Margaret Kenyatta’s 2015 edition of the First Lady’s Half Marathon has so far received a sponsorship boost of over Kshs 160 million that will go towards the Beyond Zero Campaign, event organizers can today reveal.
Yesterday, various organizations and entities presented their cheques to the First Lady’s Office at State House with Bank Of Africa presenting a cheque of Kshs 12 million that has gone towards buying a fully-kitted mobile clinic.
Among other entities who have presented their cheques include Roy Kiruri, a 16 year-old Kenya Swimmer based in South Africa who collected Kshs 500,000 through an individual initiative that saw him fundraise for every kilometer he swam at the recently concluded 1600 metreMidmar Mile open-water event in South Africa.
The marathon, which is in its second year and scheduled for the 8th of March at Nyayo Stadium, aims at collecting Kshs 600 million which will go towards buying 27 fully-kitted mobile clinics to be distributed to the 27 counties that are yet to benefit from the proceeds of the first marathon.
This year’s marathon targets to bring together over 40,000 participants and will feature a wheelchair race for the physically disabled as a new component of the marathon. So far, over 3,000 individual participants have already registered for the various races with over 100 corporate teams being key components of the registrations.
The winner of the 21 km race for both men and women will take home Kshs 750,000 as prize money, with the runners up taking home Kshs 500,000 and third-placed athlete taking home Kshs 250,000.
The winner of the 10 km race for both men and women will take home Kshs 250,000 as prize money, with the runners up taking home Kshs 100,000 and third-placed athlete taking home Kshs 50,000.
First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and her training team were yesterday joined by female media personalities for a morning training session at State House before proceeding for high-altitude training in Iten next week.
Preparations for the Marathon are in earnest with registration ongoing at Nakumatt,
Uchumi, Nairobi Sports House and Equity Bank Branches country wide at Ksh 1,500 for individual participants and Kshs 100,000 for corporate participants of between five and ten individuals.

The 2014 First Lady Half Marathon helped raise Kshs 200 million shillings that have gone into buying, and equipping, mobile clinics for all the 47 counties across the country. So far, the First Lady has been delivering the mobile clinics to Counties based on the intensity of HIV/AIDs, maternal mortality and child mortality burden.
As of the 11th of February 2015, a total of 19 mobile clinics have been distributed to the respective counties out of the 20 that were acquired following proceeds from last year’s marathon.
Statistics indicate that 108,000 children die in Kenya every year before their fifth birthday, with 65 per cent of them dying before their first birthday. It’s also estimated that there are 72,000 infant deaths in Kenya annually, while 48,000 deaths occur during the first 28 days of life annually.
