liz Njoroge, Ma3 The Band, Sara Mitaru, Dorothy Ghettuba, Kathy Kiragu, Sage, Murfy’s fLaw, Essy of Aziza Band, Nicole Maloba, Kasiva, Viola Karuri and Amare Poeta. With acts ranging from free verse to ne-soul and rock, the night is bound to provide a potpourri of celebration that won’t be strictly feminine.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Connecting Girls: Inspiring Futures.’ As part of this central idea, all proceeds from the concert will go towards Huru’s Reusable Sanitary Pad Project.

The project was launched in January 2008 in partnership with America Share, the non-profit arm of Micato Safaris. It is devoted to assisting Kenyans girls in School. Research revealed that girls in Nairobi slums often scavenge for used and discarded pads or use old cloths, toilet paper, bits of mattresses, or sheets of newspaper as makeshift pads.

To resolve this, Huru designed a Reusable Sanitary Napkin (RSN) program that is currently being launched in Kenya.

The date is the 7th of March 2012 from 7.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. as you connect with these talented artistes, contribute for a crucial cause, and usher in ‘Woman’. Entry is only 500/= and can be purchased at the Michael Joseph Centre reception desk. There’s plenty of safe parking, as well as direct access to public transport.

Alfayo goes ‘bazuka’ on Nyerification

Hehehe… this Nyeri saga is now going too far. Look on the bright side though, at least it’s sparking creativity in the artistes and comedians. Guys are coming up with all sorts of really funny clips and jokes. Especially on the social media.

It’s crazy out there and at the same time, it’s a pity for the Nyeri guys.

Anyway, another song aimed at the Nyeri crisis is out. This time, a lesson comes with the humor. The Katenga family, Alfayo and Cartel, did a song that has a rather very interesting video, ‘Fadhe goyo Madhe’. It actually shows us live action.
